UPenn c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for responding! I would much rather know than not 😀 Best of luck to you!! If you wouldn't mind, let me know how it goes (via PM or whatever you prefer)!! I think it would be nice to get an interview from my IS at least, but I wasn't 100% keen on going with UPenn yet. 👍:xf::luck: I'll be thinking of you that Friday! As well as everyone else that has an interview that day!!! Happy thoughts to all!!!

Thanks! I will let you know how it goes 🙂

Large animal day is for people interested in equine and/or food animal, specifically.

Also, some advice: Be prepared to recognize the fact that Penn does not have any sort of strength in aquatic animal med. That is, don't say that you want to go to Penn because you specifically want to be an aquatic animal vet. Opportunities to really get involved in these areas lie outside of Penn's curriculum (ie. Aquavet seminars, special species club, etc).

Thanks for the advice. Fortunately I have known all about the difficulties of getting into aquatics for a while now, especially the fact that almost no vet school has "inside" opportunities to get a head start in this field. The advice I have been given from the aquatic animal vet that I know (and the non-aquatic animal vets I know) is to get a great education at any vet school, and start worrying about additional training/experience after school is over (and probably after a few years working with SA/LA). Besides, you never know what field you will end up in, and UPenn is an excellent school to start this exploration.

So a family friend (who happens to be male and in Penn Med right now) at a holiday party got all excited when hearing I was applying to Penn. "you could be part of the Penn 15 class!!"

Me: 😕 :eyeroll: and then maybe the inner 8 year old got a little

I don't get it. 😕

Haha Penn 15 does take me back to my youth--at least it's better than asking if you've been accepted yet!

Remember to check the Interview Feedback page (look on the bar at the top of the page).

You can read reviews of other peoples' experience at the school of your choice, and everyone who interviews this year will I hope post a review, too.

Good luck and success to everybody!

You know, the Pen15 club...

I had to look it up on urban dictionary, lol. Apparently I missed out on that lovely piece of american pop culture. (Possibly because I was living in another country but most likely because I was home schooled 🙄)

oya good point Angelus-definitely look up interview feedback for Penn. They ask a lot of the same "hard" questions. (Although honestly i dont think any are really hard, but i know some people think ethics is scary). Most people think penn interviews aren't stressful though, more like a conversation.

I forgot who, but there is one guy who interviews and likes to ask this 1 Q that is pretty scary and random (what is your favorite system in the body...and why/summarize it). But besides that, all the normal things.

For the euthanasia Q....they probably won't let you stop answering until you eventually say u'd euthanize...they usually add onto the problem "what if the owner says ____" "what if the dog would be tortured or left on the street" "what if it is impossible that no one takes the dog and you can't afford to keep it". I didn't get asked an ethics Q but my idea on how to stay out of a debate is to say "I would do this then this then this, if it is not possible i would do this and this...and ALL that is not possible I would euthanize" That way, they can't really say any follow up or argue with you because you listed every option and even dared to say u'd euthanize (which i think is mostly what they want you to know...that you WILL have to euthanize an animal sometime in your life)

I ended that line of questioning pretty quickly with, "there are clearly a number of ways to approach this issue, and there is no one correct answer in all situations". Thankfully, we moved on to something else with no further discussion.

👍 Nice response! I will definitely frequent the interview feedback stuff. Thanks for the advice all!! 😀

Sweeeet 👍

Ah my interview is in less than three days!!!! I made the mistake of checking the weather and now I am freaked about the snow and my flight down and back that same day. :scared:

On the plus side, a delayed or cancelled flight means I can go to happy hour! 😀

oh wow i didnt know it was going to snow lol so looks like it just says few snow showers, 30% chace at day and 60% chance at night...that would be kind of cool if your flight was delayed at night haha

Don't worry, quantized and nyanko got a lot of blank stares in trying to spread the gospel of the cervical raphe as being the neck taint. The level of humor in our anatomy study sessions was pretty low.

What, you aren't driving the convertible with the wind in your ears down to Philly?!? I'm so dissappointed. 🙁 (in other words - I love your avatar! It cracks me up every time). Seriously, though, good luck Friday!!! :luck:

AHHHgood luck to everyone interviewing this week/in the upcoming weeks!!
still crossing my fingers... it's already wednesday ahhhhh please please please

So excited-just got an interview invite for Fri. Feb 4th. However, I already have an interview that week so I'd have to miss pretty much the whole week of classes. I'm pretty worried about now. :scared:

I can't believe it, I got an interview. My first, and probably only so :xf:.

woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!! :soexcited:

i am so excited to meet everyone!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm super super excited for the first group this friday lol

so does anyone know what they want a photo for? also...is anyone else having a really hard time finding an acceptable one??? how lame would i be if i brought one of me with an animal...

ADDITIONALLY. would it be weird to have one with someone else in the photo? i don't really have many photos of just me... cropping is also an option, but always looks strange.

 Thank you! And congratulations to everyone who just got an interview! This is such an exciting time in our lives. :luck::xf: To everyone!

And catscatscats - I took a crappy semi-close up of my shoulders to my head the other day, but I am not happy with it so I think I will keep trying until I get the smile right. See you Friday (sorta kinda lol) and good luck!

haha, at the time I interviewed there last year the most recent picture of me was one of me with my dog, AND I was wearing a Phillie's shirt. 😳 I thought that one was a little too blatant so I went with a picture that was much older. I'm pretty sure it's just to help everyone (interviewers, current penn students that help with the process, etc) put a face to a name after you walk out of there, so they can remember you better. So as long as it looks like you and isn't inappropriate in any way, I wouldn't worry too much about it! There were even some people the day I interviewed who forgot their pictures, so they ended up just making a photocopy of their licenses.

so does anyone know what they want a photo for?

I'm guessing it's so they can put faces with names when it comes to decision-making time. I have another school that asked for one, too. I'm planning on having my husband just take one when I look nice one of these days... I don't keep headshots of myself just lying around😉

It is so they can make sure everyone knows who is being discussed. The students that do your tours have input but may not know you by name.

I had an animal in my picture and got accepted😛

i just took brought a close up pic of myself, kind of like a passport pic. i couldnt find any other ones that seemed appropriate and had a realistic view of me haha

i think an animal in there is fine, but i wouldnt bring a pic with another person in in the picture...dont want them to get confused! lol Cropping does look strange, another reason why i just took a new pic

Just wanted to say good luck to all interviewing tomorrow!:luck::luck::luck:

YAYAYAYAYAY I'm so excited for those of you interviewing tomorrow!

Relax and enjoy it!

I'll probably be wearing my blue ski hat around (it's cold in lecture!), its light blue with white on it and a blue pompom on top...feel free to stop me and introduce yourself!

and don't forget to come to happy hour!

Good luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow! 🙂

good luck guys, come see us in anatomy lab 😀

good luck guys, come see us in anatomy lab 😀

does that mean ur going to anatomy lab and not happy hr?!?!? come meet the prevets during happy hr!! bring choco!!

I meant that I hoped the tour would come to our anatomy lab. But actually yes that is true I will be in anatomy lab during happy hour. So if any of you crazy kids want to come up you will see how I spend my Friday nights.

Congrats to everyone who finished interviewing today!! I LOVED meeting everyone and I had such a great time at happy hour. We had about 12 prevets come...amazing!! I think this will be a good semester of happy hours. I hope everyone enjoyed meeting the students and all the doggies 🙂

Secondly, I heard that we have twice as many people trying to change their interview date and there may be some people taking advantage of how nice I said the administration is ..?!?!
😡 :boom:

I'd like to repeat...yes, Penn is nice and accommodating with changing dates, but this is ONLY for good reasons. ie. your IS school is interviewing you the same day and is unwilling to change. Do not take advantage of this!! vacations are a ridiculous reason to reschedule!

Lastly, nice meeting everyone today! Mike, I'm calling you out! If anyone here is lurking...please PM me instead of just coming and knowing everything about me when I know nothing about you! it is a little strange. Thanks to everyone who has written me, even if you never posted before, it is nice to know your name and know that you read SDN and want to chat.

Wow. That is so low.

Do not take advantage of this!! vacations are a ridiculous reason to reschedule!

Ha. I say let 'em try to reschedule "because I'm going on vacation that week." That will certainly let the Ad Coms know who not to choose for the class of 2015. Easy way to thin the herd. :meanie:

Glad you had fun with this group, though! Hope everybody gets in!

Good luck to everyone who has already interviewed/is interviewing! Does this mean that the rest of us that haven't heard anything are most likely to be rejected? or does this mean lots more waiting... 😵

I hope everyone had a great day today!👍👍👍
I was just wondering, approximately how many pre-vets interviewed?

If you haven't heard yet that in no way means you're rejected or likely to be! This was our first group of interviews and they go every Friday until march sometime so try to relax and be patient.

I also enjoyed meeting everyone today! Our class was so pumped up and excited that interviews had begun! We were all grinning and probably scaring everyone off. 😛

But yeah, quit it with the rescheduling. The adcoms/admins dont seem too pleased.

Thanks GellaBella! I needed to know whether it was silly to still have my fingers crossed!

:clap: For everyone who interviewed today! Hope it went well for all!

Speaking of wanting to avoid changing interview dates, does anyone know when the LA/New Bolton interview day will be this year? I have the chance to buy really cheap plane tickets right now for an accepted students weekend, but I don't want to risk taking up a weekend that MIGHT get an actual interview (Penn is the last school I have to hear from). Last year, it looked like the last interview day was 2/12? But I also have heard people mention interviews going into March? Any clues for this year? I suppose this is something I could call and ask on Monday but cheap cross country tickets don't always last that long!

Thank you! It was SO FUN and I looooved meeting all you vet students! I thought my interview went really well, very relaxed and conversational. I only got asked three questions: Tell me about yourself, where do you see yourself in 10 years, and tell me about some interesting cases you have seen at your clinic. Oh and of course, do you have any questions for us. Very easy to answer and the interviewers talked as much as I did! I didn't get a phone call last night though, so who knows. But overall, a very good day! Note to anyone with upcoming interviews: EAT A HUGE BREAKFAST and DO NOT TRAVEL ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR INTERVIEW because it is a huge stress and I was 45 minutes away from being late for the interview because of crazy airport delays! Oh, and go to happy hour!!!!

As for the lurkers, I met some of you as well today, and you should totally join!

I hope everyone had a great day today!👍👍👍
I was just wondering, approximately how many pre-vets interviewed?

Thanks I did! Exactly thirty students interviewed today, and feel free to PM me if you have more questions about how it was structured 🙂

:clap: For everyone who interviewed today! Hope it went well for all!

I am not sure when the New Bolton day is, but yesterday a member of the adcom told us they were interviewing every single Friday through February, with a possible interview date the first Friday in March, if that helps!

So glad to hear you had a great day Shadow23, and thanks for all of the details! I can't believe there were 30 pre-vets! How did they fit all of the interviews in? I guess they had different interviewers?
I have an interview on 2/4 and am so nervous already. Everything is riding on this one day for me, so :xf::xf::xf:.
Good luck to everyone intervewing, and for those still waiting (and don't worry, there's still alot of time left 🙂).

There are multiple interviewers. 30 prevets is actually a really low number. For some schools like vmrcvm or IL, that do interviews over one weekend, there are hundreds of people there at once.

lol i know, so true. The thing is, i don't think anyone actually said "vacation" but the adcoms are now suspicious of why more people are changing dates than normal. Which means it is either a huge coincidence that more people have interview comflicts this year, or people are taking advantage of it for other silly reasons. So basically...i guess it just looks bad for everyone who tries to change now 🙁 There is really no way of knowing who actually needs help with a conflict or who is taking advantage. Or maybe this really IS just a coincidence! (i hope)
