UPenn screwed up

Disclaimer: I only find this funny because I have already been accepted to a medical school I would be happy to attend.

My pre-med advisor called me today to tell me that I was one of maybe a dozen people from my school (JHU) to have received an interview invitation from UPenn via email. Mine happened to be sent November 15. However, neither I nor anyone else actually received this email and UPenn has no record of them bouncing back. When no one from our school had gotten interviews at UPenn, my advisor investigating and the error was found, but because all the admissions decisions have already been made, the best she could negotiate for us was an interview for a waitlist spot.

Damn, and I thought it would end with AMCAS.

I can't believe that! Some people must really be mad.
I had a similar siguation with duke- it took repeated calls to the office for them to finally realize that I was supposed to be interviewed and had never gotten the email.

this is true... my girlfriend and I (jhu ugrads)went in yesterday to tell our premed advisor we had decided for sure on Pritzker. She was really happy but said "would your decision be altered if you both got penn interviews, because you did, they just messed up." We said that it wouldn't matter, and spent the rest of the time talking about pritzker mostly. Yeah, apparantly they invited like 10 jhu ugrads for an interview and the email never went through, you'd think they would have contacted out premed office if it happened multiple times that they got no response from jhu people. But they are only now figuring it out. Another friend of mine was in this batch and got an email today saying they were setting up an additional interview day for us if we want it. However it is only an interview for the waitlist since the class is already full. Yup, pretty messed up situation, anyways, it's upenn's loss 😛

Go anyway. Because of the mistake, you may end up at the very top of the waitlist. Or some other consideration over regular waitlistees. I wouldn't pass it up regardless.

I know at least two people from the JHU Class of 2001 who interviewed at UPenn... I'm sure of it because I saw them at a Saturday interview session on November 10. Are you sure no one at all from JHU got invitations to Penn, or just that 10 people who all happened to be from JHU didn't get the emails?

That is so interesting. I graduated from Hopins in 2001 and got an email from Mrs. Krause asking if I had gotten a UPENN interview.

Yeah, Mrs. Savage actually drove up to Penn to yell at them. I have to admit, this was the first time I was actually really pleased with the pre-med office defending us. 🙂 Although, I don't think it even matters at this point... :-/

I also received an e-mail from Savage asking if I had been offered an interview. My boyfriend is at law school there and his mom is an alum of the med school. They were both pulling heavily for me in the office, but I have average stats and didn't expect much.

I just want to say that this is really messed up and VERY unfair. I can imagine many jhu grads would want to go to Penn because it's closeby (not to mention the other reasons). You guys worked really hard for your excellent education at a top school and this seems completely unfair. Penn should open up ten more spots IMHO!

I must agree with Doctora Foxy's sentiments--that is SUCH BS--it makes you further realized how absolutely flawed this whole system is. Makes me wonder if the schools I didn't get interview requests from actually messed up to. . .or maybe a couple :wink:

Definitely makes you wonder what other schools may have screwed up and cost you an opportunity to attend a place that was potentially pretty high on your list...
I agree with the Foxy mama, with all the money we spend on secondaries they should really be more careful and use a little more consideration in this process...if you extend an invitation to an applicant I don't know many that wouldn't respond, thus a non-response (especially 10 from the same undergrad) should trigger a red flag

Yah this certainly is unfair for JHU undergrads but I don't think the amount that they paid for their educations has anything to do with it (I don't think it would any less unfair if 10 applicants from University of Houston had the same problem). Penn should interview them fairly for positions in the class. If 10 were interviewed, chances are they would select 3 or 4 tops out of those. I'm sure they could afford 3 or 4 more positions.

Sorry...that bites.

After dealing with a ton of really bad screw ups on my AMCAS application, I found out two weeks before numerous schools started interviewing that due to their incompetence my application was incomplete.
Harvard, Duke, and USC were just 3 of the schools that I know about who lost half of my f*cking application.....and because of it I didn't get an interview.

Rather than be upset about it I've just taken the attitude that I wasn't meant to be at any of those places, and God was just watching my back or something. I think that everything ...including screw ups...happen for a reason.

If I chose to pay for a top private school rather than going to a good state school to help me out in the future and this happened I don't think I could contain my anger 😡

hey choker, nope we didn't apply to nyu, so it wasn't us.

to everyone else,
many hopkins ugrads did successfuly get penn interviews, I was talking with one of those people today, and his hypothesis is that people who used jhu.edu email addressed didn't get the email, he used a different one and all the people i know that didn't hear used jhu.edu addresses. Do you guys remember back in like august there was that spamming session that started with UPenn not concealing everyone's email addresses in a mass email? anyways, maybe hopkins' server blocked email from that 'spamming' address. It sounds like a pretty feasible explanation to me. Ms Savage told me a while ago that over half of those she thought would get upenn interviews didn't, so I'm guessing at least 10-15 did, and 10 more of us got in this mess.

I'm a '01 alum and I still use my <jhu.edu> domain. While I think that there may have been some connection with using the domain if you're a current student, it wouldn't affect alumni because you need to forward your <jhu.edu> domain after December of your graduating year.

I have yet to contact Savage about the Penn screw-up, I doubt I would have been offered an interview anyway 🙂

(Sidenote, for those of you graduating in May, you can keep your JHU alias until December of 2002 and forward the address to your med school account. After December, you'll need to pay dues to keep your alias and still use the <jhu.edu> domain. You'll have access to <jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu> until September.)
