Hi All,

I made a mistake of uploading a LOR directly to a med school's online portal after my interview. After the upload, I learned that the school only accepts LOR via AMCAS. I already met the school's LOR requirement with my committee letter through AMCAS long ago, so this LOR was only meant as an update. Now that I have potentially violated some rules am I completely screwed with the school or even med schools in general? Should I contact the school about this? There's no way I can delete the upload at this point.

Thanks in advance!

Doesn't look good.

Best case: they ignore it.

Worst case: they see you can't follow simple directions.

Nothing can be done now, so move on because you trying to fix it via email may draw attention to your inability to follow the school's directions...

but wait, did you have the letter yourself? I thought letters had to be private for schools to seriously consider them?

Yes, the professor sent me the letter himself as a "support letter" regarding my academic performance in his class in the fall. It was on a letterhead with signature and everything though. Because of this, I didn't consider this as a "formal" recommendation letter but simply as an update. It was a lapse of judgement on my part to upload this onto the portal without any second thought.

Why don't you call the office tomorrow, explain this, and then ask if they can remove the update because you "discovered that this is not the appropriate method for providing this update." You could even say that you have seen the letter so you did not feel it was appropriate to send it via AMCAS as it would be misleading since you waived your rights on AMCAS. Just be polite, they really won't care that much

I disagree with this point. Waiving the right to view letters does not mean you can't or didn't read them. OP waived his/her right, and the letter-writer gave the letter to him/her anyway. The letter can be uploaded to AMCAS. Nothing misleading about it.

Oh I see, I was always under the impression that waiving the right to see our letters meant that we were confirming that we had not seen them. My PI asked if I wanted to look over the letter they wrote for me and I said no because I had waived my rights lol

I called the Admissions office this morning. They asked me for my AMCAS ID then told me that I would be contacted by the committee if there's any questions. They said the letter would not be deleted from the portal. I think my only option now is to upload an explanation onto the portal to discuss the situation (I think going through AMCAS to upload an already compromised letter can probably aggravate the situation). For anyone involved in admissions (@gonnif @Goro ): What can I do to remediate this?

If they said the committee will be in touch with any questions, then wait until the committee gets in touch with any questions. Stop aggravating the situation

A know a few schools who say you can upload or email support letters to them directly, you’re over thinking this. It’s not a required letter, it’s essentially an update. Dont worry, let it ride.

Quit fussing over it, because what's done is done.

Thank you everyone for your input. I decided to upload a short explanation in case if the med school might want to contact AMCAS. What's done is done and I just need to focus on the rest of my cycle. I apologize for my neuroticism and I appreciate everyone's help!
