UPMC is making all its' physicians hospital employees.Is this widespread across the country.UPMC has bought many of the smaller hospitals within 100 miles of PITTSBURG and dominates western PA.

Yup Cleveland clinic has done the same as well. Bought most community hospitals in the region.

I’ve seen this with some of the larger private hospital networks. Notice however that it’s not only Pathology they’re doing this too.

UPMC should have been broken up years ago. Unfortunately regulators never have the tools or the will to act.

When they need to fill a spot in one of the community hospitals, how does UPMC advertise?
Something like:
Come to Western Pennsylvania and enjoy all of the pay of academia, with none of the perks.

Sadly, that advertisement would still probably work with plenty of pathologists applying.
Does UPMC offer free parking at their facilities?

This is happening everywhere...not just pathology, other sub-specialties are trending toward employment by large medical group.

I don’t think this is so awful, so long as you have a good employer. I haven’t heard anything bad about working in the UPMC group.

all of CT is consolidating into two large groups. Similar situation in MA. In my geographic area I have seen lab consolidation (from hospital merging into a system of hospitals) lead to multiple pathologists losing their job. I dont blame the administrators decision either - there were no resultant patient care issues and the health care delivery became more efficient and cost effective.

this is why a massive surge in retirement — if this even will happen — will not be that impactful on the job market. The field is in the midst of massive consolidation with larger central labs with increasing efficiencies.

Consolidation in health care is one of the biggest reasons for increased cost.

I paid $115/month for parking at UPMC Presby during my fellowship. I imagine it's even higher now.
