I am a Canadian citizen and have been studying in the US since I was in HS. I went to a community college for 3 years and did most of my pre-reqs there. Did the general bio, chem, ochem, & calc series. Due to me being immature and not a serious student. I ended up with a 2.8 GPA (with many C's D's and W's and a few A's and B's). After that I re-evaluated myself and my goals for the future. After some long thinking and self discovery I am now away from all the distractions and have understood what I needed to do to pull myself together and get better grades. I am a junior now and am attending a CSU. I decided to retake my Calc series all over again, took one semester of Bio w/ lab, re-took the last semester of Ochem w/lab, & physics w/lab. Now I am doing very well in all my classes and got a 3.7 GPA my first semester at the CSU. I hope to keep getting good grades and to bring up my GPA. I also plan on taking the DAT by this summer and I am thinking about applying my senior year to Dental school, so my GPA gets up as high as possible- show ADCOMS an upper trend in my grades for the two years I spent at the CSU.

I have def. struggled in the beginning, but I've put the pieces together and built myself up to be stronger and smarter about my future. I would however like to know if people think that I still have a chance? Sometimes I worry that even though I'm doing better now, schools will look down on my performance in the first three years at the CC and not look at me as a qualified applicant. And also, I plan on taking a year off after applying my senior year and going on a dental mission to a country abroad and volunteering OR do you guys think I should def. do a masters even though my GPA stays around 3.5 for two years at the CSU? Good plan?...your comments and opinions are appreciated!

I think you're going to need to do a masters program.

They will see that you did well the last two years.... but you didnt do so hot for 3 years and will have a hard time getting your GPA up where it needs to be.
I think that in order for you to prove yourself to them, you will need to get a solid GPA in a masters program (combined with a competitive DAT score).

You certainly have a chance... but you're going to have to work extra hard to make up for for first 3 years.

there is a similar thread to this.

like i said in the other thread you need to calculate what gpa you are going to end up with. i dont know how many classes you have taken and i dont know how many classes you will take.

there are many factors to take into consideration.

if your gpa isnt too bad and you do well on the dat, then i think you will be able to apply may of your senior year.

overall, i think you are on the right path. just keep working at it and see what gpa you end up with.

you want to get all As from now on.

If I were you I'd apply to all over the USA, forget Canada! Canadian schools only look at your numbers, not trends or anythign else. Do some volunteeering etc and do well on your DAT's.

The thing I appreciate about the USA way of selecting students is that they take a lot more into consideration about what actually makes a good student and they interview a wide range of students to get an even better understanding.

I have a GPA of 3.5 and never once got an interview for the times that I applied but instantly got an interview to NYU the first time I applied. I also got accepted at NYU. I think it was due to the fact that they look at a lot more then your grades, they require an essay, letter of recommendation, and a whole bunch of other relavent info....wheras canada only cares about your GPA and Dat.... cheesey in my opinion, not a real good understanding of who the person is...

👍 I think you have a good chance if you do well from here on out!

Yeah, Canada sucks.

I'm not even going to bother applying to any schools, maybe UBC though...

Definitely applying to U.S. schools when my time comes.

USA! USA! USA! Lo.oL.
