upper versus lower division?

yeah, that's my assumption. My school divides courses into 100 level, 200, 300, 400 ,500 etc... I wrote 100 and 200 as lower and 300+ as upper

Typically yes. But just because your a 1st or 2nd year doesn't mean you can take upperdivision courses! Usually the school you attend will have the course denoted as upper or lower division from the course registration number, description or some other sort of tag. typicallly here at davis, upper division courses have a CRN 100 and above. Your school might have something like that!
