Upstate High Priority Alternate List??

i believe upstate counts all out of staters second year as in state regardless if you own property.... I remember hearing that, maybe its my imagination... Doesn't affect me though since I am instate from the start.

I bet some of the houses though look pretty crappy, and need some repairs.... So you gotta factor that in and the hassle of fixing it all...

that might be just for first year students... You should call up and inquire about it. As to my circumstances its complicated given that my parents are divorced and each own property in two seperate states, along with them being in the military and entering it in NY...

seems like there has been some movement on this list, but no one is really posting it here or anywhere? Not from me, but I just read the post about the guy deciding between upstate and Tulane.. he got the call this week from Upstate??

Hello Everyone.

I want to do a head count. Who is still on this thread waiting for an offer besides myself?

----
Jolu-- ?
thedman -- ?
Davo -- Downstate likely, but waiting a little bit longer.
almondjoy -- likely or certain NYMC
e-spin-- Wayne State, and will decline due to logistics.
help -- H.B.C. list, optimistic about UB
----

anyone else still waiting?? anyone? Don't be shy. This is anonymous.🙂

thats me, I called last week, several times to get any info out of em that I could... not much going on except that J Welch said she was going on vacation and that the list was moving but slowly. Also there are still people holding onto multiple acceptances but they usually have a few weeks to decide.... and that they had called "about" 50 people or so from the HP list thus far... but could not tell what movement could occur in the next few weeks. Doesn't 50 people sound like alot? I thought maybe I was in the top 50!?

What's everyone doing about housing? (or your plans)

Too bad Madison and Jefferson are overbooked until fall. They are only a half mile from campus. Since we can't get a place there, us prospective commuters are going to have to park in the R-Lot which is literally one block from Jefferson and Madison (and also half a mile from campus), and then take a shuttle to Weinskotten? (R-lot is where 1st year students can park for free during the day).

Of course there is Clark - as Trizi is doing. But I want a kitchen and stuff. Hmm, there are lots of places available if you aren't picky -- but if you want a place with a dishwasher etc it's going to be about 630 a month for one bedroom.

anyone having any luck? -->orange housing somewhat useful.

Well, if one doesn't mind living in a dorm again, then Clark tower does have rooms that have kitchens/kitchenettes. Clark has suites or studios (which have kitchens and full bathrooms), in addition to standard double rooms.

It's probably easiest just to live in Clark for your first year at this point, if you get off the HPA list.

I'll be living in a studio (double) in Clark.

That sounds right. We now know they were almost half-way through the list when you call last week. On a personal tangent, she told me I was in the 'grayer middle area.' What does that mean? I won't speculate... Regardless, my gut feeling is-- we just had a quick spurt and are moving into a refractory 'lag-phase' while these people make up their minds. (but of course I'm biased by what I see on SDN).

---> So far: Trizi*, Geek666*, MrBobool*. PatricaNJ, idq1i, Geldrop*, and Gryphon

BTW Davo, we all know the true answer to this, but are the secretaries still saying yes or 'unpredictable' to hold-by-committee?🙂

I think geldrop should consider this too, since people who live in Clark can to keep their car in the garage for 33$ a month. Yea, dorm-life brings with it the tremendous opportunity to network and get to know fellow classmates -- going out downtown to Armory Sq. together on a weekend night, sharing copies of old exams , or even lecture notes, etc. Also the proximity to classes and the library is great.
And with all that being said the price isn't bad. But at 603$ a month for a studio at Clark, I can get a 1-bdrm with everything! (full kitchen and all the fancy appliances). This makes it a hard call. I guess it all depends on when they call, if ever. . .

Actually, I'll be in a two-person studio, so it's only $402 per month. The two-person suite is $603. I agree, though, that $600+ per month in Clark is a bit expensive.

It definitely depends on when and if you get the call. Just hang in there a bit longer............

i am living in a place called clarendon heights and it is a one bedroom apartment for 420 a month. it's not a high rise but like a little community type thing. it's a couple miles away from school so i'll be parking in the r lot. i just couldn't face living in a dorm again and it seemed kind of pricey, and i think it will be good to get away from med school people every once in a while. congrats to all those that got off the wait list and i'm looking forward to meeting you in a couple weeks.

did you guys get the orientation packet thing? what is the couples dinner on the last night? is it just for married couples or something? it all reminds me of freshman year orientation, hehe. oh well. should be fun i guess. i'm getting really nervous.

MDworks : I could see them getting to the Hold/alternate list, but only in some feverish last week type of manner, which would cause complete and utter chaos for those of us like me, who already has a place in NYC for Downstate this Fall!! BUt hey, whats the loss of your sanity within a week of Med school starting? errr

Funny I called to remove myself from the HPAL and sent a follow up letter a while ago, but Jennifer responded to my email yesterday anyway.
I asked what my chances were and if she couldnt tell me exactly how many people are above me to give me an estimate as to when I would hear from them...
This is what she said: The list is moving slowly, much more slowly than last yr. She said she doesnt know if they would get to me and if they did it would be sometime in August. She also said they accept clear up to Aug 20th.
I dont think this is anything different than the info we have gotten as a group but at least I know that I made the right decision to get off the HPA list...I was afraid that I might be next on the list and they wouldve called me if I hadnt dropped from the list. But it looks like that wouldnt have been the case anyway!!!

Well, good luck to all still waiting and a BIG congrats to those who made it off the list!!!

Cheers!

e-spin, that's depressing, she said almost same thing to me, except that I was in the 'gray' middle area. It's amazing how well Upstate has been keeping it's turnover down this year. It's a new record (worst HPA movement almost ever). Must have been second visit day.🙁

I could have sworn that J Welch said that they did not even get to the HPwaitlist last year, but she must have said this about the Hold/alt list? Seems like 50 or so people is alot... I am sure that this number will increase in the next few weeks when people are forced into programs by registration? I am pretty sure, also, that I would pay some damn good money to know where I am on that F@#$&ing magic list. One would think that with all the corruption in the big financial companies of this country, that we could at least scare up one admissions officer willing to make some loot😉

30 days to be exact... "Carolyn" told me that she likes to call people in the afternoons ( today is not out of the question) AND they have actually called people on the 20th HOWEVER>>> I will be registering at downstate on the 25th so.... ****

Do not try to bend the spoon, but simply realize, there is no spoon...

hi...long time no see guys....
just came back from vacation, that's why you haven't heard from me for awhile...
yup yup, i'm still on the list.....and from what j. welch said to me "safest bet is to reapply, but they may still call me in august", i'm already in the process of reapplying.....
hang in there everyone....
medicationworks, i think you rank higher than me, so good luck....

Sorry, I don't know of any apts in the area. But I was just curious to know what sort of stats people had who were getting called off the HPwait list ? Would anyone mind putting them up just for the sake of my sanity and comparison?

whaaat? Are you being serious or playing? What are your circumstances? Maybe this is exactely what I am looking to see... I had great interviews and was even told so by J. welch so I figured I would be at least in the top 50 of this list, given that I was invited for an interview and all that crap?!!? but I guess I am not.. so what is your situation? anyone? Geldrop esp.

Trust me its not strictly stats how its organized. Thats all it is, if it was stats I'd probably be one of the first to be called and wouldn't even be on the list in the first place. There is more too it, perhaps the interviewers giver a # score to you.... i don't know, but its not strictly gpa and mcat score... There is a bit of randomness involved.

If you really want to knokw whats going on just call up the office and see if you can get any more information. And if not don't guess because it could be incorrect...

If i were you, i'd just go to downstate. While the facilities and surrounding area can't compare to upstate... its an equally good program and even has some advantages like being in NYC!

Oh I am going to Downstate, but if Upstate calls me its really going to mess with my system at this point because I think its more my bag at upstate, considering I grew up in that area... I have also spoken with the admissions office several times and with several people, and they cannot tell me if they will get to me... you know the run around. J Welch did tell me that to be safe I should re-apply, but now I don't have to or want to for that matter. But thats about all I got, plus that my interviews were really good and nothing really held me back except that I interviewed late and that I did not explain my low science GPA Sophomore year in any of my personal statements etc... poop... I wish they could tell you your number, I mean why not?

its still moving... thats the daily word from the admissions office... as of this morning. God they must hate me, but they do know my name now! Keep your head up MDWorks... there is still plenty of hope for you... and us

OK the following places have no 1bdrm vacancies until fall:

The Greenway
Clarendon Heights
Hidden Valley
Madison
Jefferson
Chestnut Crossing

ugh.,..+pity+ Clark is looking more and more likely.. Unless I want to go crazy and spend 800$ a month. Of course, I could always work out of my car in the R-lot for a couple weeks.😀

Damn kid, you are really banking on 'the call.' looking for housing and all! I feel your pain, but I asked Carolyn today if she was going to call anyone this afternoon or tomorrow and she said no and that she was on Vaca tomorrow, so we can wait until next weeks big movement🙁 j Welch also said that she was going to be on vacation around this time and up until orientation..... 😴 😴

Hmm movement without Ms. Welch around? I guess it's possible, but she is the one responsible for deciding the when the calls are made. If it is true she is going on vacation until orientation, then there may be no movement until she gets back. Perhaps the class is full now- and movement has halted. Or maybe she is just trying to avoid you.😉 since you call every day. I'm sure the other 30+ people remaining on the list are also turning up the heat on her. Regardless, I'll touch base again with a contact this weekend and get the final word. (or at least one could hope).🙂

Clarks seems to be the best, you get a parking spot right in a garage on campus, and get furnature and stuff... I'd really like to live in Madison but there is no room... debating whether I shoudl just live in a hotel or something until there is room.

One could get a 2bdrm place, since it isn't too much more than a 1bdrm. You can make one room into a study area. Something to consider at least.. It would be pretty happening, albeit expensive. (probably couldn't do it at madison though)

when i looked at the apartments at clarendon i saw a two bedroom and it was pretty nice, it is about 600 and something for rent. so not too shabby and maybe you could find a roomie, in my opinion, anything is better than clark. i said goodbye to dorm living sophomore year of college.

i hope you guys get calls soon!

Hi everyone,

I never got to see what Clark looked liked and am living there next year. Is it really bad? Any info would be great. : )

I always kind of liked dorm living... meet a ton of people, and its so close to campus. And in Upstate's case you get to park your car in a garage, and thats important to me. I'm not in my room much anyways so don't really care if the place is dump or really tiny...

Freshman year in college i lived in a room 8x14 with a roomate, 2 beds 2 dressers, and 2 desks...

any of you people have a madison 2 bedroom and want a roomie?

Hey all,

Just wanted to inform you that I got a call today from the admissions office inviting me to come in for an interview for the EAP... I know this isn't what this thread is about but I was so excited I wanted to share it with fellow-future-Upstaters;-)

My interview is Sept. 8th-- any advice other than the usual?

Thanks!

Jonathan

clark tower is a good place to live especially for your first year
the price may seem expensive but when you consider you get free cable and free internet connection thats at least 60 a month anywhere else its not as bad. its a great place to meet people. They have also recently got new furniture. they improve things all the time. I am now starting my third year still living in clark. any questions pm me

most old exams are online you can get them there u will also have a big sib that can get you them. no one here is competative at least in my class

It's amazing. I got the call today from Dr. Keating! So much packing to do.. Miracles can happen.! He and Mrs. Welch said they were going to call someone after me. So I guess there is still hope for someone.. I'll see you guys over orientation week! :hardy:

  congrats ... I'm so happy for you

Way to go MedicationWorks! I, myself, am on the waiting list for one of the SUNY schools as well but I have gradually lost hope during the course of the summer. Anyhow, I am so glad that you made it, it really brightens my day to hear such good news. Best of luck at Upstate!! 🙂

MEDWORKS!!!! That absolutely ROCKS!!! Congrats!!!! I am so very happy for you! Knock'em dead at Upstate!!!

Spin😀 😀

Thanks everyone. Geesh this week has been hectic. I've been commuting from Rochester (80 miles away) for orientation. I finally got my aprt and I'm moving in tomorrow! Classes start monday. I really havent had time to breath. But no regrets.

All I can say is Dean Keating is the greatest dean in the world. He has been really helpful. See you guys around after I get situated.
