Hi everyone:

I'm trying to figure out which texts upstate uses for its first yr. class so that I can buy them off of amazon before the end of Aug when classes start.

I appreciate any responses with Book titles and editions along with which classes they will be used for if it is not apparent from the title. Thanks! -Lorin

My advice would be to wait until orientation. You will get a "Big Sib" 2nd year student. My "Big Sib" loaned me books, but that depends on your "Big Sib". MFM (Biochem) is the first class and most of the books for that class are useless if you have a decent background in Biochem. I don't remember the names of the books because I never used them. I would recommend the genetics book if you are weak in that subject. Otherwise, the syllabus is sufficient. Consider getting Lippincott's Biochemistry as a review book that you can use with the class and in preparation for USMLE.

For practice of medicine class, you will NEED Mosby's Physical Examination - Big Sib will not loan this as it is needed for 2nd year as well. However, a copy is on reserve (2 hours) in the library as are most required texts.

I would wait until later to get books for subsequent classes.

Good luck!
