This post is for everyone, especially medical students with partially similar background or so,

So I am a permanent resident (texas) applying this year. Half of the core course requirements are from a community college and some are from a very competitive four year institute (rice university) in Texas.
GPA is 3.93
MCAT = pending on results....possibly 30?? not sure....
disadvantaged status
independent
A lot of Extracurriculars
Doing research at a cancer institute now
Really interested in Texas state schools (i am a texas resident).
A very solid personal statement.

Please let me know if the community college courses will hurt my chances of getting into med schools?
Also, since some sore credits transferred from my international institute i am going to satisfy those with US earned credits this year. I have taken advanced courses (like biochemistry and advanced lab with A's in Rice)which have those as pre-reqs. its just the stupid technicality which is forcing me to repeat a few in US institute.

Please let me know if I have a decent shot in getting into med schools? Also, if you know of wny particular good med schools with students like me accepted, please suggest them.
I am stressed here now, so EVERY BIT of information helps. references welcomed.

Thanx and GOOD LUCK to u all!!

The community college courses don't hurt your chances for getting into medical school, but with that being said, schools will probably weigh your MCAT more heavily, and definitely will place more emphasis on the classes you took at your 4 year university. I went to a CC myself, and so did a number of my classmates, and the only time it becomes an issue is when people who did well in cc have a significant drop off in their GPA once they transfer, or if they do poorly on the MCAT.

Sounds as if you don't have a problem with either, so you have just as much of a shot as anyone else with similar stats. Best of luck.

Whether or not community college courses hurt depends. Did you take courses at the community college while you were enrolled at the 4 year institution? Or were you enrolled in the community college first, having taken the courses while there?

If you were at the CC first, it's no problem. If you chose to take the courses at a CC instead of at your home institution, that could hurt. They should qualify at most places, but they won't look as good as your home institutions courses. As for the international credits, I'm not sure how that works. You should e-mail AMCAS to get a concrete answer as to what type of credits satisfy requirements. As the people who process the application, they'll have the final word.

If your credits go through and you do get at least a 30 on your MCAT, yes you have a pretty good chance of at least getting interviews. You have a good GPA and some extracurriculars. One question, though: do you have any clinical experience (hospital volunteering, shadowing, hospital/doctor's office work)? If not, that's always good to have so look into it.

3.93 GPA and around a 30 on the MCAT

Really?

🙂@ darknight: Thanx. My GPA in community college was 3.92 and i maintained my rice GPA at 3.93 so no significant drop there. Any further recommendations? Thanx for the heads up man! i worked about 40 hrs a week when I was in community college.

😎@ azrael: I took community college before transferring to Rice. Took bio 2, orgo 1 and 2, biochem and advance lab from Rice. However, I am taking physics 1 from a community college to graduate on time and complete pre reqs for this cycle......
I did medical internship at duke medical school last summer. I did follow a lot of specialists and doctors there. might have a rec letter from there too. Also volunteered at memorial hermann hospital a year ago. Recently doing research at MD Anderson, Texas.

@poliscidoc: haha.....i am assuming that this was encouragement. Feel free to be as harsh in your opinions as u can---i work best when i have upfront opinions.

let me know guyz, if there is anyone or anything in my capacity. For some reason, after reading a bunch of threads here and stuff, I really feel incompetent wrt community college and all...

tc

I don't think anyone but the snobbiest adcom is going to care that you took CC classes concurrently. You've already demonstrated your academic capacity from your high GPA from Rice. If you get a good MCAT score, you should be very competitive.
