I feel for your situation since I too was a transfer student and ran into all of those problems, but I think it might be a bit too confusing for some of the dental schools. One thing to remember is that not all schools require biochem (though many do), so check what schools you want to apply to.

I transferred from one college to another and need to take Biochemistry before I graduate - hopefully next year as a junior. The problem is that I won't be able to officially take the class this year or next year since I'll have inevitable time conflicts with classes I'm required to take in my major. I can't even audit our BioChem class my junior or senior year because of the inevitable time conflicts, and don't want to waste a summer taking BioChem ( I already did that for Orgo).

Anyways my question to you is does this sound feasible:
What if I talk to the BioChem teacher and ask to take the class informally (without anything showing up on my transcript) and take tests and go to class as usual but ask for a letter from him/her at the end saying what kind grade I got in the class. I'd have a copy of that letter sent out with all my apps but Idk if it'll fly with different schools.

What do you guys think? I need to know by Monday since registration for next term starts then!!!

That's ridiculous and will cause so many more problems than it will fix. Schools won't know which class you took because it is not on your transcript.

Dental schools will accept it, because it is a medical/dental school level course. Comparable to taking biochemistry at a top 10 or 20 undergrad school.

Online schooling and me don't mix very well besides brah I go to a top ten undergrad school and I feel cheated that I can't take one class I need even though by the time I graduate I'll have tried to take it for three years.

I know what you mean. There are classes I want to take but can't because of time conflicts. Somehow all the classes I was planning on taking in the fall are all scheduled at the same time. So much for that $50k tuition.

Can you take it over the summer? If you're applying after senior year, you could take it at another school after you graduate.

If not, I would seriously talk to the department head and complain. If there are so many time conflicts that you haven't been able to take the class in 3 years, then they need to add more sections or something. They shouldn't be making it hard for you to take all the classes you need.

if d school is really important to you, i think you can find the money and take the time to take one more class. everybody has problems with scheduling and if you tell the d school that you couldnt find the time to take a class that they say you should take, dont you think that will make you look uncommitted in their eyes?

There is no way a Dental school would buy it, and it would probably raise quetions to what other classes have you done this with and just not sent in a letter because you did poorly. I think everyone who is going into Dentistry had to give up a ton for it. If D school is really important to you,then you should just do it over the summer, if not it is probably not what you really want.

I doubt that schools which require biochem will accept a prereq that is not explicitly on your transcript. The best way to answer this question is to go to the source: call a school you are considering applying to, and ask them if they would accept this.

You do have the option of simply not taking biochem and only applying to schools which do not require it as a prerequisite. I could not fit biochem into my schedule so I never took it. I applied to 16 schools which did not require it (and I am sure there are far more than 16 of them who don't require it).

Do I think I will be at a slight disadvantage in d-school to students who have taken this class? I think it's a possibility. But I also feel that if the d-schools I applied to felt this was the case, they, too, would require it.

If I were you, I'd look at the two main options told to me:

1. take the online class
2. take it in summer and deal with it.

take the class as independent study/variable credit. it goes on your transcript and you just work with the prof on a grading system. i did that for a bio of cancer class in grad school and it was awesome because i got to design my own class basically and got a lot of good research experience out of it.

Biochemistry is the kind of class that would be a luxury to take all on its own, even if you could only do it during the summer. As a matter of fact, I liked it so much that I am going to take it again! (ha ha)

I went to a TOP 5 undergrad school and am going to TOP 5 dental school. They welcomed this medical school level class, and I found it every bit as challenging as my work at the TOP 5 undergrad.

You can take it this summer outside of the school you are transferring to. You dont have to have it approved by your school or anything even but it will satisfy the requirement for dental schools
