Hey guys, just out of curiosity, who here is a URM and has received an acceptance or interview invite?

We all know MDapps can be a little unreliable when it comes to somethings

I view mdapps once in a while.
I see someone with similar stats get like 15 invites when they applied to mostly top 20 schools.
It is during this application cycle and that gives me hope.
I go back up and look at their stats again.
"Male, 22, Hispanic"

Sad but true.

Not trying to start a war here.

Just want to know what URMs here got in/invited.

@flatearth

Oh good! That means I can slack off and still get in.
...oh wait

I know one girl, who grew up in middle high class white neighborhood and had a lawyer father(white) and a teacher mother(caribbean).

Her father bought her a mid-size sedan and a house with 4 bedrooms right next to campus. She was naturally inclined to join a southern, white sorority then realized the importance of emphasizing her genetic identity and joined minority premed club.

After getting multiple Cs in orgo and physics and Bs in majority of upper level bio courses and having downward trend GPA, mid 20 MCAT, no research, and about 100 hours of volunteering, she got into two schools where minority student body, primary care and serving for the underserved are highly emphasized. Some of her URM friends were furious for taking a spot from them.
Now she is going for a lucrative specialty such as orthopedics.

I mean, she is a genius. If I were in her shoes, I would have done the same instead of volunteering for 500 hours, gaining second author pubs, poster, and senior thesis, and studying everyday to get 3.75+ gpa and 30+ mcat.

You can serve underserved populations through any specialty in medicine.

OP, you should try posting in the URM forum. Generally there is a thread there for the current applications 🙂 You can discuss without some of the tension of the pre-allo board

I am URM with an average GPA and a 28 MCAT (11 in verbal! 🙂). I've only gotten one interview invite. I am also a reapplicant. I was rejected from every school my first time with no interviews (same MCAT and GPA). I have since gotten a masters in research and worked harder on my essays. It still has been hard for me! Just because I am Hispanic does not mean I get a wild card!

Maybe your school list isn't the best?

I wonder how I would do this cycle if I was Hispanic like my SO.... (I encourage her to apply but she wants to be a teacher 🙄 )

Maybe, it could also be that I'm a Texas resident, and Texas has a lot of Hispanic applicants. There are so many variables, unfortunately (and fortunately). Hopefully this time is the charm! 🙂

Actually, being from TX just makes it easier.

How would people feel if we started a thread for just Caucasians who got accepted?

... (I encourage her to apply but she wants to be a teacher 🙄 )

I was a teacher for 3 years. When she realizes she's working 80 hrs a week and they're not even paying her 40, she might change her mind. Those long vacations? You don't get paid for any of them. I think we had 3 or 4 paid holidays out of the entire year (xmas day, thanksgiving...okay, maybe only 2). Administrators dangle the "well-being of children" over you in such a way that it makes you feel like a total screw up if your life doesn't revolve around work. There are lazy teachers, don't get me wrong, but if you're a driven person that cares about what you're doing with your life education will rip you apart (unless it's kindergarten).

I do miss my students, but I also feel like I escaped from prison. 😎

Also guys, I'm not too fond of this thread.

Please, keep it civil.

so true

Stop being a dick on SDN. You and flatearth are the worst. And with him, it's probably just a character flaw.

No one is being a "dick". The point is that every school is going to accept people who are URM just like every school is going to accept Caucasians. There is no point for either thread. Not that anyone appears to be taking this thread seriously anyway.

I will show her this post! Thanks!

This thread is lame and the fact that people actually tried to rant about this man that just shows character. What a bright bunch of future doctors...... or should I say "wanna-be doctors" 😴

BTW, what grade did you teach? She's looking into 3rd grade.

Either this is bad grammar, or this thread is about a man and I completely missed it.

Feels good being a URM.

brb getting into every single school I apply to next summer.

Non-URMs, you mad?

Yeah you mad.

I like how you are busy getting into schools you haven't applied to yet. I guess as a non URM I'll say brb, getting rejected from all schools I haven't applied to this cycle.

If you actually received rejections from schools you didn't apply to, you must have done something pretty major to piss them off.

It's called being white apparently.

entirely according to others on this thread.

It wouldn't really make sense seeing how the majority of SDN users are non-URM.

the-absolute-best-of-the-anti-joke-chicken-meme.jpg

While that may be true it is not a verifiable fact. Also you missed my point, which I elucidated later, entirely. There will be URM students at every school. All I would need to do is post a list of all the med schools just like I could do for white people and it would be exactly the same.

shut up.

In all seriousness, what if you are half-white and half-URM? Then what happens? (And I am being serious here... some of us are from mixed ethnicities). I guess they are considered white?

I really didn't want an aurgument here. I just wanted to know which SDN users are URMs and received acceptances and interview invites

It's sad, yet predictable, how off-topic this thread became.

Ok, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it sounds like you're talking about me.

If this is the case, I'm not URM cuz I'm an int' student. Just saying...

It is not like URM's take other peoples spots. I am sure schools create additional spots for those applicants.

Even though the applicants can get in with lower GPA/MCAT, they still go through the rigorous medical training and become successful. Not saying they all do, but not all white/asian do either.

The bolded statements appear to contradict. 🙄
