Couldn't find this in the search so I'm curious.

How difficult would it be to apply to Canada for medical school? I'm a US citizen, and I know I could have a student visa to study - and maybe eventually practice there - but I'm curious on how much preference is given to Canadian prospective students over American, what requirements there are, and so on.

I have a couple of years before I get into the application process, but I'm looking at all my options. Thanks in advance!

The medical schools in Canada are very competiitve. In fact I know several people who went to US for med school since they couldn't get into Canada's. Your best bet would be McGill University. About 1/3 of the spot are reserved for Americans. You need to have a GPA of at least 3.8/4.0, plus the usual extracurricular stuffs. I'd suggest you to call them and inquire about your specific situation (Visa, eligeable for Canadian residency ect).

Good luck!

Did not know this. Why is this? Is French proficiency required? Just find it surprising that the most US-friendly med school is in the heart of the Francophone Canada.

As fungusflu mentioned, McGill accepts four or five international students (including Americans) to their undergrad medical program. This is unusual in that most Canadian medical schools only admit Canadians.

There are various academic and other requirements - you can see them all here
http://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/applying/categories/int.

The average GPA of interviewed applicants was 3.76 (4 point scale) and the average MCAT was 33.7.

PS - It is important to note that you would NOT be eligible for matching for residency in Canada through CaRMS unless you became a Canadian citizen / permanent resident.

That is news to me, the last I heard several years ago, at most 10 spots are reserved for out of province students, now the number is probably smaller than that.

The projected number of seats for internationals at McGill for their MD program in 2012 is 4 or 5.

Unless McGill only accepts fifteen students into their MD class, "1/3" is pretty far off.
