Hi everyone,

I am a Dutch student doing a research on veterinary nutrition. As it is really hard for me to find out how it works in the US from over here I was wondering if anyone could help me out on some simple questions regarding the veterinary pet food, or if anyone knows someone I perhaps could contact. I am writing my final thesis which is an exportplan for a veterinary nutrition from Europe. I would like to figure out which brands are currently offered and why these brands are so successful. Also if there would be room for another veterinary nutrition. I really hope anyone could help me out a bit all information could be helpful.

Thank you in advance and I really do appreciate your time!

Which brands are currently offered? I would wager that in the US there are probably at least 6 or 7 dozen different brands of dog and cat food alone (not counting foods for other types of pets, let alone farm animals). Collecting them all could be done by filtering through the internet. Most are from the major players (Purina, Hills, Mars), but there are many other multi-brand producers, small "boutique" brands, and brands that are sold by particular retail stores but made by a different pet food company.

Thank you for your response. I know that brands like Royal Canin, Purina and Hills are the main players at veterinary hospitals/clinics. But are there other brands offered at veterinary hospitals? And the prescription products aren't available online is that correct?
I would love to talk preferable over phone (or otherwise by emailing) with people working at veterinary hospitals if you perhaps have suggestions, or maybe could help me out yourself. I do really appreciate your help.

There may be other brands offered at vet clinics (that is the choice of the owner -- they can carry what they choose), but those manufacturers also make several over-the-counter brands as well. For instance, Purina makes a veterinary-only line of foods, but they also make at least 5 or 6 different brands that are sold over the counter in pet stores and grocery stores. Royal Canin (owned by Mars) makes a veterinary-only line, but they also make an over-the-counter line, and a line they sell just to breeders. The foods carried in veterinary clinics are not "prescription" foods, though most of them are limited to being sold by veterinarians. A veterinary clinic would likely not sell a brand of food that people could buy elsewhere, since it's not a very wise business decision (for reasons of space and cost).
