USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got my 3rd active consideration letter (I interviewed in Nov.)! It says... "Of the 97 applicants interviewed (from the Feb. 23rd interview group), 45 have been offered admission... 35 applicants have been placed in an "active consideration" status... TWO candidates from the November and January "active consideration" group were admitted... 72 applicants from all interviews have been denied."

only two??!!

Thanks for posting the stats!
Just by looking at the number of acceptance per interview, looks like the people from the first interview had it the worst. 🙁

Do you guys know how many seats left for the last interview then? Sounds like there is no more than 30 seats for 100 people.

347 interviewed(+/-) -72 rejected = 275 accepted/active consideration
+100 March interviewees
1st interview 55/95 split (no rejections, at least initially) [post 231]
2nd interview no solid stats posted, but ~80-100 accepted (25-45 from Jan)
3rd interview 45/35 (apparently 17 rejected from February alone)

~145 seats/185 offered (40 left)
at least 2 declined [in thread] (~42 left)
active consideration (~347-~145-72)=~131
131+100=231 potential acceptees/42 spots ~5/1

If same thing happens as last year ~220 accepted-145 already offered=80
231/80 ~3/1

If Nerv or someone on active consideration from January wants to post active consideration letter stats from the 2nd interview, it might be a little more accurate, but this is probably good enough for most.

How many people get accepted from the TAAP program? Is it easier to get in as TAAP or are you guaranteed?

Not as many as you'd think, and I believe they're included in the 450 interviewees. Though, I do believe they're guaranteed as long as they meet GPA and TAP requirements. I'd have to check to be sure though.

One of the P1's that I was speaking to (during my interview day) said that she got in through the TAP program. She mentioned that she did not have an interview to get into the Pharm.D. program, rather she had an interview to get into the TAP program a few years back.

I am sorry to hear that! I do understand how you feel, I was recently rejected by one school too..
Did you only apply to USC??? If you got an interview from them, I am sure you are a fine applicant.
So, just read that rejection letter twice and burn it (haha....). Then, you can move on. There is always next year... Good Luck!

I always hear people talks about USC is known for the Trojan spirit, What is it exactly? All I know is the connection and collabration. Can someone help me out on that?
Also, are there any research opportunities for pharmD students in the program? Thanks.

Hey

I live in the bay area and I haven't received anything from USC yet.. I was placed on active consideration list since the November interview. I'm so anxious as I have already been rejected by two schools.. I guess I am starting to lose self-confidence by whole lot 🙁 Anyone from the bay area?

Thanks

Hi

yea I am currently a senior at UC Berkeley. I came to LA yesterday for spring break so I can't even check my mail until I get back a week from now :scared:
Well good luck to you, and let's hope for the best 🙂

I am sorry you got rejected but what is so bad about nursing? You will still make a decent amount of $ (especially in specialties) and you help people. If you really like the pharm field there are phD programs out there too.
This is my second time applying and I know how it feels(or will once they reject my sorry *** after April) but there are still many great options. So keep your head up.

I just received my third "active consideration" letter. I was so worried that it would be a rejection letter... now, I feel better.... haha.... 🙂🙂

Everyone and their mothers in the Bay Area graduated from Berkeley 😀

Does anyone know how many words or paragraphs in the article we have to read?

@ Sabrina

If I remember, it was about 4 standard paragraphs long. Best of luck!

i'm going to decline my acceptance to usc. just heard from tx tech, and i decided to choose family/love over ranking. good luck to the rest of ya'll. i hope someone here will be able to fill my spot! :luck:

That is a great choice and I am not only saying this because I want your spot. I am from Louisiana and it is hard living out here. You have to hang out with people from North India just to get a hold of spicey food and everyone is always saying totally (even dudes).
Good luck and enjoy that southern hospitality for me.

For those of you who got accepted, did you guys take science courses over the summer? The usc website says that they highly prefer students not to do that.🙁

For the essay portion of the interview, do you guys know how many sentences should be used to summarize? Thanks.

@ sabrina.

yes, you have 5 minutes to take notes and read the article. g'luck! it's next weekend right?

You only have one side of a page to summarize. I used every line, so I was thorough but at the same time succinct. I'm sure I could have done it in less, but I wanted to make it coherent with different types of transitions.

Thanks. Were you in the Feb 23rd interview? Did you get in? Can you share some suggestions for the interview?

Yes, I was conditionally accepted (have to finish my prereqs with 3.0 or above).

Here was some advice I gave to someone who PM'ed me:

If you practice the questions on the USC interview database on SDN, I think you will do fine. It is a good idea to analyze your responses: where can I explain more, is there a confusing point, how will the interviewer follow up on my response, etc.

The best advice I can give you for interview day is practice with the pharmacy students in the lobby - get warmed up. You should sit down in one of the chairs and just chat with people and the pharmacy students. When the interview starts, it'll just be like that! Also, when you are being walked to the interview room, don't walk too fast or you'll work yourself up - take it slow.

The USC interview process was great compared to the others I went to. The students were approachable, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Jim, the admissions dean, is a fantastic speaker, and he will make you feel less nervous about the whole process.

The important thing to realize during an interview is that you don't have to rush. It's not always necessary to instantly answer all the questions. You can take some time to think about it. Don't feel like you need to respond quickly or that there is a time limit. This was one of the things I wished I realized sooner.

Good luck with your interview!

** About the taking your time thing, I wanted to emphasize that it's likely better to think about a question and answer it intelligently rather than rush into a response that you can't defend.

powertooid, thanks. I think I will do good in this coming interview.

P.s. how highly do you think usc weighs gpa? Mine is a 3.93 currently as a junior.

I took science classes over the summer. First quarter of organic chemistry one summer. And then Metabolic Biochemistry and Genetics the second. HTH!

If Nerv or someone on active consideration from January wants to post active consideration letter stats from the 2nd interview, it might be a little more accurate, but this is probably good enough for most.

stat for Jan (2nd) interview:
100 interviewed
42 offered admission
58 placed in active consideration
0 rejected
7 offered admission from Nov (1st) interview

I have a few "W"s on my transcript. Did anyone get admitted into USC with withdrawals?

I withdrew from one of my science classes, failed and repeated another science class, but I still got in.

Did anyone receive any letters over the past two days? I interviewed on Feb. 23 and I still haven't received anything yet... I am beginning to worry. Has anyone of you who interviewed on Feb.23 still not received anything from USC like me? I thought the dean said we would be getting a response from them in 3-4 weeks...

I'm applying for fall of 09 and I have a quick question about finding out how one knows whether they get accepted or not. Do they send the acceptance letter only or can they call you saying you got accepted or do they email you. The reason is that I don't know whether to put my home address(no one home except for winter break) or school(dorm) address for the mail to be sent. What a dilemma... Have any of you guys just called and asked whether you got accepted? I find that to be quickest way.

In addition, if you get accepted, do you call to accept it or accept it online. Thanks!

Most institutions do not reveal decisions over the phone or via email (although there are exceptions). I would say use whatever mailing address is more accessible to you.

Given the importance of the information and time sensitivity, I'd suggest using the address that will provide the most timely delivery to you. Your acceptance letter will come in the mail, but on occasion they may also have students call you to congratulate you on your acceptance. Confirmation is also done through the mail. You can call or email, but you'd still have to mail in your confirmation with your deposit.

55/95 Nov
42/58 Jan
45/35 Feb

142 accepted 188 active consideration 17 rejected

(Provided that all the numbers are accurate.)

See ya on Saturday

So you can't do a credit transaction online for the deposit?

Anyway, both locations are not good for me since the time(4-5wks after the interview date) the acceptance letter are mailed out are in the middle of my finals for the fall session. This means I might just have to send it to my home address. But if I get accepted later that means I would have to drive a long ways home to mail out the deposit.😡

Just forward your mail, or call and update your address when you move back home after the semester's over. Address changes are a normal aspect of student life, they understand that. Beside's if you have it mailed home, your parents can just as easily send in the check for you I'd think.

Hi, farmercyst. Will you be interviewing students on Sat? Also, only pharmacy students from yr2 to yr 4 are allowing to do interviews, right? Thanks. Hope to see you there.🙂

Hello,

I just got a call for an interview this coming Saturday. I'm so excited because I thought I will never hear from USC. My interview time is 9:40am. Does anybody know how early do we have to be there in advance? 9:40am is the appointment time but there's still orientation and stuff before the interview right? I'm not sure how USC works with this appointment schedules. If someone can tell me, it'll be great. Thanks so much!

AutumnCloud😍

Hey, everyone! I turned down my acceptance to USC, so there's one more spot available! Good luck to everyone!

Good job keep them coming. So last year I was 71/80 on the waitlist. I believe that just makes about 65 more declines and I will be sitting pretty.😍

How does the adcom select individuals for the Nov. Interviews? Is it based on how early the application is sent before the deadline? GPA based? Or a combination of both? If it is a combination, which one do you think is more important to them, GPA or earliness of submitting app? The reason I'm asking is that I hope I get accepted shortly after the nov. interview(hypothetically saying if I do get accepted) or else I'll be taking 20hrs for my second semester.:scared: I'm already going to have to take 20hrs next semester.😱
