USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you meant "3.2 GPA>"(I'm assuming your GPA is less than a 3.2). If you can't get the less than or greater than signs right before pharmacy school, you might have a problem. I just had a K-type exam and some of the questions had those exact signs... such and such lab values less than or greater than the normal call for dialysis, surgery, additional drug therapy, etc.

lol, or maybe it was just a typo and he meant to say his 3.2 GPA?

If it's a big yellow envelope, it must be it.

In the envelope, there's a "deposit form", where you put down date, social security#, name, address, phone, signature, and you check "enclosed $500. For Fall **" (you fill in the blank to indicate it's fall08). Mail the $500 by 2/29. Oh, it can't be personal check, but cashier's check or money order. I'm not sure how important the "deposit form" is. It's just a half sheet of paper. If they really care about it that much, you can call them and see if they will send you a electronic form so you can print it out.

The letter also says to complete your pre-reqs by 8/18. Maintain a 3.00+ GPA. Reserve your 8/19-8/22 for a mandatory orientation.

That's about it.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to ask Jim about what to do.

Oh my god, I mean to make a period sign but hit ALT key by error. I can't believe a future pharmacist like you is not forgiving and open-minded at all. Please do not criticize others to make yourself better. You might be better in one area but not all!

The thing about future pharmacists is that they are all current humans and as such can be either assumptive or reactive depending on a variety of factors. Generally it's best to realize that when we operate on less than perfect information we can end up with less than perfect results. (That's probably the nicest it can be said.) I wouldn't worry too much about anything you can't control, such as other people's responses. In the mean time :luck: on active consideration. Things will get much clearer after the March interview. Last year mine was on St Patty's day and it was very good luck.😀

Must be so exiciting for those of you who got accepted at USC. I got my "active consideration" letter yesterday. sucks! On the interview day Jim G. said that if you are on that list means you have very slight chances of getting in as no one has been rejected yet . So if you are way up high on that list , there still might be chance. Although the good news is I got my first Acceptance letter from Touro......something to fall back on.

Jim's not really in a position to give everyone hope. He certainly doesn't want to give anyone the wrong impression. Plenty of people give up their spot every year making way for people on the waiting list. While there will never be 100% of interviewees accepted, this year has a lower interviewee to class size ratio which means there's a better chance for acceptance. That may be why they haven't rejected anyone yet. There'll be a lot more motion in active consideration after March. It was that way last year, probably will follow suit this year as well.

definitely good news for me

I'm sorry, genuinely sorry. I probably just had a bad day. The test was tough!

Believe it or not, I try to help pre-pharm students. I can't make miracles, but I'm here for y'all. I remember what it was like as an undergrad, pre-pharm student.
When I get PMed with questions about stats, interview suggestions, and school stuff, I try my best to answer them.

So... please try not to be mad. Things are better when you're glad. 😡<🙁<😳<🙂<😀 Again, I'm sorry.

I was having a bad day too. I was so frustrated with all the waitlisting and active consideration!

I was waitlisted too. I had applied to only one school, and I submitted the application on the last possible day- the day it was due! I think I was waitlisted, because my application was so late. My LORs came in earlier, but it was a tough summer before pharm school. I didn't know what to expect.

Hopefully they'll call you off sooner rather than later. That would help with the anxiety :scared:.

Hey guys... I was just wondering if the people on active consideration could post their stats?

GPA - 3.69
Pharmacy experience - 7 years.... at both retail and inpatient (hospital)

Thanks and good luck to all!!! :luck:

I was interviewed in November and got an active consideration letter yesterday as well.......... This whole waiting part is killing me...... but I guess I can do nothing else but to wait 🙁

My GPA at the time I was applying was 3.59.. but it should've gone up since I got good grades in Fall 07.

Have research experience, hospital volunteer, community pharmacy volunteer, retail shadowing experience, some work experience and served as an officer in a health society..

I guess my interview wasn't that great... 🙁

When was your interview, if you submitted it late? Mine was submitted fairly late, as well.

I feel you on the waiting. I waited from Oct 13 2006 to April 2007 just to get rejected from Oregon State. Got rejected from Loma Linda a month before that. Waitlisted at Western in February and Waitlisted at USC in March. Finally got in May 07 to USC and June 07 to Western. So I waited for 8 months to get in. Once you're in though, the wait doesn't seem to matter so much anymore. My cumulative GPA was a 3.49 (3.59/Sci)

did you do anything while waiting like writing a letter of intent to the school? would that even help?

No, I let my application and interview stand. I didn't figure there was much more I could add. My intent to go to their school if accepted I didn't figure would sway anything. I talked to someone yesterday who said he showed up to USC with his acceptance to UCSF and UCSD. He was accepted the next week. I doubt there was a causal relationship though. He was accepted off the waitlist at the same time I was and I did no such thing. I suppose you could ask Jim if there was anything that could be done post-interview to move your application up the list, but I seriously doubt anything beyond keeping your transcripts updated.

FYI the first of the financial aid deadlines is this week.
FAFSA deadline.
http://www.usc.edu/schools/pharmacy/pharmd/fa/materials.html
FAFSA deadline is 3/2, but it says should be completed 2 weeks early to ensure receipt by the deadline.
Even if you haven't been accepted, you should meet the deadlines if you think you may be attending USC in the Fall.

Note- I do not go to USC. At my pharmacy school, they didn't do interviews in 2005 or 2006. In 2006, the interviews were canceled by the university; I assume this decision was made after the hurricane. The university probably couldn't justify spending the time to do them when they could be working to get the school back in order.

I almost think an interview would have gotten me off the waiting list sooner. I used to do pageants in high school, so I know how to interview. For example, one of the questions back in the pageant days was: If you could describe yourself using three words, what words would those be? (you would answer with the word plus your reasoning) Inspired- blah, blah, blah Enthusiast- blah, blah, blah Dedicated- blah, blah, blah. Before I started doing those pageants, I used to over-analyze everything that I would say; they taught me how to be concise when I'm limited on time. I really enjoyed doing the pageants. They got me out of my shell. There's one in December that I really wanted to compete in, but I didn't think I was ready last year. I'll be ready this year though! 😀

I asked my school if updating my application would help, but they said they didn't need anything until I was accepted. After they called, I brought my diploma in. I had graduated the summer before I started pharm school. I was so proud of that thing! Heck, I'm still proud of it 😛.

I think you can put a few different schools on that application. You just need the schools' financial aid codes. I was able to list my undergrad school and the pharm school(before I got accepted into pharm school).

With your stat, I thought they would accept you right away. My friend was watlisted in Jan last application term, and got accepted in March. Her GPA was 3.5. I think you will get in.

I've never heard of anybody got accepted with a 3.2 GPA though!

Best,

Smallkitty00

I've met a USC pharm student who got accepted with a 3.2GPA, some pharmacy experience, and 2~3(?) years of undergrad research.

Anyone get the invitation for March interview? I am still waiting...🙁

do you guys think that having four more science classes and a BA in progress is a lot this late in the game? i'm still on active...and im only taking classes for usc at this point bc im done with my requirements for the other schools i applied to but USC is my first choice.

Not sure what you mean?

Anyone "lacking" alot of prereqs get an interview?

im just worried that having 4 course and my BA in progress is going to decrease my chances of getting accepted...any thoughts? anyone else in my boat?

Honestly, I think you still have a very good chance. But the pre-pharm adviser at our school seems to think it does affect the application process (if you have a lot of pre-req class still in progress). But you have already gotten an interview, which is very important, that means they think your application was strong enough.

I've known a lot of students that still had a BA/BS in progress (but completed it by spring) and got into USC.

Just wondering... are you contemplating dropping your classes and not finishing your BA? I think you should continue regardless.

it is tempting to drop and i ahve thought about it..but since it is my number one choice i'm going to take all the classes and pray that i get in and maintain a high GPA.

I was wondering when FAFSA form is due for USC. I've already submitted my graduate school form for USC, but I'm not sure whether the deadline for online FAFSA form is March 1st or 2nd. Can somebody let me know, thanks!😉

I was confused about that after reading an e-mail too. It says it should be MAILED by Feb 22,08. Not sure how it goes for online FAFSA.
I am thinking that online FAFSA should be completed before March 2nd anyways, because it takes some tome for your FAFSA EFC to be calculated and results to be send to schools.

But I think I will call USC to make sure.
It is just that my parents' return is not ready... Anyone has the same issue?

official fafsa deadline is march 3rd but USC said you should try and get it in at least 2 weeks before the deadline

i'm faxing my financial aid supplemental document. it's only 1 page

You can use an estimate from last year to complete your FASFA....the parent information form is not due until April or May I believe, which is when you send in copies of tax returns & complete the parent info form! So an estimate of parents income is ok now

Hey,

Isn't the deadline for us entering USC for the first time as a grad student 5/5/08?? It says on the website

New Graduate 2008-2009 FAFSA Application and Supplemental Application deadline:5/5/08..

Isn't 3/3/08 for undergrad or continuing grad students?
😕

i wouldn't pay attention to anything else but the email they sent out, that has all the important dates....did you get an email? if not....here ya go:

Mail a completed Graduate Supplemental Financial Aid Form to the USC School of Pharmacy Financial Aid Office by February 22, 2008 to ensure that it is received by the School of Pharmacy deadline of March 3, 2008. All USC Financial Aid forms can be found at www.usc.edu/schools/pharmacy/pharmd/fa/materials.

All Students should mail their completed 2008-2009 Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Federal Processor by February 22nd, 2008 to meet the Federal deadline of midnight Eastern Time on March 3, 2008.

Mail completed copies of the students’ and parents’ signed 2007 Federal Income Tax Returns, including all schedules and W-2 forms, to the USC School of Pharmacy Financial Aid Office by April 14, 2008 so that they are received by the University deadline of May 4, 2008.

Submit a complete and signed copy of the Parent Information Form by April 14, 2008 so that it will be received by the deadline of May 5, 2008.

i think FAFSA will follow me for the rest of my life. To be honest, I hate doing it, but I need the financial help.

I don't have my passport with me. Do you guys think they would care if I sent it in on March 10? It's not like they can't assume I'm a citizen for a while. 😀

I'll look again. Post the link if I find it.

Here's what I'm reading:

All students, continuing or entering (whether they have been accepted or not), should complete their financial aid forms by the required deadlines.

Same link as before.

hey guys,

has anyone else gotten march interview invites yet??? e-mail? snail mail?? or phone call??

One person posted saying a friend of theirs did, but that's 2nd hand so who knows for sure. I haven't asked, so I couldn't say.

Thanks farmercyst...I did read that post above. I know that's second hand also, but haven't heard of anyone else yet receiving an invite?? Hopefully, they will be sending invites next week?

Okay, I walked downstairs and asked admissions and they said that interview invites for March should go out next week. (No, I will not ask who they're being sent to.)

A number of people have asked if there is anything that can be done post interview to get yourself off of active consideration. I was told the only thing you can do is keep sending in your updated transcripts. Apparently applications are regraded after each update. So if your GPA is boosted by sending in a new transcript, then ASAP is better than waiting. The same probably goes for having your degree posted (though I didn't ask that specifically, it seems a logical conclusion)

Great!!!! Thanks Farmercyst so much for the reassurance! I appreciate your going out of your way to help us students out with any USC info
