USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm surprised, no posters from yesterday's interview. How did it all go? I thought my interview went well, however it ended up being really short, probably 10+ minutes before everyone else's, yikesss. So now I have mixed feelings. The vibe i got from the school and students was great tho, a lot more personality than uop.

That's how I felt too! There's a great confident vibe from the students and faculty.

The UOP interview program felt unprofessional and "weak".

Do any of you know how does he residency and fellowship work? What organizaion offer these programs? Do the pharmacy schools offer any of these programs? Thanks.🙂

Can I ask how much time did they give you for the summary? Is that 10 min/s for ready and 10min for writing? Just want to know how much time I have. Thanks.

Check out the ASHP website. It's probably an overload, but it should cover everything you want to know upfront. Essentially residencies can be setup by schools or by businesses (hospitals, Pharma corporations, retail chains, etc.) They are generally associated with one area of practice (hospital, community, industry, etc) and can be specific or general. Typically PGY-1 is generalized and PGY-2 is more specific (pediatrics, drug information specialist, etc) Fellowships are a different story. My understanding is these are generally research-based. I don't know much about them as I'm not very interested in that route.

after an extra long week of waiting and going crazy for my response (usc sent it to my previous address).. i got in! go trojans!

i've just created my oasis account to view the status regarding my financial aid status. i'm a bit confused. it lists my fafsa application under required (documents and information you need to submit). however, i submitted this a few weeks ago electronically. am i suppose to fax my SAR report directly to them or something?

just to double check, you're suppose to use the university park code right? there's no special fafsa code for school of pharmacy?

thanks in advance for your help!

(YAY USC 😍... this is finally happening!!!)

I don't think you need to send the SAR report. I sent my fafsa in early feb. and its listed on my oasis account (I also use the university park code). I think they are backed up right now

Last year the financial aid documents were listed as some variation of pending all the way until July. I'd say if you submitted FAFSA then they'll get it and work on it as time permits, but I wouldn't be too surprised if you don't see an update in the status online. If you do, great, if not I'd just call them if you're really concerned about anything.

when do they notify us for the march interviews???? it's been forever..

i got into UCSD after putting down my $500 for USC!

UCSD is def my first choice...so whoever is on the top of that alternate list, I know lots of people are planning on going to UCSD over USC

don't lose hope!

Thanks for posting.

This may not change things just yet as there is still one more interview session to go, but this is exactly why active consideration can have hope of acceptance. Believe it or not, USC isn't everyone's #1 choice.😕(😉)
:luck::luck:

Has anyone received March interview invitation yet? When will USC send out the interview invitation?:zip:

I felt like my interview went well. (feb23) It felt really laid-back and conversational for most of the time. The funniest question I got asked was, "If you were a drug, which one would you be and why?" I was cracking up on that one. Haha, anyways, I should have had more questions to ask.

Yea, I wish i had more questions too. I wasnt even asked any funky questions like you had. I was asked the basics, why usc, pos/neg of pharmacy, anything you want to tell us, etc. At the end when they were closing up the convo, they said, "oh we forgot to ask you, what are the challenges of pharmacy" I'm kind of worry it ended quite early. Guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

By the way, what was your answer to that question. It would have caught me offguard. I would be Valium, so I could be cool and calm all the time. 😎

Received an interview invitation (March 29th) via USPS today, postmarked February 29th. It's nice not having to wait for snail mail, *coughucsfcough*.

I received an interview invitation too.:banana::banana:

If you live near USC and havent' received an interview invitation as of today, does that mean you probably won't get one?

Can Farmercyst clarify the statement?

My answer was so embarrassing! I said "pitocin" because I felt like this whole pharm application process and waiting for acceptances was like being in labor. I wanted to "give birth" to it already!! Yep, they were laughing at that one.

haha. i'm a third year student at sc and was a student interviewer for 6 interviews already (not planning to do anymore this year unless there's any last minute cancellations). but believe it or not those "generic" questions really sets the students apart. no matter how well u think u r prepared and how perfect your answer is. to us, everyone is so distinct and we never have too much trouble telling apart who is the more serious one and who's a good candidate and may survive pharmacy school but not quite ready for pharm school yet. sometimes this not ready may not be because they are immature but we r just not convinced that they know they want to do pharmacy yet.

but when i interview i sometime throw in some weird question. although i don't do it to all 5 or 6 i interview. usually if u get a silly question from me i either think the interview is going very very well and i want to boost it one level higher or i think it's going so bad that i want to go side track and see if we can save it.

Actually, I really really like your answer. I think you did well. 😀

how do i get to the interview feedback section?

Not if it was postmarked on Friday. The way the postal service works delivery times will vary depending on how many distribution points you have to go through to get to you. When I was in Loma Linda, 70 miles from campus, the mail had to go from USC to LA distribution center to redlands distribution center to Loma Linda's primary post office to the Satelite office to my house. It took 4-5 days to get a letter from 70 miles away. I wouldn't sweat it too much yet if you haven't received one 2 days after they were mailed.

so my interview for January 26 was over, and I was at work last weekend. There were two pharmacists who graduated from USC recently asked me how my interview went. I told them I had Dr. Park. They pretty much said I was doomed and I was, active consideration. So if you have Dr. Park, beware, she's very strict but very straight forward.

I just got my interview invite for march 29. I got it thru regular first class mail, not priority like someone above. =P

Its postmarked 2/29 and I live in San Diego

Your letter will eventually come... so don't loose hope 👍

what time is your interview? I will be there too at 8:30am.
😀 See you there.

Does anyone know how the interview process goes for USC?
My letter says I have to get there at 8:30am. Is that means I have the interview starts exactly at 8:30am? Or there is an orientation first like other pharm school? Also, does anyone know how many people already get accepted? I am worried because I have not been accepted by any schools yet.

hey Jesheeka, misspharm, and others - congrats on getting your interviews!!!

so after waiting patiently for 5 months, getting rejected from UCSD and UCSF, and not hearing back from other schools, i somehow recieved an interview invitation for USC today! even though i'ts only an interview and not an acceptance, i'm just so grateful to even have the opportunity to interview there! i was so worried it wasn't going to happen bc of my subpar stats and applying late-ish. im ECSTATIC!! i will see you guys on the 29th at 11:30.

to those still waiting--don't give up yet! when there is still a chance there is hope!! Good luck to ALL!

You should be there a few minutes early like 10 minutes so. There will be information session in the beginning. mostly just talk about the interview + application process, not much about the school in general. Then you will have an interview with one faculty and one student at the same time. finally, you will to have read and summarize an article.

I forgot he said how many were accepted, but I think if you interview in March, the number will be different from people who interviewed previously.

good luck

Hey, the same thing happened to me! I got rejected by UCSF and UCSD early on, and I had completely given up on USC. I had also applied really late and my grades aren’t the best. I was SHOCKED to get the interview invitation! so, yes, there is definitely still hope! good luck!

Congrats! I think (since the jan interview) there are about ~100 seats offered (total...as in nov + jan interviews). Give or take ... depending on who says yes and who says no.

As for the last interview... they have not sent out their decisions yet.

For the students that have been offered interviews for march... would you please share your stats?

GOOD LUCK!

pharm cas C: 3.63
Pharmcas sci: 3.87
didn't take pcat.. only apply to california school.
i got an interview invitation on march 29. I don't know how many people got already accepted and number of seats availiable. if anyone know about this can you please post it. thanks

should i give up now if i haven't received an invite? i live on so cal.

Give it a couple more days. Who knows, maybe your envelope got stuck in the mail processing machinery. If you really can't wait that long, just call and ask. If you didn't get one, it won't matter how mad they get.🙄 If you did get one, then you can stop stressing and it still won't matter if they get mad cuz you'll feel better. (They won't get mad.🙂)

Hey, Farmercyst

don't you have a genetics quiz to be studying for???

Thanks shehsheh for updating us on the # ppl accepted. If USC accepts ~45-55 ppl from the 4th interview (as they did for the other interviews) and there are 100 interviewees... that means we have about 1/2 chance of getting in. Those are great odds guys!! we can do it!

my stats are nothing to brag about:
PharmCAS cum GPA: 3.2
sci GPA: 3.1

extracurric's: 1 year pharm tech, volunteer at Braille Institute, designed for undergrad newspaper, interned at Bay Area newspaper, 2 years assistant at optometry office, 3 months hospital pharmacy volunteer, 1 year research, ......

My academic record is disastrous--withdrawals, several grades under C-, I, leaves of absence--you name it, it's there. Even thou it's late in the game to say this, i just want to let others with blemishes on their transcripts know, don't stress too much and don't be too hard on yourself. You will have to work harder to prove it, but your potential can STILL shine thru in other ways!!

Well, I didn't even get an interview.. My stats are 3.65 overall and 3.4-3.5 pre-pharm. I gotta admit I procrastinated and didn't take the application process as seriously as I should have.

Good luck to everyone, and thanks for your help. I will re-apply for 2009..

my application is missing clinical experience as I was working full-time in a non-related career for a year and a half. Time to get that started. Also, I'm missing 2 bio pre-reqs..

anyone on the same boat as me?

How many paragraphs in the article?😕

Hey

How come 40-50 people are accepted from each interview pool if the first interview had 150 interviewees while jan, feb, march ones have 100 interviewees? Is it because more people will be accepted from 1st interview pool each time? But isn't this a lower probability of acceptance for the Nov. interviewees ? 😕 So not much advantage is given for those who applied earlier?

yea i dunno, i was one of those interviewees placed on active consideration from november and still waiting

My interview is at 10:25am on Sat March 29. So they are interviewing about 100 people? and accepting 45-50? Thats an awesome chance! 🙂

My stats are:
cGPA: 3.0
sGPA: 3.2
PCAT: 91 (not like it matters)
2 years pharm tech, 2 years volunteer at a free clinic

I know I don't have the best stats so people that don't have the best GPA and what not...don't give up hope.

I'm still waiting to hear back from UCSF too! aslkjdf;l this wait is killing me 🙁

Can I call to find out why I didn't get an interview?

Do they do a background check before interviews? I do have a misdemeanor from 4 years ago.. if they run that and pre-judge me..

I'm tripping out here.

I'd call. They make us do background checks the first month of school, so it seems unlikely they do it as part of the application process. If you indeed "did not take the application process as seriously as I should have" then that may have been your problem. As for GPA, mine was 3.59/3.49 (sci/cum) and I had no pharm experience either. I'm not sure what the difference was from last year to this year. My guess would be that it had something to do with either your application or supplemental, but I haven't seen either, so that's only a guess. I can't see how my med chem and pharm tech classes would have made the sole difference between you and I.
