USC Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi BMBiology, what can i sent in besides transcripts to impress the committee? thanks!

Anything that would improve your chances like leadership position, pharmacy experiences, recommendations. I would also send a letter saying USC is your top choice and keep them updated on your plans. It may only make a small difference but when it comes down to it, a small difference goes a long way.

Yeah it was, sadly. I was so disappointed, it felt like a rejection letter.

same here....

After being straight up rejected in '08 for "missing too many pre-reqs" and being indefinitely stuck on ucsd's waitlist, now I have to wait for an uncertain outcome.. Still keeping optimistic

Looking at last year's thread, it looks like most of those put on the active consideration list don't get in until march..

accepted. i just checked it couple hours ago. My first choice. Good luck to you all, and see you guys there! :luck:

p.s. don't get too discouraged. My interview did NOT go so well (they asked me "Why USC?" and i said "because USC is great...................yeah..." --- and they said "o... ok."), and I didn't get to finish the essay section, but they accepted me... so, yeah. You all can def. do it!

Wow congrats, you must have pretty impressive stats then huh?

I also got my acceptance on Saturday. It was surprising since I felt that the interviewers were interrogating me instead of getting to know me, and overall I didn't get a good impression of them on my interview. I might choose UOP over USC so maybe that'll leave a spot for one of you guys on hold. GOod lucK!

why do so many people put weight on how they were interviewed? Professors don't teach the same way they interview. I have a professor I really liked in class, but when I asked him for LOR he interviewed me a bit and he asked me lots of questions. I'm sure the LOR was really good since he used what I said, but if I went with how people here judge a person, I would have thought he was a bad professor.

I know you are supposed to judge a school by your experience there, but I hear about one group of interviewers being a bit serious and another group more nice and smiley in the same school. So people make a decision based on a 50/50 chance(for this example, but could be a different percentage depending on number of groups interviewed)?

I would try and contact multiple people who go to the school and get an overall impression as they have sat in many classes and can tell you if most of the professors there are really good or if they sort of wish they went somewhere else.

for the people that got accepted, did you guys all have 3.7 GPAs and up? that's what it seemed like from 2008.. I have been meticulously looking through the thread..

Wow. I really hope it was more than that. Or else I'm going to be annoyed with my classmates. Beside the point, this is not always the case. My friend was accepted two years ago with a 3.4-3.5. Although, it is true for me.

You can judge a school though. It all depends on your confidence. Most of the time, students fabricate questions they're not interested in for an interview. Or they're too nervous to give a school a critical question about the school. I guess I do recommend talking to students, but it's hard to ever see a paying student say something negative about their school.

I'm with you on that! I'm from TN, and yesterday I had the hardest time studying for my Biochem exam which I took this morning. Now, I'm having trouble studying for my humanities final. Grr... I really hope to get into USC. It's been my dream to attend that program since forever. haha. This waiting is too nerve-wracking.

I feel the same way about Oregon State. I don't really have hard feelings, it was my mess up, but I can't help but cheer against them in football every year. Glad they lost the civil war this year. :meanie:

For those of you who got accepted....What are your stats like??? Thanks!

my GPA was a 3.90.
i graduated in the spring of '08 with a biology major and a chemistry minor... i fell in love with OCHEM =)

I got in! USC is my top choice! I can't wait to meet everyone else who got in! Good luck to those who are on hold!

I got in!!😍 I finally turned my dream into a reality! I'm graduating this spring!

Congrats on those who got accepted! It is pretty tough to get accepted this early. From those who are still waiting, there are still a lot of opportunities.

I'm on the wait list. I think my GPA may have done it. It's not terrible for a neuroscience major, but it's definitely not a 3.9. Since it was a point-based system, I assume GPA was a big factor here.

Did anyone with under a 3.5 GPA get in this round?

I'M SPEECHLESS..... I thought I bombed the interview and the essay!!!! My prayers have been answered, an acceptance! Last cycle I got rejected to all six schools I applied to. This cycle, two waitlists and now an acceptance! PERSEVERANCE IS KEY EVERYONE!!!!

This is the best feeling I've had in a LOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG TIME!!!!!

CONGRATS EVERYONE and those who wait, have hope and DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!😍

Let me be the first to say, "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!" You deserve it. While I may be freezing up in Minnesota, you'll be living it up in SoCal.

I live in San Jose, and I received my acceptance letter today, yay! If you're further north, it may take another day or so. Good luck!

annoyed? that sounds kinda stuck up...

Congrats to everyone who already got in! As for me, active consideration. After reading some of the posts last year it seems like the people from last year who were AC basically didn't get in. Is that just me? If someone can prove me wrong that'd be fantastic. Oh well, hoping to hear good news from UoP this week and reaaaaaaaaally looking forward to UCSF and UCSD to begin their interviews!!!

Yeah, the people who get taken from active consideration make up only a small number of the new acceptances each cycle through March usually, and it's hard to say how many come from which month after January. I seem to recall 2 from AC last year in January, in the teens from February and tons after March. How many of those were from the 1st interview I don't think was ever clarified.

Edit: 7 people last year were accepted in January from active consideration. (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=6422692&postcount=635)

It's not really being stuck up to want a class of motivated pharmacy students versus a class of high scoring students. GPA is such a small reflection of a person, if it was purely numbers then the school doesn't do well to produce a strong or positive learning environment. I just happen to know USC does look into more than simply numbers. My statement shouldn't be condescending.

Hmmh. only 7 after january from last year...guess i shouldn't get my hopes up till march lol =\.

My hopes are pretty much down the drain! I know active consideration isn't a rejection but it sure feels like it.

Oh I see what you were saying now. You meant more than that as in other parts of the applicant's file rather than saying a GPA much higher than 3.7.

I totally agree with you as book smarts don't necessarily make up an applicant.. I also think USC does a better job than most schools for picking a strong, well-rounded class from what I have seen.

did anyone below a 3.5 get accepted and what was your GPA according to USC? It would definitely have to be above a 3.2 because that is the cut-off for atleast being considered for an interview. So anyone?

=) thanks!

O wow. I read my post several times and I didn't get where the attitude was coming from. Now I can totally read it the way both of you seemed to. I guess I should've said: "Wow. I hope there was more to it than that." 🙁 In my defense, too many applicants worry about stats in pre-pharmacy that they ignore the fact they had a list of activities and experiences to write about in the application.

It's much easier to ask for GPA on a forum then asking students to list their ECs. 🙂 - and GPA probably makes up the bulk of their ranking system. I was just trying to see where I was at in terms of GPA. At first, I thought you meant you wanted to go to school with classmates who had near perfect GPAs, and I was like 😕 I'm just on the frustrated/nervous side as usc is my top choice, and this is my 2nd time applying. :xf:

I have a bunch of ECs/work experience but only few of them relate to pharmacy directly.

Yeah. No, no. I don't mean that. I do, however, believe that a lot of people think that way. I'd be pretty peeved that all i needed was a decent GPA to get into pharmacy school. 😛 That line of thinking kinda undermines everything that you were trying to prove outside of school.

USC class of 2013!!!!! So excited I got my acceptance on Monday. I cant wait to meet everyone. Hope you guys are down to have fun too. lol.

congrats to everyone that got accepted, I just got my lack letter today...guess i will be in the march interview group ><..

How long did you wait for interview after receiving the lack letter?

How long did you wait for interview after receiving the lack letter?

It doesn't work that way anymore. Now that all apps are in and 3 more dates are to be assigned. You will get your interview date about 2-3 weeks prior to the interview. It comes out in waves, probably based on the completion of your application.

For those of you wondering about other students and their respective GPA, don't trip out over that. If you keep asking "what is your GPA?" and wondering if you will get in solely off grades, you're not approaching the application process in the right way. Of course, that's not to say that grades DON'T matter, but the word "overall" is key here.

If it's true that someone got in (earlier in the decision process) right now with a GPA < 3.5, that's a great example of how other aspects of an application can compensate for a "lower" GPA.

Last year, I got in with a GPA < 3.5, but at the very end of the matriculation cycle. (Another reason NOT to wait when submitting your supplementals to a rolling admit school.)
