Hey guys,
I was super active on SDN last year, during my application cycle; the result of spending way tooooooo much time sitting in front of a computer at work with nothing to do. Well, I wanted to give back to the SDN community because some cool keck students helped me out during my painful application cycle.

If you guys have any questions about the Keck experience, try asking, and I'll try to help out, but note that I have only been at Keck for one and a half months. I am not too knowledgeable about the behind-the-scenes-admissions stuff, but if you have questions about clinical experience, curriculum, faculty, etc., I think I might be able to help out. I know I have some classmates that would most likely be down to help out too.

Well here's my SDN good member act,

How's the housing around there? Is the neighborhood good?

Only a small number of students either live in the dorms or in the direct neighborhood. Most students commute to school from neighborhoods that range from 5 to 30 mins away, with some students commuting from even further parts of Los Angeles. A lot of students live in Monterey Hills, South Pasadena, Alhambra, Pasadena, Los Feliz, and Downtown LA, a broad range of different environments, ranging from suburban to down right urban.

Thanks for offering your advice. I was wondering what you think of the new curriculum. A Pepperdine alum just graduated from there and I asked him about it, he said that all he knew is that initially there was a lot of complaining about being the guinea pigs, etc., but because it came after him he didn't really know. I guess you are just starting there but I am sure you have an idea of what people think of it. Besides that, has anything about USC (or just med school in general) so far surprised you, good or bad?

Do you know much about the MD/MPH curriculum and opportunities to take electives or spend summers on abroad programs?

As for the new curriculum, I don't have much of a point of reference because I never experienced the old curriculum. My understanding is that one of the main differences is that the new curriculum is organ based, unlike the old curriculum that was traditional, or subject based e.g. physiology, pathology, biochem, anatomy, etc.

The first semester of the first year is kinda set up like the old curriculum in that we are doing a subject based schedule that sorta acts like a foundation for the later organ based systems. It's called core principles. So, we haven't really gotten to the new curriculum yet(they are trying to stop calling it new, 'cuz it's the fourth year that it has been in place).

One thing that I have been surprised about is how awesome our faculty is at USC. I can't really speak for other medical schools 'cuz I don't know how their faculty is (med students feel free to comment), but ours has been really great. They are all so accesible, spend so much time with us, really care, and most of them are just really good teachers. It's like night and day from undergrad.

Hope this helps,

I am sorry, I really don't. I have heard about some really awesome things that MSIIs did over last summer, but I have also heard about awesome things that students from other schools did too. I am pretty sure that you can set up awesome electives and abroad programs at any med school, but I might be mistaken. I can say that there is a ton of really cool community service opportunities at USC

Damn, I had no idea that this new USC info service would be so prompt. Thanks for the help.

i am pretty intrested in usc. do you mind if i ask what your stats were?

I have a question about the 30 credits of humanities/english/social science requirement. Can foreign language be included in this? How about AP credits?
