Hi,
I am an entering freshman at an university. I am starting in Fall 2009 and am majoring in Political Science. I am very interested in healthcare law and Bioethics. I would also like to pursue a PharmD. I am wondering what the best way is to prepare for this? Any tips? I know that the application process starts fairly early, especially since I am considering one of these dual degree programs. I am starting off with 12 credits the first quarter just to get adjusted to the schedule. I plan on upping it to 16 once I become comfortable. I am meeting with an advisor sometime in the fall but I want to go into the meeting having some knowledge which is why I am posting here. I have a some questions.

1. I am crazy? Is the PharmD/JD program worth doing?
2. Can I take the pre-reqs for Pharmacy School during two years of my undergraduate schooling?
3. Do all Pharmacy Schools have the same prereqs?
4. How long does a program like this actually take? Is it 7 years? (4 years pharm, 4 years law?)
5. Are there any other schools that offer this kind of program? USC would be ideal because I am from Los Angeles but it would be nice to have other options.

Anything else that you can provide me with, I appreciate.

1. Yes, you're crazy, but that's okay.
2. You'll need no less than 3 years of undergrad training, and that's if you're at USC and in the TAP program. Otherwise you'll need a 4 yr degree just to get into the PharmD program. Yes you'll complete the prereqs during that time.
3. No, the prereqs aren't the same if you apply do different schools of pharmacy you'll have to meet the different prereqs of each school (though most overlap, not all do)
4. Typically it's 4 years to get into USC, 4 years for PharmD, not sure how JD works. With PharmD/MBA it's 5 years (1 yr Pharm, 1 yr MBA, 3 years Pharm= PharmD/MBA). PharmD/MPH or PharmD/MRegSci is 4 years (summers are for MPH or RegSci requirements), PharmD/PhD is typically 7, but I've heard can be done in 6 or 8 depending on thesis/concentration.
5. For more info on USCs dual degree programs contact Jim Granderson's office(school directory available at USC.edu/pharmacy), he may refer you to the Dual degree coordinator.

Farmer, you know an awful lot about USC specifically. I really hope I pull you for the interview in November! (Crossing los dedos!)

When you wait til the last possible second to choose any given path, you learn a lot about a whole lot of different alternatives. So yeah, when I got to USC I looked to see requirements of a few of the dual degree programs that interested me, even though I didn't end up applying to any of them.
I hope to learn a lot more about PHS, Air Force, IHS, VA, and Pediatric Pharmacy in the next 18 months. Loan repayment and other incentives will be key factors. I'll also be registering for peds pharmacy electives to see if it's really what I want to do and the difference in incentive programs should I choose that path. I'll probably look a little into Nuclear as well as you never know where pharmacy will take you.

Oh, and OP you'll want to ask which dual degree programs require Grad School tests. I believe JD may (probably does) require LSAT scores.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that no one has tried/completed the PharmD/JD at USC yet.
