Uscap 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Conclusion 1: You only need one abstract accepted to get a expenses-paid trip to the meeting.
Conclusion 2: # of abstracts accepted inversely correlates with partytime at conference (only being half serious here but you get the point...)

no dude, you the hit the nail on the head with #2. I'm fine with the way things turned out. Much rather do a platform than a poster...latter you gotta stand there for what seems like FOREVER. Plattie: you're done in 10-15 mins and can bolt.

Now, for the more serious and relevant USCAP question...
what's denver like? ski season still good in march 1-7 timeframe? what's the night life? clubs/bars/nightclubs?? (god I wish USCAP would book one year in vegas...i'd literally devote myself to submitting as many abstracts as humanly possible)

:hardy:

Ski season is mostly over by the 16th of April. You might get some choppy snow but it is an experience to go skiing in a bathing suit. 😱 If you really want to experience the night life, rent a car and "skinny" on up to Boulder. That place hardly ever sleeps. I'm not too familiar with official Denver hangouts... I defer to the CU medical staff....

...more due to the thumping bass of undergrad parties than say, slot machines.

Don't get me wrong, I like Boulder. An oasis of watered green in the middle of parched grassland!

Hey now, don't go dissin' my homeland. You only have to bypass the nuclear power plant and a couple three legged birds to get to Boulder. It's an arid environment!! That's why the grass is dead!

I heard the airport is really far from downtown... and it seems there's a shuttle less expensive than cab.

Do you guys know anything about it? 😕

Do you think I can manage to find a shuttle when getting there or should I book in advance (I'll get there saturday around 11 pm - if no flight delays... etc)?

Thanks

I think it's the same type of shuttle they have in many cities, although I may be wrong. Last two conferences I have been in (Baltimore and Houston) had something called the "super shuttle" which you could either book ahead of time or just show up at the airport, and you could book the day before you had to leave. It wasn't a direct trip to the airport, it would stop at other hotels, but did save some money. Don't know if it runs at 11pm though. You might be stuck.

Hope everybody enjoys USCAP if you come. There is a housestaff session on sunday night which is about jobs, there will be some salary data, info about getting into private practice, etc.

Thank you Yaah.

Do you know how can I book this "super shuttle" or get more information about it? Sorry.. this is my first USCAP 😳.
I'm gonna ask other residents as well...

From the USCAP website:

Airport Shuttle Service
SuperShuttle is offering a discounted rate of $30 round trip per person to USCAP meeting attendees. To access the coupon please click on the following link: http://www.supershuttle.com/Coupons/DIA/USCAP.pdf. Although reservations are not needed from the airport to the hotels, you will need one for your return trip to the airport. To book your reservation and prepay online, please visit their website at http://www.supershuttle.com/default.aspx?GC=BWYBT. Our group code, BWYBT is already entered on the site.

From what I can see, this is the only reasonable option. It says that cab fare is 45 dollars one way, which comes out to 90 dollars round trip. When you consider that hotel parking is 20 dollars plus per night plus the car rental costs, the only cost-effective way to get to the hotel is by the crappy shuttle. My program said no way to letting me have a rental car for a week as the cost was absolutely ridiculous.

Bingo! Now I remember reading this on the USCAP website long time ago... 😳

Thanks Pingu!

I just included cab fare in the cost estimate I submitted to the dept.

I did too, but since I am staying 7 nights and the hotel per night cost is not cheap, they started to balk at the cost of my trip. So our budget people used the cheapest transportation option to finesse the budget 🙄 and thus I am shuttle bound.😱😱😱

7 nights? I'm surprised the dept would willingly pay for that. Here they will pay for us to go to the conference but if my presentation was monday and I asked to stay until thursday or friday I think I might get some resistance.

I grew up in CO/and went to med school in Denver. The airport is far... but there are shuttles as has been said that run around 15-20 each way. Not sure how 30 r/t is a discount. If you're staying in the Hyatt Convention Center hotel I would call them to see if they have a shuttle... a lot of the downtown hotels do knowing that the airport is basically in western Kansas. The public transit there (RTD) has a bus that runs every hour for 8.00 each way to Market Street Sation downtown at which point you can take the free Mall Ride shuttle to the block that any downtown hotel is on intersecting 16th and then walk to where you're staying, (if you're at the Hyatt it's a 2 block walk with your luggage). That's pretty much what I do every time I go.. but then usually when I go I'm not paying.

Thanks Giovoni! Good idea.. I'm gonna call the hotel to check!

Depending on my luggage size and the weather, I would walk the 2 blocks... but for nothing I will if temperatures fall below 32.

Wow I hadn't even thought of how far Hyatt was from the airport. Oh well...I'm getting in late on Saturday anyway so I suppose I'll have to deal with riding a cab. Plus, there's gonna be plenty of riding cabs in the evenings during USCAP.

I'd still try for the shuttle. I think it runs 24 hours, but I'm not sure. I've had some bad experiences with crazy cab drivers driving me all over a city, even when I've been to the city before and I know they are trying to run up the fare.

Hey, we're in the same boat! It seems the supershuttle is 24 hr and a reservation is not necessary.

Get your coupon on the uscap website... I've printed that out, just in case.

Oh, I didn't know about a coupon. I'll check out the USCAP site and see if I can find it. Thanks for the tip.

Surfacing for breath.. aahh...~

Yes, SuperShuttle is 24/7 (as most external fellowship applicants would know 😉 ). They do however do this thing where they make you wait to be picked up 2 1/2 hours in advance of your flight. This sucks if your flight is at 7am, for instance - particularly with the trend towards increasing flight delays.

What I've done is basically lie about my flight time on the online reservation system and plan to get there 1 hour early (with no checked bags). Probably wouldn't advise that for rush-hour travel though.

btw what I really want to know is... which winter coat are you packing? 🙂

Re: the meeting itself - it's kinda late, but if you're interested you might try to make it to the CAP residents' forum on Saturday. Lots of practical community practice related stuff.
http://residents.cap.org/ has more info, and an agenda book.

I don't think enough residents take advantage of the weekend stuff at USCAP, since everything is basically free (companion societies) or resident oriented (from USCAP and CAP and ASCP).

FYI, the Hyatt website says supershuttle only runs from 6am-midnight. So confirm that if you potentially could run into time constraints.

anybody have any idea how long it was realistically take by supershuttle from airport to the hyatt on a sunday? you think the van will be filled with folks going to the hyatt (i.e. special uscap trip) or will have to make a bunch o'stops at other places first...

Generally how supershuttles work is that they go to a bunch of hotels in a similar area, so it doesn't add tons of time to the trip. But it's hard to say how much. Same with the return trip - I took one in Baltimore and we stopped at 4 hotels before going to the airport.

I took the SuperShuttle Friday night from the airport to the Hyatt area, and there were about 10 of us passengers crammed into the van, all going to different locations. Took about an hour 15 to get me to the hotel.

SDN is having a really strong showing at USCAP! 🙂
Props to Pingu for tracking me down (I could not help sneaking a peek at her shoes) - I also had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Remick in person!

If you haven't already signed up for the CAP Residents Online Community, it's based on the same vBulletin software as SDN. Check it out if you're a CAP Junior Member - I'm sure most if not all of us are. I do believe the CAP Residents Forum is the best connected and most powerful lobby in terms of representing resident interests, so I highly recommend voicing issues, grouses and suggestions in that forum as well as on SDN.

I'll try to post a summary of the Saturday meeting once I get back to home base.

Twas a nice meeting. it was great seeing some of u again and catching up. i was actually surprised to have unexpectedly run into old friends and acquaintances i hadnt seen since the med school days. hope everyone has a safe trip back.

I would love to put a face to some of the names. I may have even talked to some of you without realizing it.

Did anyone check out the 27th floor of the hyatt? pretty cool bar with a nice view of the mountains. the only bad thing, or perhaps a good thing, is all the money they sucked outta me!

If you were at the resident's forum, you probably met or saw me. I'm actually still here, as I have my T-cell short course tomorrow morning.

What is that forum like? is it like a more toned down version of sdn? what was discussed this time around? I pondered joining but was warned that there is a lot of lip service and pc talk. but that may be wrong. plus, im dont have a politician mentality. but i would be interested to hear what was accomplished at this years congregation.

I enjoyed USCAP this year, was there for a long time (sat - thursday). Got kind of burned out near the end. I oftentimes found myself wondering if someone I was talking to also had an online persona. A couple of people outed themselves to me, which I enjoyed. I did not, however, meet pingu and see the shoes. At least, I don't think I did.

The other thing I continue to learn is that there are a surprising number of well known/famous pathologists who are kind of jerks! But sadly, one way you can partially become successful these days is to be a jerk. The other side of the coin, though, is that there are some big names who are incredible people.

I am sure glad I did not decide to do breast path though. Every other oral abstract was contentious.

I pondered joining the other forum too. Actually, I think I did join, but one forum is enough for me these days and I often forget about the other one.

Hmm, people outed themselves to you and you enjoyed it? interesting. j/k chief i didnt get to meet pingu either...the rave about her shoes will continue to be a mystery to me. as for yaah, did you become shorter? or maybe i got taller. hmm.

I will definitely be in San Diego in September.

Maybe we should have a informal SDN path get together there :hardy:

To borrow a quote from Tina Fey... at USCAP I'm a model.

Did you leave all your caps back in Denver? Or are you simply getting over the massive hangover?

I never made it to the 27th floor. My money was spent on Sushi Han and La Fondue.
I really enjoyed the stainless steel hot tub and lap pool though!

Sorry, what's in San Diego in September?

The main CAP meet. Unfortunately because of hotel scheduling issues, I think the Residents Forum takes place on Wednesday instead of Saturday.

I hung up my USCAP '08 bag next to my USCAP '07 bag and resolved to stop collecting them.

I brought my USCAP 2007 bag with me as a carryon, then when I got the new one I threw the 2007 bag in the trash. Handy!
Ah - see, I'm Asian and my conscience will not allow me to do that. Whether Made In China or otherwise. 😉

I saw a Hyatt housekeeping cart with a USCAP bag perched safely on the top. Maybe it was yours? 😛

I left my USCAP '08 bag next to the trash can in my hotel room in case housekeeping wanted it. I, too, could not in good conscience throw something perfectly good away. I wasn't at the Hyatt though, so that one perched on the cart wasn't mine.

A few years ago, after became overloaded with inexpensive bags advertising the previous meeting, I stopped collecting them. The majority are tossed within a few months of the meeting, and they appear to be needlessly increasing the carbon footprint.

Now I ask for the bag, take out the relevant information, such as the program book, and hand the bag back to the nice but somewhat confused staff. They are informed that I have everything that I need, but some items are missing from the bag that I just returned.

Could always donate them to Goodwill / Salvation Army / your local school, for a kid who can't afford a backpack or something. Maybe it'll inspire him/her to stay in school to one day become a pathologist and attend USCAP...

At least it would keep it out of the landfill... 🙂

I used to collect the bags from different meetings (ASIP, AACR, etc.). Had a whole bunch. Placed all of them in the free box at a tag sale. The box cleared out in 5 minutes.

They should come up with a better "gift" at these meetings. Something we could use ...... like a filter that removes trace pharmaceuticals from our drinking water.

Or a distillation system, to assist us in repurifying these pharmaceuticals for sale on the open market or personal use! Should be a part of any national healthcare plan... distill your own meds from your tap water! Profit! 🙂

I wonder about the quality of the bag though. I know someone who used it to hold their fellowship application material (I forget if a laptop was sometimes carried) and it lasted oh, I want to say half to 3/4s of last year before developing a big rip.
