That was the highlight of my day.
And now we wait.
Said the lady nephrologist who had observed the wild email/phone exchanges taking place late afternoon - "You're going to get accepted, and you're going, right?"
Me: "I'm not even sure! I'm going to be on my Surgery rotation at the time - God knows if they'll let me go."
LN: "Don't let silly rules get in the way of an academic career. Develop explosive diarrhea the week of the meeting - they'll never want you in the OR. Plus, San Antonio in February, versus standing in an OR all day..." *looks pointedly at me*

The pathologist in whose lab I'm doing a bit of research this month and next month said he submitted an abstract for some of the stuff I'm doing. He says if there are med school funds for students to attend conferences, I would be able to attend. Of course, I should be all done with interviews by that point so hopefully I'll be able to go. Fingers crossed.

OK deschutes, your job as a surgery clerk consists of two things: writing terse progress notes and retracting during surgery. Both can get done in your absence. Notes are easy to write (LGFD...D/C today). Regarding retracting, they really don't need you for that either. When I would leave to go to "2 pm lecture", my retracting would be replaced by a piece of tape. That's how useless I was.
Go to the conference. no offense, but on surgery, you won't be missed. Go...hang out...find some nice vietnamese restaurant...drink more bubble tea.
I presented a poster last year. It was fun.
But the CAP meeting was better. I will write up a summary of that meeting soon. CAP is the meeting to go to if you are interested in private practice.

Andy - I will move mountains to go if our abstract is accepted! We'll see. I imagine there are things cooler than even bubble tea, in San Antonio.

It's the Great Pumpkin! The CAP meeting was fun. Too bad I didn't get to talk to you... just spotted you from across the room one time. CAP's also a great chance to meet other residents and compare notes on programs, especially if you join the residents forum. 👍

I agree, it is exciting (in a geeky way) to see the big names in path (mostly surg path).
While I was at the meeting this year, I bought the new Ackerman and had it signed by Rosai himself (ooh, aah!)
I went to the Vancouver mtg earlier this year - what a beautiful city!

Bah...no San Antonio for me as I found out a few days ago...we decided not to submit an abstract after all since a lot of our data is very preliminary. It looks like I'll be submitting an abstract for the Anaheim meeting in April.

Yeah I think the November deadline may be a stretch for me but that's like more than a month away so I'll go for it.
I'm already trying to make plans to go to the 2004 ASCB meeting (due to nostalgia from my PhD years) yet I have no abstract. Luckily, I got friends and family in the area so I can crash there....all I would have to pay for is registration so that I can just get a name tag and have entry into the convention center.
Just got the letter today. 🙂
