Hey,
It doesn't look like there's a thread for the USF One Year Master's Program, specifically, so I thought I might create one for anyone who is applying to the program to communicate with fellow applicants.

I submitted by primary not too long ago for the Pharmacology concentration and received confirmation the next day. Now I am waiting til June 1st to submit the secondary. Anyone else aboard?

Yep, I'm applying for the Molecular Med program. My application is being transferred from the IMS program over to the graduate schcool.

I would have applied to IMS if it weren't for the strict deadlines for the MCAT...

You can only have an application submitted for one concentration at a time, right? I remember reading somewhere that "multiple applications will NOT be accepted.

Yeah, you can only apply to one concentration. Anyways the office just finished up with graduation stuff, so I heard they will be reviewing applications soon!

This is great news! I pretty much have everything in order for June 1st, just waiting to complete LORs and the PS.

Are you applying to any other schools at the moment for post-bacc?

Yeah, you can only apply to one concentration. Anyways the office just finished up with graduation stuff, so I heard they will be reviewing applications soon!

So, for the primary app: the official scores are sent through the email, correct? (They take are information and plug it into the AAMC score retrieval feature, and voila).
And for the secondary, I am confused about what they want as far as unofficial MCAT scores: "Although a score must be indicated on the program app (I already did that part), an actual paper copy of the score report is not mandatory (????)." This sounds like a contradiction in that it is listed as an item that must be included in the secondary package.

I'm nearly set to send my secondary application sans LORs (via Interfolio). Has anybody heard an update from USF?

Finally submitted my secondary...took way longer than I expected to finish my personal statement. That was perhaps the most brutal essay I have written.

I feel as though this is sort of my journal, ha.

Does anybody know when acceptances usually start to come in for the programs? Thanks.

Hello all! I applied to the Anatomy concentration and Im just waiting to hear from the admissions office...I know the last day for secondary apps was the 30th but I am so anxious!

I have to relocate and find an apt so I was wondering if anyone knows how early we should get contacted if accepted? It states on the website decisions will be on the site Aug. 1st but I really hope I know something before that.:xf:

A little while ago there was a link to last year's application statuses. The Anatomy and MM concentrations were stuffed with applicants, whereas Pharmacology had ~15, so it's definitely going to be a significantly smaller crowd than the rest of the concentrations.

I applied to the pharmacology concentration as well. It says the admission averages are 3.2 (overall?) GPA 22 MCAT 1050 GRE. but nothing about how many students are accepted. the primary app deadline was originally 3/15 but was extended to 6/1 so maybe too few were applying...sounds promising for those of us who did apply.

Just praying my application works out 🙂

Also, an admissions officer told me last wednesday that they hope to have decisions done within two weeks.

I am an anthro BA major also from Los Angeles. where u from?

Anybody else get an email from the Director of the Women's Health concentration? I thought it was going to be an email acceptance for my concentration but nope... women's health. I didn't sign up for that. Got my hopes up for nothing.

...yep..i got excited and everything!! but nada..

Im here at work like, omg omg omg..finally the email! oh well i guess the wait continues 🙂

Omg!! I was accepted to the molecular medicine program this morning.
I got the email and had to call the office bc the email wasn't really specific.

I'm def moving to Tampa by aug 10th for orientation.
I'm from Ohio, sent in my secondary app June 9th.
sooooooo excited to begin hard work.

Congratulations!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

I can uncross my fingers now... I got in!! Just looked at the Graduate Admissions Status page. Can't wait to get started!! 😀

Congrats to both of you!
Now I just need to figure out where to live.

I also got the non specific email from USF, which mentioned orientation and such. I applied to the Molecular Medicine program. Anybody know much about how good this program is for gaining acceptance to medical school?

Congrats to all! I got the Womans Health email today.. definitely got me excited for a min even though I read about it here first lol.

hey i got into the molecular medicine concentration...anyone else have more info about it....o yea and congrats to all who have got into the programs...

Hey, I don't know if you've taken a gander at the New Student Checklist, but at the bottom of it there is a list of housing options. It seems as though a lot of them are 'tres riche.' I've been looking at hotpads.com. It integrates apartment listings with an interactive map, so you can see the entire lot of available spaces in the Tampa Bay area.

Congrats to both of you!

Yes, I did checkout those apartments on the checklist. I think so far the best deals are the suite style living in monticello and the pointe @ south fl.
Idk I'll keep looking. Make sure you are looking at safe neighborhoods.

I'm female looking for a roommate/s. Pm if u r interested

Since these SMP's are pretty expensive. Mind if I ask how everyone plans to pay for them? And if your planning on taking out loans, are you guys worried about hitting the Federal Loan cap? I'm applying to SMP's for next summer, and I don't know if it would be financially worth it.

Thanks for the speedy reply! I am a Fl resident, living in Fort Lauderdale. I was looking into the SMP's only because it was highly recommended by Med Admission faculty. I have a 3.32 cGPA with a 21 MCAT. I'm not too sure which route I should go... If I should do the 1yr program or an SMP; just trying to work my way into a US med school.

Yea I plan on studying for the MCAT on my own this fall and taking a Princeton Review course come Jan so I can take the exam in April. It seems as though I have a decision to make... I was previously accepted to an MS program in Exercise Science (I already graduated with a BS in exercise science). The program is offering a TA position so I will have the chance to go to school for free, and will have the possibility of publishing a research paper. The program, however, does not offer any medical school courses and does not resemble an smp. Just not sure which would be in my nbest interest. Thanks for all the advice gujudoc.

Neither are the other programs at USF SMPs either. I would go with neither and go out of state for an SMP post getting MCAT scores. Maybe one of the boston programs or RFU or somewhere which hasn't had a deadline pass or somewhere you could use GRE scores to get in and then take the mcat.

I originally thought the only 2 schools with SMP programs in FL were USF and Barry. Now, nothing against Barry, but it doesn't have a medical school; so I would assume their matriculation rates wouldn't be as high as lets say another SMP with a Med School linked to it. I thought the IMS program at USF was an SMP. You would go for an OOS SMP? Wouldn't you be worried about reaching the Federal loan cap following admittance into Medical School?

Also, what about a Postbac?

thanks Guju!
Looks like I have more research to do. Seems like I be paying about $750 for a 1 bedroom.
Are there any areas that we should stay away from

Hey, I'm in the IMS program now. PM me for specific questions although I don't know too much as of right now since everything has changed this year. But specifically for money purposes you will get up to (or should get up to) the $20k limit for federal loans. Beyond that is PLUS loans which is varies by student for the remainder of your program (I'm pretty sure the others are the same cost as IMS which would be ~$4k).

If you're having trouble getting to the Student Health Services webpage because the link in the New Student Checklist didn't work (like me), delete the shsweb and add www instead. The link worked after I did that.

Just got my acceptance letter today!!! I'm so pumped!!!!!!! Can't wait to meet all of you. I live a couple minutes from USF so if you need some info on apartments/food/whatever let me know.

thanks Guju!

I live in Tampa, and you should stay away from anything west of Bruce B Downs for sure. Very sketchy area with high crime. The campus of USF sits in between this area and a nicer corridor east of campus. Directly north of campus isn't a bad area- its chock full of student housing. Lots of undergrads though, so I'm not sure how the noise/party situation is.

Where is everybody thinking of living come the Fall? It'd be great to have some fellow MS neighbors.

I'm looking in 'on 50' if I can find a room mate. But If I have to live alone then idk yet.

Where are you considering?

I live at "Fisherman's Landing," which is at Fowler and 75, about 5 miles from school. The complex isn't the newest (built in the late 80's) but is clean and mostly quiet. There is new management that has put lots of money into much needed upgrades/maintenance lately. Rent is reasonable. My roommate and I have a 2 bed 2 bath and about 1,000 Sq. ft. for $840/mo, water included. Each unit has a screened in porch/balcony. It's about 5 minutes from grocery shopping and restaurants. Parking sucks though, and the parking lot tends to flood. Overall not too bad, but its not luxury living.

I'm still looking at places... trying to avoid moving back home! Has anybody tried registering for classes? Specifically for Pharmacology classmates, I don't see a Principles of Pharmacology and Therapeutics or that Biostatistics course.

I can't find the classes I'm supposed to be registered for in Molecular Med either.. anyone know what we're supposed to do? I called them but no one answered.. as usual.

An email was sent to the molecular medicine ppl.
The email had an attachment of all the required classes and the elective classes too and the syllabi

If u want me to foreword it to you I can. Just pm me your email address

Hey, you might want to email Dr. Keller, the advisor for the MM concentration.

I can't find the classes I'm supposed to be registered for in Molecular Med either.. anyone know what we're supposed to do? I called them but no one answered.. as usual.

Hey guju, I'm actually about to start the MS program for Pharmacology, but thanks for catching my mistake. I must have downloaded an older version of the New Student checklist before they sent a new one out for this year.. Dr. Ingrid Bahner appears to be taking Dr. Keller's position as MM advisor. Thanks again!👍

And for those PHARM students having trouble registering for classes as the moment, are you seeing Permit Required under the Status column? I tried registering for GMS 6513 and PHC 6050 but both are Permit restricted... bummer.

I thought Dr. Keller is no longer at USF med and has since retired. I've heard from a classmate who was with me in Molecular Med and whom just got into USF med like some days ago off the waitlist that Dr. Keller is no longer with USF and has retired.

Are you sure he is still advising Molecular Med like he was when we were in the program?

If you can't find PHC 6050, try going under the "Epidemiology and Biostatistics" part of the Public health college within the Course Schedule Search database...it should be the second one, since Judith Reiter sent out the email saying it was going to be an online course. The first one is on-campus and I'm assuming that is strictly for MPH students and the like.

But like I said in the above post, it doesn't seem to be allowing me to register for it due to needed "Permits." I email Judith about this, so I will share her response when I receive it.

Guju, do you know anything about Permit restrictions during registration? I'm not even confident that the courses listed as "web registered" even mean that I am registered for them at all yet. I hate getting familiar with new quirky systems...🙄

hey guys,

congrats to all who've gotten in! just found out i was accepted last week and am going to Tampa to look at apartments... anyone out there still need a female roomie? if so, PM me pls! 🙂

also there's a FB group started for our year... i checked out last year's group and it seems like a pretty good way to communicate with each other.

see you all in a few weeks!

I'm having a lot of trouble registering for classes. The link on the student checklist doesn't work. Help!

Kathy Zahn just got back from vacation, so you might want to send her an email concerning registration. I'm going to email her as well, as I am unsure that the classes that appear as "web registered" are definite or not...I tried reserving textbooks when logged into Oasis and it rejected me because it said I wasn't registered for any classes. Blackboard said the same thing..not currently registered for any classes. 😕

I would assume if it says web registered, that just means you registered for the class online versus having an advisor or someone else register you for a class (which they can do if a class is already full etc.)

To reserve textbooks be sure to select Health Science Center as your campus. If you select the Tampa campus, it'll say that you aren't registered for any classes.

Hope that helps.

Do any of you know anything about financial aid/loans? Did any of you receive an award letter yet?
