USF One Year Master's Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do any of you know anything about financial aid/loans? Did any of you receive an award letter yet?

I received an award letter 3 days after I was accepted. All federal loans (20k). It basically covers tuition and fees and books. I assume we need to apply for grad plus loans independently through the FInancial aid office.

For those buying books,it's waaaayyyy cheaper on amazon. Free amazon prime (2day shipping) too

Yup, that fixed everything. Thanks! 👍

I would assume if it says web registered, that just means you registered for the class online versus having an advisor or someone else register you for a class (which they can do if a class is already full etc.)

To reserve textbooks be sure to select Health Science Center as your campus. If you select the Tampa campus, it'll say that you aren't registered for any classes.

Hope that helps.

yeah I'm planning on going to the orientation on August 17

I plan on attending as well. I want to get a feel for the COM area, as USF's campus is far more spread out and divided than UF's. Plus I want to meet my fellow classmates!

I'm attending too! Def not going to the main graduate school orientation on the 10th though. And yayyy I'm a Gator too lol!

Did anyone get a response from Kathy Zahn after requesting the student ID? I emailed her a couple days ago and haven't heard anything.

I thought you get a student ID really early in the process. Did you never receive one from USF after submitting your primary to facts.org? I'm not really sure how to help, sorry...

Oops, guess I read the checklist wrong. Yes, I have my ID number already, I was thinking about the actual ID card. I'm not sure what I thought the connection was between emailing Kathy and getting an ID card.

Oh ok.. You're all set then?

Taking the MCAT at 1pm today...bleh.

It was my second attempt... a lot of my fellow 8/5/2010 test takers are concerned about how iffy they all feel...All I know is that I sucked at verbal on the first attempt.. Got a 6.. but I feel confident that I got between an 8-10 this time. I also believe my writing score improved, as I didn't even finish one of the essays on the first MCAT. I finished both this time and the topics were pretty easy. I'm crossing my fingers!!
I hope it went well for you! Was this the first time you took it?

I think I'm going to try an start a Pharmacology page or group on facebook... Be on the look out. Perhaps even a general Medical Sciences group?

Hi,

Did anyone secure housing yet? I'm looking into St. Croix, Willow Brooke, University Club Apartments, and The Park at Coventry. I'm new to Florida, so I can't start looking until a week before classes. Also, does anyone know if it's possible to finish the Molecular Medicine program in 2 semesters - Fall and Spring instead of 3 semesters - Fall, Spring, Summer?

From the checklist:

If your registration is blocked due to permit restrictions, you may contact Kathy Zahn ([email protected]) or Fey Carreras ([email protected]). Be sure to keep your email simple.

With “Permit Request” in the subject area, email the following:

Full Name
Student ID Uxx-xxx-xxxx
Course Name
Course Reference Number (CRN)

That's not how you do it for classes outside our college, I.e. PHC 6050. Go to the CoPH website and follow the instructions for registration... I can't remember off the top of my hewe but I clicked on a tab and selected from a droplist. There is a form you need to fill out for your Permit Request and send in to the CoPH.

I'm just getting back from a cruise... Were literally docking in Tampa at the moment. I'll give specifics when I get off.

Hey, if you're still having trouble finding the permit request, follow this link:
http://health.usf.edu/publichealth/academicaffairs/registration/pdf/Degree-Seeking_Fall2010.pdf

You don't have to fill out the 'College of Public Health Students' section, but you do fill out the 'Non College of Public Health Students' section. You don't even need the Advisor Signature, just fill out the course info under the 'Registration For Courses' section.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone been able to register for PHC 6050? It still says 'permit required' when I input any of the 3 CRNs.

Hey everyone.
I just got a call from tufts.
Sorry I won't get to meet you guys!! Enjoy sunny Florida.

omg that's awesome!! (and so last minute!!.. i was so ready to meet you tomorrow at the orientation haha) but congratulations..and good luck!!!

sorry about that.. i guess that only works for concentrations other than pharm. thanks for clarifying 🙂

i have a ticket to tampa (airline wont refund), so when I use it i will def let you know..

Goodluck!!!:luck:

Good luck at Tufts!! Hope you already have some winter clothing...that's one thing you don't have to worry about in sunny FL 😎

It was nice meeting you guys yesterday, esp. my Pharmacology classmates. I started a Facebook group for the Pharm. concentration, so go ahead and join!

Well 1 month into the MM program, and so far so good. I SHOULD be studying for the Foundations exam on Monday, but I've been at it for a good part of the day and my brain needs a break. So what do you guys think about foundations? I would guess that Foundations is about as rigorous as a med school class, although I don't have any firsthand experience to base that on. Thoughts? Opinions? Is the program living up to expectations?

Glad to see this thread is still in use this semester!

The Pharmacology concentration is going well for me. jwied, I definitely know what you mean about the upcoming Foundations exam- I'm going to let my brain rest from today and yesterday while the Gators take on Bama tonight. I'm definitely cracking open a few brews... I earned it! 😎

Overall, Foundations seems to be very manageable. The lectures are posted online so if you get stuck in the other room or you can't make it to class, then you have the option to watch it online at your own pace. The good thing about the course is that we are tested on the most important topics and not the picky details of everything covered in undergrad courses.

Do you have Responsible Conduct in Research this semester? Probably the most laid back class I've ever had, granted it's only 1 credit. I don't have too much background in research practice, so it is certainly beneficial. 20% of our grade is attendance (plus, according to the syllabus, there are no classes scheduled after Nov. 5th). The other 80% is a 6 page paper due at the end of November... how awesome is that?

Glad to hear everything is going well for you jwied, and may you and everyone else have continued success.

Hey guys, I'm new to this thread. I'm very interested in the Medical Masters Program offered, but I'm kind of discouraged. It says the minimum MCAT is 20, but I have a 19, however my overall GPA is a 3.84 with a 3.91 science GPA. With that being said, should I even bother? =/

gujuDoc.. thanks for the reply, I did take Kaplan but will retake it in the summer. However, if I weren't to do a MS program, what would be best to do in the year off, considering I don't get into Medical School Fall 2011. My thoughts were to gain even more clinical experience than what I already have, such as working at a hospital or clinic. Any other suggestions to make me a more competitive applicant (asides from a higher MCAT) ??

Seems as though those of us that are currently in the MSMS program at USF are one year too early for USF's new Medical Track program... they made some important changes to the current programs available:

1) "Addition" of the Preprofessional Medical Track (pretty much the IMS curriculum), including Basic Medical: Biochemistry, Anatomy, Microbiology and Immunology, Histology, Genetics, Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, and Pathology. There's also an Ethics course as well as a Case Studies course.

2) The current programs, i.e. Anatomy, Aging and Neuroscience, Molecular Medicine, Pharm, etc. are all moving to a Research Track.

I'm really thinking of applying now to med schools, with the only option being to update the schools with my first semester grades as they become available... but I'm also concerned about throwing $500+ to applying this cycle if it really isn't worth it.

Gujudoc, I appreciate your PM the other day... have you heard much about the new program? I suppose if I don't get in this year I can hang around for the new Medical Track MS.

Yeah the new Medical Track program is essentially the IMS program with a new name, hence the "addition" of the Medical Track. I didn't know they had talked about doing away with it but when one of my classmates mentioned they were changing some things and making a Medical Track I figured they were going to do something with the IMS since they wouldn't have two comepeting programs with the same curriculum.

I wanted to apply to Georgetown's program and the IMS but I didn't have the MCAT scores and LORs ready at the time. So, if all doesn't work out I'll have to take another look at the bigger name programs.
No I'm pretty sure the new program is just replacing the current IMS program. I know they were talking about doing away with IMS at one point so this is probably a way of keeping such a program still in place without having a separate IMS program.

You know there is honestly a reason I was hoping Chibrown who got into Tufts MBS would get into there and secretly praying for such. USF's programs are not the best, they don't hold much weight with many other schools, and they are not the best organized.

I may have spent and arm and leg to go to BU but bu's program is far better coordinated then the programs at USF.

Awesome... Can't wait to see what the future has in store for me.
I see. Yeah there were a lot of people who ended up having to SMPs elsewhere after USF's programs to get into med school.

I'm also pretty sure that the new "Medical Track" programs are indeed a replacement for the IMS. The OSDE hinted pretty strongly at this when I was meeting with them while I was applying for the IMS program earlier this year. The person I spoke with said they were going to be reorganizing the IMS program so that it closer resembled a traditional masters degree.
The whole situation is pretty interesting... The IMS program originally never had support from everyone at USF. Apparently the organizers of the program intended it to be introductory to the COM (that is, that most graduates would be accepted to the COM upon completion of the IMS program) but not everyone was on board with that idea; thus only about 1/2 of the IMS grads got into the COM at USF. It would seem to me that moving the IMS program farther away from the original goal is a concession to the opponents of the program. The OSDE is certainly aware of more "traditional" and "successful" masters programs, such as BU and Georgetown, because they spoke of these programs to me. I'm not sure what they are looking to accomplish through this reorganization. Lets cross our fingers that it turns out good!

the "new" IMS program won't be around for at least another 2 cycles...so not next year...and will probably be 1) more of a bridge program and 2) more of a trad. master's program...or actually more like EVMS' program (research paper and not every single basic science class) and less of the complete basic science first year curriculum.

also up until last year the acceptance somewhere was around 85% and at USF ~80%...last year it did drop but there's been a big change at USF admin-wise as I'm sure you're privy to. I'm not sure what that means for this year's class I guess everyone will see later on this year...

The medical track you're speaking of is close to the IMS curriculum...but not quite...it actually has a combo of 1st and 2nd year classes so I'm hesitant to say it's the same thing or that they are competing. The med school curriculum for the first year is all combined into blocks (which I'm sure you know) and classes overlap and span the whole year...other's we don't see for a month or two at a time. For instance musculoskeletal block was very molec bio/genetics heavy, not much for physio. Second block is all neuro and endocrine related, not heavy on molec bio or biochem, but lots of neurobio as you can imagine.

That medical track may perhaps become the IMS program of the future but they're not the same curriculum...I guess next year there will be more insight since the case studies course is a summer course. we'll see...

USF IMS how many got in:

In 2007 10 were admitted to USF med, 2 withdrew, 2 admitted elsewhere, 1 who didn't get in.

So that was 12/15 which was 80% only.

In 2006

Of 15 students only 8 were admitted into USF med and 2 were admitted elsewhere. That's only 10 of 15 or 67'%

The two accepted elsewhere in 2006 were to FSU and USA in Alabama

In 2005

There were 7 students in the initial starting IMS class of which 5 got into USF med, 1 into a DO school, and one did not get into med school.

In 2008 I heard there was a higher percentage getting into USF med of about 14 out of 15. The 15th person got in this past year after doing an MPH after IMS.

In 2009-2010 only 4 people or so got into USF med.

So as you can see it is nowhere near 85% of the students getting in except for the 2008-2009 school year. 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008 do not show the same sort of statistics. These statistics for the most part are from a powerpoint presentation given by the OSDE office about IMS statistics.

not going to argue numbers...its pointless...yes only 4 got in to USF last year...a couple got in elsewhere. and I got the %'s off of Dr. Nazian's research poster on his door not the IMS ppt. my main point was that up until last year if you were a solid candidate your chances were good...80% of 15 is still a pretty good number of students comparatively. if you do well in IMS your chances are good somewhere, if not the same year, then the year after, if you don't get in then it's not the numbers that are at fault it's another part of the application...

Actually it was closer to 67% and 71% up until last year.

I've seen a presentation shown about numbers of graduates going where by the IMS office and they said more like 10 out of 15 was more average of what would get into USF and another 2 or so elsewhere. If I still have it in my email I'll post what it says.

the point behind my whole post wasn't behind the acceptance #'s it was that the medical track is not IMS...at least not yet. and yes you are correct maybe 10 of 15 get in that year and 2 elsewhere...I've seen the ppt a few times. But that compared to the traditional master's programs there (the other 4 or 5 tracks, 3 or 4 out of 100+ students total get accepted at USF) is much better for the same year, but I'm sure I'm telling you things you already know...more of an FYI for those reading this thread.

Does anyone else find their application rather complicated? I dunno if its just me but dont we have to fill out several different things? Also when do applications open?

Im sorry if someone has already answered this, I Couldnt find it

the application is a little redundant but that stems from the interesting "in-between" aspect of the program...an application for the grad school and an application for OSDE and the med school side...strange but for those that go here it saves you a lot of money paying grad rate tuition and not med school tuition.

i'm not sure if it's open yet, but it closes first thing in April if memory serves me correctly. emailing Seema Martinez is your best bet at deadline questions and such.
