For a first-year student (from Texas) at an Ivy League institution:

Should students use AP credit to skip Bio & Chem to go straight to advanced bio courses / organic chemistry?

Also, if the school only offers one introductory biology course (no second semester), will UTexas medical schools accept this as fulfilling prerequisites, assuming the student takes another 1-3 semesters of advanced bio?

Thanks.

I took AP Bio and even my UG college wouldn't accept it to fulfill premed requirements. I have to take the intro bio classes anyways. Plus if your degree is in biology you might have to take them too, and you'll get advanced ones later.

So it’s kind of a tough call. I didn’t have any schools give me flack for using AP bio to skip Bio 1. But I took Bio 2 and another upper level bio with lab.

I think an upper level class with lab is crucial, because the 2 semesters of lab credit for physics, bio, chem, and Ochem are where a lot of schools get hung up.

Edit: to be clear, this is only IF your UG grants you credit for the class + lab, as my school did. If your UG school won’t honor the credits, you’ve gotta retake the class regardless.

As an aside, there’s 2 competing schools of thought on this topic:

1) retake the class - you’ve already taken it so it should be an easy A, plus it’ll be a refresher before the upper level classes.

2) go straight to upper level - the intro classes are notoriously difficult and you don’t want to retake, work your butt off, and get a B or worse. The upper level classes are easier, so you’ll have a better GPA when all is said and done.
