I was going to use my Biology Textbook by Campbell/Reece as my main source of info but after going through it I am thinking it does not have a lot physiology in it. I have the Complete EK series and it seems I may be better off using that for physiology.

I am only in my first semester of Bio so maybe when we start second semester I will realize I'm wrong about the book. Any comments?

I wouldn't use a textbook to study for the MCAT. There is too much extraneous information in there. Use the EK series and only look at the textbook if you do not understand the EK material.

the campbell and reece does have some physiology in it. It's the second half of the book though. Also i didn't know physiology was a required component of the mcat?

So far my general bio class has been focusing mainly on genetics. And next semester i am taking a zoology class.

there is a thread in this forum "Is there anything you wish you studied more"
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=160443

a number of posters mentioned physiology.

Also my EK book has 9 chapters. 5 of them are:
Eukaryotic cell:Nervous System
Endocrine system
digestive/excretory system
cardiovascular/respiratory system
Muscle,bone,skin

So looks like physiology is important according to EK.

I'm going to use Campbell/Reece textbook to study genetics, cellular respiration, and molecular bio. I have a final on those topics in December so that is what I am calling my offical start time to study for the MCAT. Then use mostly the EK textbook as suggested. Thanks all.

The physiology in EK is based on human anatomy and the campbell/reece textbook seems to go back and forth between different animals when discussing physiology and does not concentrate on humans. So I was curious of what people doing who use textbooks as part of their study material since I'm not sure if the MCAT tests on human based physiology.

oh okay i understand you now..... There's a list of material on the mcat website that tells you want you need to know.....

I used C&R to back up the EK books. It was fantastic. The best part for me was the computer-based exercises and quizzes - when your brain just can't stand to read any more, it's great to find another way to stuff in the information, and those exercises are really well done. There is plenty enough detail on human physiology etc. for the MCAT.

It is an awesome book. Everything you'd ever want to know for the MCAT, explained clearly and concisely. Just don't bust your butt over stuff like plant taxonomy...keep the station tuned to physio. 😀

And if you've got any gunners in your bio class that you want to torture - bet them $10 that they can't find all three typos in Campbell 6th. Complain loudly that the 6th has more typos than the 5th. :meanie: Not that I've spent way too much time with that book or anything.
