As an up coming surgical intern with a long commute back and forth from the hospital, I got to thinking about the best way to use that time. Other than day dreaming and Jimmy Buffett.

What I was thinking about was using my IPOD for lectures etc. It would be nice if I could use that drive time to listen to journal articles, audio text books, surgical lectures etc.

Does anybody know if any type of medical education is in an audio format for CD player, IPOD etc.?

I know they have some stuff for IM and EM.. not sure about surgery though.. also a little FYI.. it is against the law to use headphones (in both ears) while driving.. Most have CDs.. thats a better use of time.

You can always use a cassette or FM adapter for the Ipod.

move closer to the hospital? Or simply, talk to family and friends? It is important to take care of yourself, not just increasing your knowledge...

Try listening to language tapes. Much easier to do during a commute than studying medicine. I learned spanish on the subway. All those ten minute rides add up.

yeah the language choice is a good one, as it's something can make you stand out, outside of medicine. i use Linguaphone allTalk. it is expensive but i'm sure there are more reasonable ones.

For the love of all that is holy, don't do it. Do you really want to extend your workday by another hour? Put on some good music and sing your way through the commute. You will be considerably more sane.

Blade 28.. I will be driving. 20 minutes.

My IPOD is hooked into my car stereo, no need for head phones. \

Don't get me wrong, I'm not such a gung ho that I need to be doing something medical all minutes of the day. I can find MANY other things to occupy my time. However, I learned my 3rd year that if I spent more time reading during those down times, 15 minutes here, 30 minutes waiting on OR flip, instead of bull shtting in the lounge, when I got home I was basically finished for the day. Then I could play with the kids, watch football, sleep, etc...

Secondly, my father is an oral surgeon and I have seen that some of his professional journals produce CD's that he can listen to while he is driving.

Was just asking if anybody knew of anything. Just a thought. Not something that is keeping me up at night. 🙂

Thanks to all,

Hobbs

audio digest is great, sign up for the podcast to automatically download to itunes. it downloads the files along with a quiz that you can use for CME credits. now that's a great way to spend some time on your commute.

also, if you change the file name from .m4a to .m4b on itunes files and choose Books & spoken for the genre you will be able to select a faster playback speed without sounding like a chipmunk. You'll be able to get through an hour's worth of stuff in 45min on your ipod.

enjoy!

I'm looking for a way to learn Spanish while driving in my car every day.

ARe there any free Spanish training MP3s available?

Hey there,
Use your drive time to relax. You will be sick of cramming things into your head. I have a 15-minute drive to the hospital and I LOVE that I can actually NOT listen to anything.

You will be spending about 12 hours each day listening to tons of facts and factoids that you will be forced to remember. Let you commute be your unwind time.

I do use my elliptical trainer time to listen to audio tapes. (I make my own.) This has been a great help with ABSITE study. It has been timesaver when I am just tired of reading journals or texts. I summarize my journal articles and make drills of things from the text that I just want to remember.

My drivetime = relaxation. My exercise time = anything that breaks the monotomy.

I love the Pimsleur CDs. It's a great method and good for everyone from beginners to advanced speakers. They have pretty much every language out there. Kind of pricey, but I got mine on EBay and it's worth every penny, in my opinion. I know Spanish is available in MP3 format, don't know about the other languages.

If you can concentrate on medical material while driving enough to retain something, you are not paying enough attention to the road. You might as well DWUI or gab on a cell phone.

hey hobbs,

i am also like yourself thinking that my 40 minutes (one way) of commute could be filled with nice short lectures on medical topics.

if you run into any good 'free' lectures or management types of lectures let me know.

thanks

I started listening to the Audio-Digest tapes back when I was a paramedic w/ a long commute. It really brought home to me that there are no exciting topics, only exciting speakers!

For the EM folks, there are is EM:RAP. It's a more engaging, less reserved version of ground rounds - makes for an entertaining way to learn.
