I've been researching some programs and some say they want Step 2 CS taken before you apply or taken before Novemeber etc. I took it in September but there was no place in the ERAS app that asked when I took it etc. Does the USMLE transcript that they transmit automatically say like Step 1 XXX, Step 2 XXX, Step 2 CS taken?

Also, I've been looking at the ADTS and almost every program shows the USMLE transcript downloading 4-10minutes before everything else. Is that programs checking if the Scores are worth even getting the rest or is it just that those transmit much faster?

Random questions but it's just a long wait till March so might as well just get some answers 🙂

In the USMLE transcript we see all of the exams taken and their scores.

Programs download everything that's been uploaded to their ERAS Post Office. There isn't any way to identify a document as belonging to a particular applicant as it's being downloaded, and there isn't any way to block an uploaded document from being sent. The download happens quickly--just a few seconds per document, and I can virtually guarantee that no programs are trying to time an interruption in the download to check scores before proceeding with the download. I really don't understand the ADTS time stamp you're seeing, but it doesn't signify anything. Perhaps it has something to do with the source of the report being the FSMB rather than the applicant's institutions or ECFMG.

dear MCL: I have a very important question for you. I am a US-IMG. I am planning to take usmle step 3 to get it out of the way. I do not want my score to be seen nor programs know I have taken it. I heard eras 2014 is changed and new exams/scores after we apply won't be automatically transmitted to programs...what is your say?

>>>The automatic retransmission is no longer an option when authorizing the release of the USMLE transcript. Anytime an applicant has new scores available, they will have to manually retransmit the transcript to programs to which they have applied using the retransmit option on the checkbox will be grayed out. (IMGs ONLY)<<<

My understanding is that if you apply and release your sores before your Step 3 results are in, programs will only see the earlier exam results. If your step 3 score is good, you would need to request the retransmission--it's not going to happen automatically. If your step 3 score isn't great, you wouldn't have to release the score and programs won't know you took the exam. If you apply to programs after your Step 3 score is available, programs will see all of the exam results. I hope that makes sense.

MCL: Thank you, this is so confusing I just want to be sure..so I keep on reassuring myself. I have NOT taken my step 3. I was going to take it on Monday but in a fear thought of cancelling if programs will find out. now I will extend it by 2 weeks, study hard, take my exam.

My intention isn't for score to be there for programs to see nor know I took it. I just want to get done with it before residency.

In summary, programs will not know I took step3 nor they will know my score unless I indicate/retransmit my score to them.

The USMLE report does not include exams that you've taken but don't have a score reported out on yet. So, if you took CS in Sept but don't have a score back yet, your USMLE transcript will simply not list CS and it will look identical as if you had not taken it. Once you get your score, you can re-transmit your transcript and it will update.

mcl, as usual, is completely correct.

Does the USMLE transcript update itself? I got my Step 2 CK score on the 25th, and applied everywhere on the 27th. I had authorized release of the USMLE transcript a couple of months before Sept. 15th. Is it required to re-transmit or is having applied on the 27th send out the most recent and updated USMLE transcript and re-transmit is only for if you got your scores AFTER you applied..?

No, the transcript does not update itself.

Most people have said that if you request your transcript the day of your new scores, your transcript will have those scores on it. So, if you did not send your transcript to any program prior to the 27th, you're fine.
