In what case would a DO student take the USMLE rather than the COMLEX? I have heard that it is recommended to do this to put you on more even par for more competitive "MD" residencies. Is there any truth to this? And also, what is meant by "MD" residencies? If a DO gets into one of these, what are the implications for his or her future?

As a totally random side note, I was wondering if a 3.1-3.2 and 32R MCAT from Johns Hopkins undergrad, with good clinical experiences (but none with a DO)would be considered competitive for a NJ state resident applying to UMDNJ-SOM? Thanks so much.

all DO students must take the COMLEX, but if they choose, they can also take step 1 of the USMLE (after year 2). it is a good idea to do this if you pursue an MD residency. to get an MD residency you have to go thru the Match, and DO students are classified differently than MD's. that's basically all i know.
your stats are pretty good, so good luck!
