Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

First pass through World: 67%

Did DIT after that

NBME Form 4: 510 (232 predicted), after 10 days of DIT, when he tells you to take a practice test.

Second-pass through World: 85% (~40% completed... I hope to do a couple hundred more questions before I take the USMLE)

UW Self-Assesment: 690 (255 predicted) Last night. Would be thrilled with this.

The day I did NBME 4 was not my best day. I had a benadryl hangover, because I took some to go to sleep the night before, and I didn't really get going until the second half. Also, I kept stopping to write stuff down to look up during the exam, without pausing it, and found myself pressed for time on a couple blocks. Hopefully the UWorld test is a better representation of where I stand than the NBME test was. Then again, I wouldn't exactly go looking for the nearest cliff to jump off if I got what I got on the NBME. I'd be ok with it.

Got USMLE on Monday (Day after tomorrow). Going to finish tearing through Master the Boards today, and tomorrow, I'm going to just stick to little stuff. Flash-card-type quick memorization stuff. The kind of stuff that I can't keep in my head for more than about a day.

Pretty good feeling about this. I wish I had a couple more days to take another self-assessment, but on the other hand, I think I'd cut my own head off with an axe if I had to wait any longer for this.

And to my allopathic colleagues, close your eyes for a second and pretend you've got this test on Monday, then you get to turn around and take it again 10 days later. And on top of that, you get to study a subject that you've barely seen in the past year, which will account for 20% of your score. That's me.

Need some advice here. I'm taking step II in 10 days and i didn't really give myself a lot of time to study (started this past friday giving me 13 days to study...my lucky number 😵). I've been doing 4 blocks of UWorld a day right now I'm 30% completed with an average of 70%. I'm taking notes on wrong questions and reading through the ones I get right, this takes pretty much all day working from 8am to 10 pm w/ small breaks for food/showering/exercise. I could add a review book, but do I really need to?

My step 1 was a 248 and way above any of my practice tests, so I was thrilled with it but now I'm worried that I won't match that score because I think I over reached for step 1. I'm only applying to medicine but I would still like my two scores to be w/i 5 - 10 points of each other. But compared to everyone else on here 70% on UWorld seems to get a 240 + score.

If you are hitting in the 70s on UWorld, you should be fine. What I would highly recommend is adding Secrets. It's very small, easy to read, but that little book is like dynamite. Secrets + UWorld = will definitely get you over a 240 (if you are capable - and by your Step 1 score - you ARE)! Also, if you want to get a judge of where you are at, I would do a practice test.

Hi all,

I'm prepping for Step 2 CK for July 25th. I finished med school a couple of years ago but had family issues (lets just say I know everything there is to know about multiple myeloma), and am only now getting ready to take Step 2 CK.

Review materials: Step up to Medicine, First Aid (only for obgyn & peds) and UWorld.

I've been studying for the past 6 weeks. I'd review a section in Step up to Medicine (or First Aid for ObGyn & Peds), and then do all the relevant UWorld questions in tutor mode. I finished with a 53% overall. I took extensive notes on any question that I didn't feel like I truly understood. Boy, this filled in a lot of gaps in my medical education. I feel like I know more medicine now than I did when I graduated 2 years ago.

I'm now about 4-5 weeks away from my actual exam. I'm doing about 132 questions a day (44 x 3, random, timed, not-tutor) and am getting 65-75%. I'm making sure I understand the concepts and am making myself explain the answer before I select it. I'm also slowly working through the ones I got incorrect and marked.

Also, when I'm not doing UWorld, like at night or while waiting in line at places, I'm doing the Distractor Avoidance and First Aid questions on my iPhone (the FA questions are way easier than UWorld.)

I plan to take a NMBE self assessment this weekend to highlight problem areas.

Do you think I'm on the path to performing well on this exam?

Do you think if someone knows (almost) every fact in UWorld that they would have little problem on the exam?

Thank you

Thanks for the reply. I've seen all over the internet that step 2 secrets didn't really change between the 2nd and 3rd edition in terms of content. How true is this? bc I can easily get my hands on secrets 2nd ed.

Okay, did this exam, and now I am trying to study for COMLEX. This really sucks, but whatever.

I barely slept, if at all, the night before. I wasn't really nervous about the exam, but it was one of those deals where you know you have to be up early, and you aren't falling asleep, so then you start to worry about not falling asleep, and it snowballs on you.

Also, I had been on a screwy study schedule for the week or so leading up to test day.

But I was running on adrenaline for the entire day. Occasionally, would catch myself staring off at my screen, forgetting that I was taking an exam. But for the most part, I was pretty with it. A little tired, but not where I thought I was going to fall asleep during the exam or anything (I felt like this during step 1).

So overall, I thought the test was easy. There were a handful of stinkers, but I could count on one hand the number of times where I just didn't know what the hell they were getting at.

I was the beneficiary of some good guessing, as well. Some of the ones I had never heard of (but answered based on eliminating choices I was fairly confident I could eliminate), worked out well for me. I was googling stuff on my breaks, because I am a huge tool who does crap like that.

I also made some stupid mistakes. A 3-year-old kid with sickle cell should be taking TMP-SMX for prophylaxis, even when the Pneumococcal vaccine was right there in plain English as a choice. I was thinking about sicklers needing penicillin prophylaxis until age 5, but I had already freaking answered that earlier in the exam. I am a *******.

For USMLE Step 1, I finished that thing in about six hours, including breaks. This thing was a different story. I got the "five minute warning" pop-up on all but a couple blocks, and I probably only finished one block with more than 10 minutes to spare. The moral of the story is, if you are a slow test taker, practice your ass off on World. If I have anything going for me, it's that I am fast, and this thing really tested my speed. I haven't always been fast though, so it can definitely be worked on.

Overall, I have a good feeling. I'm sure I made some really boneheaded mistakes on there though, just for lack of sleep/concentration. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks. I'd be surprised if I didn't get above average though.

It sounds like you are doing all of the right things and are indeed on the path to a great score. Keep it up and good luck! I think doing an NBME is a great idea, because it will give you an idea of where you stand. Good luck!

No idea. I haven't seen the 2nd edition. I just know that I have the 3rd edition and it rocks my socks. I'd suck it up and spend the 30 bucks if it was me, because I'm an underliner/highlighter. Plus it's a good enough book to have, but it's up to you.

You're gonna rock it. 250+. Let me know how the CRAPLEX goes. I have it in a couple of weeks with the USMLE a week later. Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice as I was studying for Step 2 CK! I took my test June 10th, received my score today (the 3rd Wednesday, for those of you wondering how long it is taking to get scores). I took the test 10 days after I finished my internal medicine rotation, which was perfect because I didn't have to study much internal medicine during my dedicated study time. I used uworld, I did most of the medicine questions during my medicine rotation, then just finished those questions I hadn't done and did a few random blocks in the last few days and read through Step up to Step 2 (yes, these were my only resources...). I took Uworld self-assessment 1 week out and it predicted my score to be 250, which was my goal.

On the actual test day, my timing on the blocks was pretty good. I used the full hour of break time to walk around the building I was in because I was struggling to stay awake during the testing for some reason. I started doing the blocks faster after my lunch break and ended up finishing about 1 hour ahead of schedule. I felt pretty good coming out of the test, thinking it was much easier than I thought it would be. I felt that I had to convince myself a few times during the test that I wasn't still doing uworld practice blocks because the questions were so similar.

Got my score today...thrilled!! 251 (Step 1 - 245). Good luck to everyone still studying!!

Thanks. Good luck to you too.

I've got a pretty decent feeling about my USMLE, but I wouldn't be shocked if I wasn't quite up to par either. Like I said, I felt okay, but I don't think I was at my best. I guess we'll find out in a week.

COMLEX tomorrow. I am ready for this nonsense to end.

Hey guys, I know I'm going to sound like a neurotic med student (who here isn't, I guess), but I got a 249 on Step 2, 248 on Step 1. For some weird reason, I feel like this is a disappointment. Does it look bad that I only improved by one point (I heard Step 2 was easier to do well on...)?

Since this is the info-giving thread, I went through 80% of UW in 3 weeks or so, and that's the only resource I used. My average was upper-60s. Didn't take a practice test.

Good luck to all of you still studying. 🙂

Improving one point would have sucked if you got a 215 on step 1. While step 2 is probably easier than step 1, a 268 would be no joke. Neither is your 249. Congrats on the badass score!

Is step one really easier to get a good score on? Don't they normalize the tests so that the medians of step 1 and 2 are the same?

Step 2 is easier than Step 1...the mean scores for the Step 1 and Step 2 that I took were 221 and 230, respectively.

Therefore, to do as well on the Step 2 as you did on Step 1, you should hit about 10 points higher.

I got in the 250s for both so my Step 1 was a lot better than Step 2.

Here is my progress so far:

Step 1: 214
UWorld: 60% (currently going over UWorld again in tutor mode, 85% with 36% of q's done.)
UWSA: 224 (~2 weeks before exam)
NBME 4: 244 (5 days before exam)

My test is on 7/9
I read Secrets at the end of the year. After finishing UWorld the first time, I read most of Step up to Step 2 while doing UWorld a 2nd time.
Now, I plan on cramming secrets for a final review while doing as many UWorld questions that I can

I will post my Step 2 experiences on Saturday.

Took my exam on the 20th. Tomorrow is the 3rd Wednesday from my exam date. Should I expect my score report tomorrow, or is next Wednesday more likely?

@TexasTriathlete:

I took mine 6/19. I'll be interested to know if you get an email tomorrow. I am really, really, really sweating this thing out.

I scored a 260 on my step 1, but was "forced" into taking step 2 as two of my top residency choices require that I sit for CK before november first. This was my only free time before then, so I spent two weeks cramming and now have my fingers crossed. I guess I have to score >270 to "equal" my old score (given the 10 point difference in the averages). I hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot by taking it... perhaps I should have just crossed those schools off my list?

Just a hunch, but I think you'll probably be ok even if you don't get a 270, or even if you don't get all that close.

How well do the practice NBME's predict the actual score on the Step 2?

I took NBME 3 2 weeks ago and got a 250, NBME 2 last week and got a >265, then NBME 4 yesterday and got 265.

Averaged 70% on UWorld first time around, 2nd time around I'm at 89% with having done 1200 questions.

I have read through some of FA Step II CK (but I didn't really like it). I haven't really read Step up 2 Step 2 or Medicine (I read some of the Step up to Medicine during my medicine clerkship, but it was the first clerkship I went through-- a year ago). I read through Secrets once already and FA Psych.

I am just curious about how well the NBMEs correlate to the actual score.

Angeloflouis was right.... no score today. Which is really more of a 🙂/🙁 sorta thing. Be back in 7 days.

Yeah I kind of figured this week would probably be a little too soon. I really don't even care that much. I think I know, roughly, how I did on this one. My concern is the unpredictable nightmare that is COMLEX Level 2Ck

If you are hitting in the 70s on UWorld, you should be fine. What I would highly recommend is adding Secrets. It's very small, easy to read, but that little book is like dynamite. How necessary is Step up to Medicine? I'm doing MTB 2+3 & Secrets (3rd ed) & will add UW soon +/- kaplan (if time permits). PLEASE ADVICE if this is enough.

Step Up To Medicine is not necessary. If you have 6+ weeks to read through that monstrosity, then by all means. But, it is far from a necessity. In fact, outside of this forum, I know of no one that used that book as a primary source.

Thanks for the reply, but do you think my combo will work? Shooting for 250+.
Thanks again.

Thanks again.

It does provide greater detail. If you like SuTM then by all means use it. I still wouldn't use it as a primary source and just supplement more high yield sources like UWorld.

Just took the free 150 to warm up for Saturday... 78%. MedFriend's conversion is a joke so I will not take that seriously.

For medicine concepts, when UW explanations fell short, I found STUM to be a good source for further reading. It can be confusing as a primary source for board study (purely because of the volume of information) and it doesn't seem like it was created for that purpose, unlike MTB, that will specifically highlight "best initial test" or best next step in management, etc. I like it bc I am familiar with it. Like the previous poster mentioned, the majority of people I know that have taken it this year haven't used it at all and have done well ( > 240) with just UW + (any book) good luck!

So, this by far the nerdiest thing I have ever done, but in procrastinating my studying I plopped the last 40 or so test results from everyone posting here into an excel file, made a little graph, and fit a trend line to it to predict scores since I didn't trust medfriends one and couldn't find another good one. It shoots lower than medfriends, r^2 is .82, so it's not bad.

Try it out and let me know if it helps you, that way we can have something to use at least.

It's: Step 2 CK Score = 249.22x + 72.83

Where 'x' = youre % correct in Uworld as a decimal.

Cheers

Sorry ..by "it" you are referring to SUTM, correct? thx

Yes. SUTM is a very long read. If you have the time and energy to do it, all the power to you. But UWorld is the most important source for Step 2. Don't let the reading prevent you from doing it.

Thanks. I think I will stick to UW as my priority. It's just making me anxious reading every other post mention SUTM or SUT-Step 2 as a valuable resource when I already went ahead and spent money on MTB 2+3, since I heard FA is insufficient for CK. So to learn of another book at this point is making me think ..OMG..did I buy the wrong book(s)?!?! I will try with what I have and do UW..see my scores and take it from there. I hope I won't need to add another book ..no time for that anyway. So that's the plan.......thanks for your reply and advice.

So I took the test today. I am definitely glad it is over. Everything is one big giant blur. There are a mix of easy questions, questions that I was between multiple choices, and questions that I had no idea what the test maker was getting at... which is not too different from the shelf exams. I am kicking myself for a few questions I got wrong. I hate getting "easy" questions wrong, especially when I change my answer to wrong. Even more annoying is when I do a sequential question and the next question tells me that I get a question wrong! I had a bunch of heart sounds questions. Honestly, I didn't like them, but hopefully I got em right. The quality of the sounds weren't spectacular. I felt like the majority of my test was medicine and ob/gyn. There were a bunch of psych questions as well, but I love psych. Time was not an issue for the exam. I finished each section with ~5 minutes to spare to skim through my answers, especially to my marked ones.

One thing I did differently from step 1 was manage my break time better. I had small snacks after block 2, 4, and 6 instead of having a big lunch. That kept me from having a food coma that haunted me during Step 1.

As for question length, many people have complained that the stems are longer. I found them comparable to the other practice tests I have taken. There are a mix of the usual short stem questions and longer ones with labs, etc, just like UWorld. The reason why the questions may SEEM longer is because the resolution of the screen is ridiculously small for the real thing, making the questions compressed and seem longer. I highly recommend all of you to do the free 150 questions the NBME provides. It provides the feel of the REAL Fred V2 and how it will feel like when you take it. There are a few minor subtle differences from UWorld, though UWorld emulates the Fred V2 almost perfectly. Additionally, there are a few questions t on the free 150 that are similar to that test.

Here are the sources I used:

USMLE World
: Worth its weight in gold, platinum, silver, bronze, and plutonium. Get intimate with this qbank, know every single orifice well. Do the QBank twice if you can. I did UWorld 1.5 times. A significant amount of questions were based on concepts discussed in this bank, and a few of the questions themselves were highly similar to a UWorld question. This is BY FAR the most important source to study for Step 2. You are doing yourself a major disservice not doing this bank.

Step Up to Step 2: Great for high yield pictures and to use as a REVIEW TOOL for USMLE World, not the other way around. I find myself reading this book and recalling facts from UWorld in my mind as I hammer concepts in my mind. Plus the quick hits contain some excellent information that may be relevant. I would add looking the pictures from Step Up to Medicine because it contains different ones.

Secrets: High yield, excellent review of concepts. I highly recommend using this book, possibly reading it cover to cover before you begin UWorld and then read it again a week before the exam.

If you do these sources, you should be golden for the majority of the questions on that exam.

My progression:

Step 1: 214/90
UWorld: 60% (went over 52% of Uworld again in tutor mode with an 85% cumulative score)
UWSA: 224 (~2 weeks before exam after first run through UWorld)
NBME 4: 244 (5 days before exam)
Free 150: 78% (didn't even bother with Medfriends conversion since its full of crap).

Now all I need is the real thing. 😳

According to the First Aid for step 2 ck that I have, the mean was 213.

USMLE World
: Worth its weight in gold, platinum, silver, bronze, and plutonium.

Completely agree. I took mine in early July. I had medicine last so I had a bit of a head start, but I did Uworld twice and at least 80% of the questions on my test had been covered in a question on there. Definitely do that.

I used FA for Step II, and I know it's not quite as popular as SUTM and SU to CK, but I thought it did a nice job overall. It covered most of the rest of the material pretty well. Anyway, my progress so far:

Step I: 245
UWorld Average: 74%
UWorld Self-assessment: 268 (1 week out)

Waiting for the real thing...

I guess next week? You know... today is the day that the majority of the new MS3's get their Step1 score back. I wonder if that didn't slow down the CK reporting, or worse, bump it back a week. Though like I keep saying, ignorance = bliss.

I also checked the step 1 board and found this post from today

"Btw, I did not get an email first.

I have been logged into the Check Exam Status page since this morning and pressing refresh over and over until the link showed up at 11AM EST "

Hey guys, I am looking for any thoughts or recommendations. I am 2 1/2 weeks into my step 2 studying and thus far have finished UWorld 2x (finished it once during rotations and a second time in the past 2 weeks). I have done DIT once, and have finished reading through Secrets in the past 3 weeks. The first pass of UWorld I was in the high 60s/low 70s, I can't remember, I forgot to write it down before I reset. The 2nd time around I was at 82%.

My plan for the next 3 weeks (Test day Aug 4) is:
Do UWorld 1 more time
Do Secrets 1 more time (spread out over the next 3 weeks)
Read through Step up to Step 2 over 2 weeks and then again over the last 7 days

Does this sound like a good use of time, or do you have any recommendations on alterations of this plan? I would really appreciate some feedback Thanks!

Awesome..Congratulations!
