Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

This thread is both scary and comforting.

I have just started studying, and have 5 weeks left. I am scoring at around 50-55%. This excludes psych questions, since I just did psych, and do better on those questions.

People have told me that USMLE World is harder than the actual test. Do you agree?

I think the questions are a tad easier than world... But I dont care how easy it is, once fatigue sets in your bound to make a ton of stupid mistakes.

Haven't posted to the boards in about a year. Took step 2CK on June 23rd. The actual exam felt pretty difficult. I didn't get a great night sleep the night prior, but felt well-prepared going into it. I used step up to step 2 and uworld. I also took the uwsa and NBME exams 3 and 4. I probably would not use sus2 again as there were a ton of mistakes and insufficient details. Uworld was pure gold. I ended up doing all of the uworld questions 2.5x and almost used it as my primary study guide.

Uworld-73% (first time through, all unused, random, and timed)
UWSA-268
NBME4-260
NBME3-259
Actual Step 2CK-268

Needless to say, I am extremely pleased. Now I have to get ready for COMLEX level 2 🙁

Amazing score. Did you take the NBMEs towards the end of your study time or spaced in between?

Took UWSA 3 weeks before actual exam, NBME4 2 weeks before, and NBME3 1 week before.

The uworld sim exams were also the closest predictors for my step 1 score.

When you guys take the NBME, do you guys look at the answers people post online or just do it to see your score? Wondering if 3h worth of questions and no feedback to even know which ones you got wrong is worth it.

this awesome! congrats on ur score and thx for posting. i was getting worried because I also had a drop between UWSA and NBME 4. hopefully my score is closer to UWSA!

Uworld: 74% Step 2 CK: 250
about the same as step 1 where I think I had UW of 76% and exam score: 253

Also, I used no books or any other material other than the World questions, of which I did 1,600.

I had the same feeling. I was getting worried as my scores were trending down as my test date approached. I wish that uworld had more sim exams for step 2 like they do for step 1. Good luck!!!

I took them just for the experience of sitting down and simulating the actual test as well as getting a score to see where I was at a particular point in preparation.

My progress has been on the opposite spectrum as you guys.

NBME 1: 195 (before studying)
NBME 2: 237 (after 2 months studying and a full IM rotation)
NBME 3: 239 (improved by whole 2 points after a month of studying !! wow!!)
UWSA: 227 (two weeks later)
NBME 4: 270 (one moth later, was pretty shocked, but felt like I marked about 6 qs per section) turns out I only missed 12 questions.

Should I be worried about this???😕 I mean, I got a 227 on UWSA and I really want to be closer to the last NBME I took.

Free 133: 87%
UWorld Qbank: 71% (last 500 qs ranged between 75-80)

Step 2 NBME 4: 590/251 (16 days out)
Step 2 NBME 2: 550/242 (7 days out)

Should I be worried about the 9 point drop? Should I take NBME 3 before the real deal? Thanks for your input people!

Are you serious? I hate it when people come in here, doing several standard deviations better than the average, and are still worried about their scores.

You will probably get a 265, like everyone else on here "gets".

Step 2 NBME 4: 590/251 (16 days out)
Step 2 NBME 2: 550/242 (7 days out; taken on 7/20/11)

Should I be worried about the 9 point drop? Should I take NBME 3 before the real deal, or is it a risk in case my score remains stagnant/drops? Thanks for your input people!

Sorry - forgot to mention that my exam is on 7/27/11 and my target score is around 240.

I was quite surprised too. I wish I could tell you what exactly happened. I walked in confident, and more excited than nervous. As I was taking the test, it felt identical to doing UWorld blocks. When I was doing the UWorld blocks, most of the time, I didn't know how I was doing while taking them but I consistently got in the 70-75 range in the last two-three weeks. As I was taking the real thing, I felt the same way- I really didn't know. Don't bug out based on my result. I chalk it up to a bad day or that I'm just a poor standardized test taker. One thing I will say is take the previous posts with a grain of salt. Most people posting do so after being proud of their grade. I'm sure there are a number of students that had my experience that just didn't feel like posting. I also used MTB, DIT and SU 2 Step 2 so maybe I shouldve used the time to go over all of my wrong answers. Just keep doing what you're doing (because you're doing well) and let the chips fall as they may.

Now I'm worried. My prep was nearly identical to yours (dit, mtb, uworld). I did do uworld twice though. My uwsa 4 weeks out was 235 which is a lot less than yours. Im really hoping i score 240 plus but who knows. Your score is pretty decent though it's just sdn and the 260 scores that seem to inflate everything

Thanks for the input guys! Question: I am supposed to take it on Tuesday, with the goal of 250+ (my step 1 wasn't as good as I wanted). Am averaging about 65% on random Uworld blocks. Should I postpone the exam?

As a rule of thumb, you should avoid any USMLE exam until you are hitting 75% on UWorld blocks (if you have the luxury of postponing, that is). You'll never know for certain unless you take an NBME though.

I think the questions are a tad easier than world... But I dont care how easy it is, once fatigue sets in your bound to make a ton of stupid mistakes. I remeber in the 7th or 8th block I had one question describing a patient with a mass effect in the brain with symptoms of galactorrhea... I picked something so far off like mastitis, for some reason flagged it and moved on... then when I came back to review it and i reread it, i realized my mistake and change my answer at the last second... who gets a prolactinoma wrong? thats fatigue for you

If a test-taker gets a Prolactinoma question wrong, they should have an 'automatic fail' like the DMV does in your driver license test.

Step 1-227/98

started DIT 2 months out. after finishing DIT, studied hard-core for 4 weeks, but not hard enough i guess.

I noticed you said you're going into ER. Have you heard anything about having negative results if step 2 is lower than step 1?

I had almost identical UWSA and Uworld scores... Hope my outcome is even somewhat close to yours. Congrats.

obviously it doesn't help. if you drop 10-20 points, that would hurt. I've heard as long as you're in the 220's, you'll get some interviews, but I will probably only have a chance at where I rotate. EM is pretty competitive

so i am trying to make a plan to study for step 2, but every time i come home after rotation i feel so knackered lol, and i have to take step 2 by December. Any suggestions 😕

Red Bull.

If you're on rotations, the best thing you can do to prep for step 2 is to study hard for your rotation.

I second that....I wish I had watched more kaplan vids, done more q's during rotations.....it would've made this process much easier.

5 hr energy works well too.

So, I have 8 days til my exam and am debating how I want to proceed with my last week. I did NBME Form 2 last weekend and got a 239 and did UWSA today and got a 248. My goal is 250+. I have done DIT once, Secrets once, World 2 1/2 times (will be done my 3rd pass next weekend). I have read though Step up to step 2 one time on top of DIT.
My idea is to read through step up 2 step 2 one more time and finish my 2nd pass of secrets and finishing my 3rd pass of world by next weekend. I'm not sure if I should start a new resource this late in the game. Does anyone have any recommendations on this? Thanks!

awesome score man. i think im gonna follow your advice and finish up world (2nd pass) then try to redo the one's i missed rather than re-reading sus2. uwsa yesterday was 254, and i just wanna make sure i maintain >250 with a little over a week to go. thanks.

Those who took it recently: did you have a lot of stats on the actual exam? What about psych?

I just took it today and I had a couple stats questions. Most of them were interpreting data or having to determine the type of study done. There was one question involving calculations for sens/spec and it was presented in an odd way to try to throw you off.

I actually had a decent amount of psych on mine. decent amount of peds pysch, strangely enough. Not much in regards to defense mechanisms. Know your Axis 1 and 2 diseases.

I took Step 2CK today.

Prep: 8-10 weeks of studying. I did Step up to Medicine, First Aid for ObGyn/Peds, and all of UWorld. I did UWorld 1.5 times. My overall % on UWorld was 60%.

Impression: Test was hard. There were probably twenty questions directly from UWorld which was nice. I marked 5-7 questions per block. But there were more questions than that per block that I either didn't have a clue on or I could narrow it down to 2 answers. Some stems were longer than UWorld, some weren't. Questions were a bit vaguer, and just seemed old and irrelevant.

I had a ton of repeats. I had 3 questions on the antibiotic of choice for aspiration pneumonia. I had 2 questions, in the same block, on treatment for postpartum hemorrhage. And both questions (!) didn't have the "standard UWorld" answers. My biostats was calculated a PPV and then a couple of non calculating questions that I'm sure I missed.

My first two blocks felt fine, the 3rd and 4th seemed difficult. By the 7th I was getting a headache and fatigued, and I almost collapsed at question 22 in the 8th block 🙂 It was hard to hit "submit" and finish the exam. I've failed this exam before. Last time I took it, I got a 165. I know that's horrible, but I didn't know anything. I didn't study really at all, and just winged it.

I just want to pass. The NBME form gave me a 200 six weeks ago and I know of some really dumb mistakes I made on that one. I just hope that I knew enough and that all of my studying paid off and that I pass the stupid test. I had a lot of "questions" that I wrote down on that stupid little pad they gave you and I looked them up in my breaks and got them right (not all of them!) I try to convince myself that I knew nothing and made a 165, and with all my studying and UWorld, it gave me enough to get those 24 extra points in order to at least pass.

So...I got a 170 on this practice NBME the school administered. 🙄 This was after the school made us do nine mock patient exams in the morning, and this was without any preparation or review.

Doing usmleworld right now, started off around 50s, now at around 65s-70s. Hope that 170 means nothing. 😀

Took CK today. I thought it was more vague and general than UW and the question stems on CK offered FAR LESS information than any UW q. As far as length of the questions - someone had said previously that they just seem longer bc of the resolution and I agree. They're on par with UW in terms of length. There were roughly 10 gimmies per block. The rest were 3rd-4th order questions. And then there were the "A 4 year old adopted febrile HIV+ girl born in Serbia is 34 weeks pregnant presents with painless vaginal bleeding, a pupruric rash and has a systolic and diastolic murmur on inspiration. What do you do next" myrr.. 😕

Breakdown of contents: Medicine>Peds>Psych>OBGYN>Derm???>Biostats>Ethics

Timing was off for me. I tried to keep at a good pace, but kept getting hung up on a few q's that completely threw me off. Know your preventive med for topics like HTN, TIA, DM, the usual suspects - I had a few q's every block. UW is definitely key. Master the boards is on the whole a great review book. STUM is better to start off with, but MTB nailed it for most of the topics. There were a significant number of pathophys q's that had more of a Step 1 feel to it. The most heavily tested topics were ID, Resp, Cards, Rheum, Shock, shock and more shock (I could've written down a novella on shock on those erase boards and still be left scratching my head). I had about 5-6 EKGs(medium difficulty), 3-4 Heart sounds (easy)...not much else media.

Overall, I thought it was more difficult than UW due to the vagueness of the questions - but I could've easily been over/underthinking. My studying was pretty disjointed and spread over 2 rotations, so my impression may be different from someone who has a better overall understanding. Hopefully the score report will be kind :xf:
Good luck!!!

UWorld (1st pass - during 3rd year rotations) - 70%
UWorld (2nd pass - during board study) - 81%
NMBE 2 - 256 (6 days in)
NBME 4 - 262 (2 weeks in)
UWorld SA - 268 (3 weeks in)

I mainly used UWorld as my primary study tool. I also used Secrets and I read half of Step Up to Medicine. I really spent my first week reading different books trying to find the one I thought was best. I tried First Aid, Secrets, Step Up to Step 2, and Step Up to Medicine. I really, really did not like Step Up to Step 2. I thought it was way too short and riddled with mistakes. I think this might be a good book if used along with DIT, because he would add to it and correct the mistakes. However, I would steer clear of this unless I was doing DIT. Overall, I felt Secrets and Step Up to Medicine were the best. So I spent the 2nd week reading these 2. I only finished 1/2 of Step Up to Medicine. I had to set it aside the 3rd week in order to study OMM for the COMLEX. The final week I spent going over my notes from UWorld, Secrets again, and the questions I missed on UWorld.

Overall, I felt this test was tough. The first block, I think I marked around 12 and I was pretty shocked. It got a little easier on the 2nd block, and blocks 3-6 were pretty straight forward. 7 was a little tougher, and I felt like I got totally owned on the last block. I think I marked like 17! I think it was mostly fatigue, I was beat down. Afterward, I wanted to double check where they were sending my test results, and I needed to write down my address. I had to think really hard to remember my address, so needless to say I was pretty tired. I think the last block totally screwed me.

I have my own opinion on timing. I think when you are studying (Uworld, NMBEs, whatever) you are much more likely to pick an answer and go with it. However, on the real deal you agonize more over every answer and you double check more. I think this is what slows you down more and makes the timing worse. I never had problems with timing on UWorld or NBMEs, but I definitely had a couple of blocks where I barely finished in time and wasn't able to go back and check the ones I marked.

There were more gimmes on the actual test than on UWorld or the NBMEs, but there were also tougher questions than on either of these. I felt the tougher questions were tough either because of a lack of information or because of a flood of information. They would give you 5 or 6 problems and make it really complicated and you weren't sure which was causing the issue or which to address first. I felt like I had a large amount of OB. If I could do one thing different it would have been to study more OB. I felt like this was overly represented on my test, and much of it was very tough. A lot of it was kind of weird stuff, like the woman was home and had a baby last week, and then stuff starts hitting the fan. I had some wild questions that I wasn't sure about (ex: Who is more likely to get AIDs - the pitcher or the catcher? lol. I dunno). Overall, I thought the test was extremely tough. My goal going in was 260+, but I don't think there is any way I did that. I would be thrilled with anything over a 250, and I really, really hope it isn't lower than my Step 1 (mid 240s).

If I could do it again. I would stick with UWorld of course, and definitely Secrets. I wish I had more time to use Step Up to Medicine, and I would have added something for OB. I definitely could have studied harder. I was scoring well on my practice tests, and I think that may have given me a false sense of security. Good luck to everyone.

Hahahahha. I had a funny sex question like that on Step 1 that sort of made me giggle during the test. My guess would be the catcher bc I heard the rectal mucosa gets damaged during "the process" and you are more like to actually get the HIV virus in your blood if it gets into one of these cracks (no pun intended).

I bet youre gonna do great so don't worry. 🙂 I have my test tomorrow at 12, so nervous.

(ex: Who is more likely to get AIDs - the pitcher or the catcher? lol. I dunno).

I saw that question today; This is actually a nice way of putting it, the actual wording was just nasty to read. When I read that question and the choices I just thought to myself - I cannot believe they are asking this...

Yea, and this test had a lot of questions that you could not prepare for. They were just judgement calls u had to make... and a few overly picky questions where they were just being cheap.

I agree on the overly picky questions. I felt some of them were pretty clear what the answer was if you knew the concept but then they would have two answers that were almost identical. Very uworld-like of them.

I took it yesterday and did not have that question. I had these two similar ones:

- 16 year old male has unprotected sex with another male. What do you do? I elected to screen for HIV/STDs.

- ******ed girl masturbates profusely and her parents can't get her to stop.

I found a lot of the questions just to plain suck. They're just bad. Some are just so vague you can't even tell which problem you should address. USMLE needs to hire USMLEWorld's question writers. They are much better. I rarely do a World question and feel like I'm not sure what I should be gunning for. And the pathophys "answers" for some of the questions were insane.

---

I need some serious peer support. Is it pretty common to not have a clue how you did? When I think back on the test, I know I got a lot right, but I keep thinking of questions that I got wrong too. And all the ones I just felt completely lost with. I previously stated that I failed this test before with a 165 without studying. I have to believe that with 10 weeks of preparation 8-10 hours a day and maybe 10 days off in that 10 weeks that I learned enough to bump my score up to a pass.

I feel so worried about it because when taking the test, I kept thinking, "this material is so random, that I wouldn't even know where to look to read some of this stuff."

I got this question with a picture of a big giant mass coming out of an ass. I got asked what is the next step.... I think to my self ... go puke in the bathroom.

took it today. Overally, i thought it was easier than Step 1 and Uworld. There were a good amount of very vague questions. Took me longer to finish than Step 1 but i think you could "think through" step 2 more than you could on Step 1. One thing Step 2 secrets is great for this test.

Just took it today. WTF?? That was the most vague, out of left-field exam I have ever taken. Half the crap doesn't even make sense. "Here's this 92 year old female with hypocalcemia and 103/23 BP. What color are her mother's eyes?" After rocking the NBMEs, the real deal put me back in my place. I'll be happy with a pass.

You could figure out what the question is about and what's going on in many cases. But knowing what the best next step was, or BEST this or that was, was just too vague and luck of the draw in my opnion. Felt like equally competent candidates could easily get a very high score or a very low score on any given day with this kind of test.

And yes, I saw those questions too. And a lot of the pictures I got were private genitalia problems. Don't know what to make of it...

WOW i'm glad i'm not the only one!! I took it yesterday, sooo many just plain bad questions. I completely agree with a lot of them being so vague you don't even know what's going the problem, and the others being sooo much information overload you have no idea where to begin.

I had one question where an intern was learning how to do aseptic technique but he didn't know how to do it, so the question asked who should I ask? the answer choices were like another resident, the nurse, the supervising resident, a fellow resident who knows how to do it, and the attending. like wtf you can ask any of them

any one got a score back today. I took my exam on July 2nd, and I am dying to see my score. My exam was just as vague as others have mentioned here, and will happy with even a pass although I did well on the NBMEs and UWSA exams.

My email came in at 5:56 am here in California. I got 244/99 which is above my predicted scores so quite pleased 🙂 I think you'll get yours today since we took it in the same week.
