Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

My email came in at 5:56 am here in California. I got 244/99 which is above my predicted scores so quite pleased 🙂 I think you'll get yours today since we took it in the same week.

Congrats Man, that is a great score. According to NBME all of the scores are usually up by 11:30 am EST, so two more hours of wait time.....

Word on the street is if your permit disappears after you take your test but before your eligibility period is up, it means you passed. This makes sense because if you hadn't passed, you *might* want to squeeze in a retake before your eligibility period expires. I've heard that people that haven't passed have reported that their form stayed up. Just hearsay, but encouraging.

I also heard that if your request document shows zero record, then it means they are uploading your score, mine is gone, lets hope its today..

Congratulations. Can you tell me what you used to prep for CK? Thx.

I took it yesterday and did not have that question. I had these two similar ones:

- 16 year old male has unprotected sex with another male. What do you do? I elected to screen for HIV/STDs.

- ******ed girl masturbates profusely and her parents can't get her to stop.

I found a lot of the questions just to plain suck. They're just bad. Some are just so vague you can't even tell which problem you should address. USMLE needs to hire USMLEWorld's question writers. They are much better. I rarely do a World question and feel like I'm not sure what I should be gunning for. And the pathophys "answers" for some of the questions were insane.

---

I need some serious peer support. Is it pretty common to not have a clue how you did? When I think back on the test, I know I got a lot right, but I keep thinking of questions that I got wrong too. And all the ones I just felt completely lost with. I previously stated that I failed this test before with a 165 without studying. I have to believe that with 10 weeks of preparation 8-10 hours a day and maybe 10 days off in that 10 weeks that I learned enough to bump my score up to a pass.

I feel so worried about it because when taking the test, I kept thinking, "this material is so random, that I wouldn't even know where to look to read some of this stuff."

I totally agree with your post! I had the ******ed girl masturbating question, too!!! I think you'll be OK as far as passing goes. I'm in the same boat as you, as I have no idea how I did! Good luck to everyone.

June 28th scores are just coming back today??? I took mine on 7/9 and figured today would be the day based on the third Wednesday after the exam rule, but that's not the case. Why does this honestly have to take so long to get back to us?? The anticipation kills me...

I did about 1400 questions in Uworld, always randomized untimed in blocks of 25-44. My overall average was about 70% correct, which was in the low 80th percentile compared to other users. I took USMLE in early July and got my score report today, 263/99. I have no USMLE step 1 score for comparision (I'm an osteopathic student). Overall, I thought Uworld was an excellent resource. At the time I thought the real USMLE questions were more difficult than Uworld, mainly due to the increased length of question stems. But it turns out Uworld actually underestimated my score. Either way though, the tutor mode is a great resource for studying for the real exam.

For the normal people out there. 202 on step 1(regretted only getting through 50% of uworld big time). 238 on step 2 6/29. did uworld x2, once throughout 3rd year and then again during my study break leading up to the exam. You won't remember most of the questions, granted some you will so there was some concern with my avg the 2nd time being artificially high (73%, high for me, but not for this thread). Had read step up to med during third year and taken notes on it, but never really reviewed it during core studying. My real board studying consisted mostly uworld and then usmle secrets. Echoing everyone else, that is all you need. I didn't have a chance to go through the 600+ i got wrong on uworld, and that probably would have helped and I really mostly skimmed through secrets. The key is reading the explanations and understanding what is being asked, took tons of notes on them, especially on ones you may have guessed and gotten right or used completely incorrect thinking, but still gotten right. I am still slowly going through the ones I got wrong right now for the upcoming comlex and only scoring ~60 which is demoralizing, but again, its about learning, not scoring high. Also, had numerous questions I got that I could relate the answer to either some lecture or a pt or rounds, that's always nice.
My progression was 185 on some 4 no break nbme exam our school gives us (ran out of time with 20 questions marked C). Then 220 on uworldSA about 8 days before. I guess I peaked at the right time. I'm slow on tests/add, finished last question of every section just as the time ran out, never had a chance to go back and look at any question again. Glad it worked out that way, no over thinking and pure gut instinct. No idea how people remember what is on their tests. It's a blur. I just suggest doing no more than two blocks in a row, this is a long test, but this is just based on my personal experience. I went 2-break-2-break, then breaks after every section. not taking a break after section 3 was a mistake for me as I just remember getting taken to town on block 4.
PDs dont care if your score drops by ~10 (esp if its like 246 to 236), unless your first score is a 210 and step 2 is a 200. Just had a talk by the PD of a big name EM program and he said how unfortunate that boards are relied on so much (but they are, and a good step 2 can be gold!) because all they show is your ability to do well on future MC tests and have nothing to do with your ability as a doc. If you did well on step 1like >230-235, there is no reason to take this now, or at least that is what the PD also told us, this is also for EM, perhaps if different for the ROADEnts type people.
You guys all know this stuff well, trust your knowledge and everything you've put into it. Good luck to all on the next part of the journey.

Step 2 CK: 264/99--Took the exam July 1, got my score today.

Step 1: 258
NBME 1: 242
NBME 2: 242
UWSA: 259
UW Avg: 80% on 2nd pass (after about a 6 month hiatus)
Kraplan avg: 62%

Thank the Lord, glad to be done with USMLE till residency!

Congratulations. Can you tell me what you used to prep for CK? Thx.

Thanks. I used Doctors in Training since I felt I needed some kinda program to help me get through the material. Outside of that I read MTB Step 2 twice, went through Uworld twice and skimmed through Step 2 secrets once. If I could change anything maybe I would have read Secrets once more again thoroughly since I felt like some questions I missed on the actual exam could have been answered by reading the book.

UWSA one month out: 235
NBME 2 3 weeks out: 238
Uworld first time through ~70%, second time was 80%+
Actual score 244/99
Step 1 238/99

Pretty average in terms of SDN but oh well I'm happy.

Rarely post, but frequently lurk and these forums really help me so heres my input:

Step 1: 274/99
UWorld: 81% first time through during clerkships, 92% second time
NMBE 4: 267 pre-studying
UWSA: 800 (>268) 1 day before

Actual Step 2: 276/99

Studied ~2 weeks. Used UWorld, skimmed Step Up to Medicine. First Aid for Step 2 OB/Gyn, Psych, and Peds chapters only. Hate to keep repeating what others keep saying, but UWorld is really all you need and is amazing. First Aid is a good refresher for some major concepts but kind of superficial. Ended third year with Medicine and Surgery so that probably didn't hurt.

Took the exam 6/29, dedicated study time for 12 days after M3 year.

Resources:
-DIT course during spring break, which involves Step Up to Step 2
-UWorld. Once through over the course of M3 year then about 2/3 through again during my dedicated study time.
-Step 2 Secrets

Stats:
Step 1: 236
Shelf exams: mid-80's raw on all of them
UWorld: 68% first pass, 78% second pass
UWSA: 242 (after DIT course, about 10 weeks out)
NBME 4: 590/251 (1 week out)
Step 2: 257 :hardy:

Blew my expectations out of the water, I was honestly just hoping to beat 240. I am so happy that I only spent 12 days studying so I could jump straight into M4 year. UWorld and secrets were fan-friggin-tastic, DIT was so-so but made me feel good about how much I knew.

just curious....very few people on this forum have reported step 2 scores below 240...why are the scores so high? .....for step 1 i thought high 230's and 40's was great considering the average match scores for competitive residencies like ortho are 235ish....is it easier to score high on step 2? do people visiting this website just so happen to have higher scores (plastics, derm, radio, ent gunners)? is the scoring system different for step 2?...i scored 237 on step 1 and just got a 253 on step 2 without any real changes in my study approach....extremely happy and satisfied, but unsure how to interpret the score ....any opinions?

and to support everybody else saying that UWORLD is worth it's weight in gold....I completely agree....the concepts tested and explanation of why each answer is wrong is critical to grasp in order to feel confident when answering questions on the real thing

Step 1 248
UWSA step 2: 232
Uworld 74% for 97% of questions
Step 2 263

I studied only Uworld nothing else just read the answers took 12 hr days did 4 sections and read through all answers making notes. Did that for 12 days straight and on the 13th day I reviewed the notes.

Quick words on encouragement. First I felt like **** when the test was done I thought I had screwed myself but it turns out that I did really well so just trust the preparation time you put in and don't worry about it once the test is done. Second anyone who is reading this that was told b/c of a bad MCAT you won't be great at Step exams (as is a rumor in the MCAT board on this site) don't worry the work you put in now is the work that matters the tests are totally unrelated (MCAT BS14 PS7 V7).

Finally thanks to everyone who contributes to this board it was a huge help and support in those 2 weeks of studying hell.

Edit: that regression line from100 cases of uworld vs step 2 in the sticky actually predicted i would get a 264 so take that for what its worth

I'll just say that:
NBME 4: under predicted my score by about >25 points
USMLE World Simulated exam under predicted my score by >30 points

I took Step II after studying for 5 days after taking these exams.

I totally agree with your post! I had the ******ed girl masturbating question, too!!! I think you'll be OK as far as passing goes. I'm in the same boat as you, as I have no idea how I did! Good luck to everyone.

wouldn't you jus ttell her to do it in her room....?

DO Student, hoping for allo EM

Step 1: 232/99
Shelf Exams: high 82 pads, low 71 ob, mostly 75-77
Uworld: 72%, did pads and ob during 3rd year, so slightly inflated
UWSA: 235
Took step 2 on 7/5, walked out feeling aight, thought i got over 230 but you never know, didn't have as much time or study as hard as I did for step 1, but just hoping for something above avg, goal was 250+ initially but after I walked out knew that wasn't going to happen

Step 2: 243/99

Can't really complain, not overjoyed but satisfied, hopefully will be enough for MD EM, and hopefully (fingers crossed) for MD EM in chicago, we shall see good luck to everyone else taking this exam

For the people who are worried about the Step 2 CK. I was one of the people who were stressed out after the test and regretted taking the test early given my great step 1 score.

Score today: 270+, UWSA and NBME 4 both predicted 265. Someone I know got a 275 with a prior step 1 of 240 and a UWSA and NBME 4 of mid 250s.

Step 1: 260
Shelfs: 90th percentile+ (90th was my lowest with 95 2nd lowest)
to give you guys an idea of where I was at before I started studying.
UWorld: 88% (2nd pass) mixed, timed

I studied 2 weeks (i had my medicine rotation last), and used UWorld and Step up to Step 2. I firmly believe that if you put in time during the school year, and you have medicine relatively late, you only need ~9-10 days to study. I got almost NOTHING out of Step up to Step 2, and in retrospect would only use UWorld. Know UWorld cold, and you guys will be good to go.

For the people who felt like they got killed by Step 2, there's so much anecdotal evidence to suggest the contrary. I honestly thought I got a 230-40s (which is a solid score, not to put anyone down, just 30 points below what my practice test was).

Just took Step 2 CK. Didn't feel too great after it was done. Does anyone remember how many questions per section or overall they marked or were unsure of out of the 352 questions? Also, how did this correlate to your eventual score? Thanks!

I took Step II on 7/25 and thought it was much more difficult than Uworld. The questions seemed a lot more vague and I was marking 10-15 per section. I maintained 80% correct on world, uwsa 256, nbme 1- 258 and nbme 4- 270 (one week before test). I felt confident going in, but coming out was another story. Hoping for the best

Ahh, the absolute worst thing is "remembering" a question and then looking up the answer and seeing you got it wrong! I had dinner with an ortho/spinal specialist last night and I was telling him about the few ortho questions I had, and the one that I didn't know how to answer. The answer was something he'd only seen twice in his 35+ year career. Another very appropriate USMLE question for a third year medical student.

I only want a 189. I don't care about anything else except to see that I passed. Damn this is going to be a stressful few weeks!

To those people who did well on their exams, did any of you feel like you gt rocked during the test and find out you did well later? I thought I was really ready. I did about 1300 uw q's 44 q blocks 1st time average 79%. I got a 268 on my uworld practice test a week before my test. But I really feel like I did badly on the actual test. I'm sure I'm just freaking out for no reason. I got a 254 on step 1 and just really didn't want to hurt myself by scoring lower on step 2.

I took the test yesterday. I thought it was not as hard as Step 1. It was in between NBMEs and UWorld in terms of difficulty. Most questions were straightforward and I felt that it was a fair test. If I get a bad score on it, it will be entirely my fault. I marked about 53 questions overall. My last NBME was 270, but I have been very worried ever since I took it thinking, what if I somehow messed it up? What if I get below 230? I'll be happy with anything over 240. But, I really wish I wouldn't worry this much. Now I have to wait at least 3 weeks for this! I am literally getting heart palpitations.

USMLE Step 1: 221
UWSA Step 2 CK one week into studying: 229
NBME 4 two weeks into studying: 251
USMLE Step 2 CK actual thing: 246

Primary resources: UWORLD + FA Step 2 CK
References: Step-Up Medicine, a little bit of Kaplan Q-book

ABOUT ME-
First time poster, long time lurker. This thread was such an inspiration during my studying for both steps, and especially comforting for CK knowing people were scoring near their NBME 4 on the real thing. Thank you, awesome people!
I'll start by saying I'm not the typical SDN poster -- I'm an average med student at an average med school in cali, average step 1 score, honored only half of my rotations. At the same time, I'm also not that hardcore: I can't study more than about 9 hrs/day, I love my reality TV, I study at the starbucks in the mall so I can go shopping after. I'm planning to do ob-gyn 🙂

PREPARATION-
My step 1 was a 221. It pains me just to write it. I have no idea what happened, I was scoring 240s going into that thing. So, you'd think I would be all amped and gunning to show 'em what I got for CK but I was SOOO burnt after third year. I had 3 weeks but could NOT buckle down the first week. Instead I slept, went to the gym a lot, and even took a trip. However, during my time on the beach that week I read FA Step 2 CK (half-heartedly) and also did the medicine chapters in the Kaplan Q-book. But essentially studied hard for 2 weeks. I had finished World x1 during the year, using it as a tool to study for each shelf (~72% overall average). Shelf scores were in the 80s. I reset the bank at the beginning of that 2 week study period. My studying basically consisted of blocks of 44 questions, random, un-timed, tutor-mode. I can't speak enough about tutor-mode. There's just something to be said about getting instant feedback on questions (wrong or right) then looking up that little bit in FA. Really solidifies concepts IMO. Ended up completing 75% of a second run-through, averaging 78%. U-World is gold, I don't really have to repeat that here. However, I'm one of those who can't just use a q-bank as a primary resource -- I need a text with which to visually place everything and somewhere jot down notes in an organized manner. For that, I'll say FA Step 2 CK is pretty good, like a 7/10. Some chapters are better than others, and they are missing some important diseases. Obviously it isn't the bible like it is for Step 1. I didn't use or even look at Secrets so can't comment on that, but lots of people say good things.

THE EXAM-
Leading up to the exam I felt pretty confident with that practice NBME 251 under my belt but for some reason still felt weak in a few areas (peds rashes, eek!) and was back-and-forth about whether to push it back a week. Decided ultimately to just take it on my original test date, mostly because I was sick of studying and wanted to PLAY. But the night before the exam I could.not.sleep. Worst thing ever. Kept thinking that I should have postponed it, should have studied harder, should have finished my second round of the U-WORLD bank, needed to redeem myself for Step 1 etc etc. Then started stressing about not being able to sleep and it's just a vicious cycle - you guys know what I'm talking about. Was able to get about 4 hrs of sleep (my baseline is 9 hrs) but let the adrenaline carry me through the day.
The exam itself was VERY FAIR in my opinion. I would say the average breakdown of a block is this: 30 do-able questions that are slightly easier than World, 10 questions where you'll be debating between 2 answers 😡, and 4 WTF types. Sometimes the WTF ones are ethical dilemma. Lucky for me I had a TON of ob/gyn, probably 5-10 per section, mostly fetal heart monitoring and STDs. The biggest bulk is medicine though, the approx breakdown of mine was resp > cardio > GI > everything else. Lots of resp is infectious stuff! Had about 4 heart sound questions, the sound resolution is awful so static can sound like a murmur but in some cases the stem was enough to give it away. I felt OK, but not great after. Mostly just exhausted and glad it was done. Like everyone, I perseverated on handful I got wrong, freaked out for like a day but you can't beat yourself up over those… just stay calm, especially if your practice exams have been decent.

In terms of length of stems, what people say is true: the screen is different so questions may appear longer but they aren't so different from world. Maybe 1 or 2 insanely long questions per block (you will resent these like none other in blocks 6, 7, 8). I'm a pretty fast test taker and always finished with 7-10 minutes left to agonize over my marked questions (~10 per block).

Overall, I'm very happy. This is not a phenomenal score by SDN standards but it's a dream come true for me. Hope this helps and thanks again to all those who have posted their experiences.

hey all, I got my score back this week and just wanted to share my thoughts.

step 1: 242

step 2 prep
nbme 2 pre studying: 218
uwsa form 1 after 2 weeks: 243
2 weeks later real deal step 2 ck: 257

uworld + secrets for resources
uworld: 67% through the year, 77% after reset
3rd yr shelfs: 80-86 raw score for all

I studied for 28 days total. 14 days about 3 hrs a day, other 14 days about 6 hrs a day.
I used uworld as my primary tool and it was great. I didnt remember too many ques from the yr which was nice so it was actually very useful.
Only book I used was secrets and I annotated in things I remembered from 3rd yr as well as random things I remembered from step 1.

The test was long and the vignettes were long. I used a lot more of my break time than I did on step 1 and I think that was a huge key.
Honestly, I think less is more with this test. Get uworld plus ONE review book. Dont spread yourself too thin with too many resources. Hit uworld hard and use the review books to fill the gaps. That will get you 90% the way there, the other 10% of the test is random questions you cant really prepare for and cross your fingers that your reasoning is close. Best of luck to all those studying.

here's my experience...

- step 1: 235
- 3rd yr shelfs: did awful on the first shelf of the year (68 raw score); 77-83 on the rest

step 2 prep
- used uworld during third year, starting after bombing that first shelf. got through about 45% before resetting it at the end of 3rd year
- also used DIT/Step Up to Step 2. Had ob/gyn as my last 3rd yr rotation, so went through all of the ob/gyn DIT lectures then.
- dedicated 14 days for studying between 3rd and 4th year. studied pretty much all day. in the first 6-7 days, went through the remaining DIT lectures at 1.5x speed. did about 6 lectures/day, but didn't stop and take the time to actually do all the quizzes; often just wrote the answers when the lecturers reviewed them. starting about day 3-4, did about 20 uworld questions/day. once i finished all of the DIT lectures (around day 7), i mainly focused on doing blocks of uworld questions with some occasional studying from the DIT study guide. went through 7-8 timed, random 44 question uworld blocks/day. tried to take notes and annotate step up based on the uworld explanations, but was very inconsistent about doing this. finished uworld by noon on day 14 and then re-reviewed some of my incorrect answers for a few hours.
- uworld avg: 76% (probably a little inflated since i'd gone through 45% of it during 3rd year)
- Step 2: 262

in retrospect, uworld is key. for people who want to supplement with a review book, but are unable (or prefer not to) go through it on their own, DIT can be helpful. like most others have said, at the end of the day, i felt that practice questions were the most important factor. do as many as you can and remember to review those explanations. good luck!

hey all,i am an FMG, preparing for step2 CK...

Our strategy is to provide you with challenging questions to push you to your utmost best for the actual exam. We believe that the creation of such difficult questions is beneficial for the improvement of your critical thinking, judgment, and test-taking skills. We strongly suggest that you use our Qbank as a learning tool, and not for mere assessment of your knowledge.

Please, forget about your average score and continue to learn from the explanations. You are doing it on tutor mode, you should improve.

As for what to do, there are plenty of posts in this thread that can answer that question.

I didn't do so well on Step 1, although I passed the first time. But I really want to do better. So I finished my third year, doing kind of blah on the Shelf Exams. Basically, I am not a good test taker by med school standards.

I decided to take all of August off to study for my exam in late August. I've already been studying for 2 weeks. During that time I read and highlighted Step Up to Step 2.

Then I started doing questions on UWorld. Four blocks a day, on tutor mode. My average has gone WAY up. I started getting 48% pretty consistently, and now I am at 60%, with 700 questions left. AND I HAVE A WHOLE MONTH LEFT!

Basically, I love USMLE World. A lot. I would bear its children if I could.

I am also excited because I think I am on pace to REALLY do well on this.

===================================================
My question is this. With a hair under 4 weeks to go, what would be the best use of my time?

I was planning on rereading the book, and doing all the questions a second time, making some flash cards.

I also exercise, which has reduced my anxiety over being a crappy test taker.

took the exam last wednesday, & just got back from a weekend of partying in Vegas... now that i'm sober here's my impression.

overall exam experience: its much more doable & logical than step1.
theres more gimmes too. i had 2-3 blocks that went well, followed by 2-3 blocks that could have swung either way if my guesses were lucky, followed by 2-3 blocks that kicked my butt. like every other neurotic test taker i looked up a few questions i remembered and got them wrong.. & beat myself over it. quite a few mechanism questions which was frustrating.

eitherway i can't change whats been done. i'll be happy with a pass.

i highly, highly recommend USMLEworld. do it as many times possible until you can effectively explain why the other choices are wrong and what you could change in the question stem to make them right. Of course, know your Internal Medicine stuff, its pretty much the entire exam.

My experience was very similar to yours. First two blocks I felt like "wow my studying paid off!!" Next few blocks "dang this is getting rough!" and last few blocks "Oh my god what am I going to do with my medical degree because I'm going to fail this stupid test!!"

I not only looked up questions, but I would make a quick note on the topic on the little dry-erase board and looked them up between breaks. My logic was since USMLE is such a crappy test that repeats questions (I had at least 3 sets of repeats) it may help. Of course it didn't help, but.. 😉

And since I took the test 8 days ago, every day a new question comes back to me and I have to run to my computer to look it up. I'm already at like 10-12 questions I know for a fact that I got wrong. And I missed a couple of "gimme" obgyn questions. Damn.........

🙂 Like you, I'll be happy with a pass. If I open my score report and it's 189 I'll sing songs of praise 🙂

Took the test on Monday. I thought all and all it is a fair test with a few screwball questions, but otherwise fair. More OB/GYN than I expected which was welcome because they were pretty straight forward. I actually got multiple repeat questions and I agree with other posters who said there are a lot of gimme questions. I'll post back in 3 weeks when I get my score.

usmle world average was 69%

Word on the street is if your permit disappears after you take your test but before your eligibility period is up, it means you passed. This makes sense because if you hadn't passed, you *might* want to squeeze in a retake before your eligibility period expires. I've heard that people that haven't passed have reported that their form stayed up. Just hearsay, but encouraging.

how soon does this happen? Do they take it away right after you take the test?
