Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Uworld Practice Test: 207 (first day, before studying)
Uworld Average: 65%

I read most of Secrets and did Uworld once, then redid my weakest sections a second time to end up with a 79% average and having completed Uworld about 1.5 times.

I planned to do a second practice test at some point, but just decided it would be a waste of time and would be very unlikely to help me, so I just did more UWorld.

I know I made a lot of improvement from my pre-studying practice test, but honestly I don't know what to expect.

Step 2 CK: 252

I'm just reporting what the USMLE people said...all scores between Aug 4th and Aug 25th will be reported today...if you took it later than the 25th, its possible you'll get your score but no guarantee....

Ugh. Took mine August 4th, got my score back. 229/99.

I accidently clicked the "special accomodations" button supposedly on my usmle scheduling application, and waited for forever waiting to receive clearance to actually schedule my exam. I didn't know they were waiting on me to send "proof" of my accomodation request. As a result, I had to register late and ended up getting an undesirable time (a few days after a 7 day vacation I already had planned). Took a UW test 3 weeks before my actual exam and got a 230, so I'm pretty disappointed that I declined in score over 2 weeks of studying + 1 week of vacation.

Just got my score back today and I am pumped! Hopefully my numbers can inspire others who have been in my position...

Step 1- studied my butt off but really struggled through the basic science aspects, in school and this studying. Came out at 201 🙁 Not pleased, but glad to have it over with.

Step 2 - took off 4 weeks to study and take the test in order to improve my score. I went topic by topic, reading First Aid and doing topic-specific questions with USMLERx and then doing timed random blocks, usually 1 or 2 a day was the most I could get through. I made sure to look over the ones I missed well and jotted down notes in an Excel document by topic, which I glanced over the day before the test.

I didn't get through as much of UWorld as I wanted to (did 58%) but my average was 65% (71st percentile) which predicted a 232 according to Medfriends, which I was happy with. I didn't buy a practice test but instead since I had so many Q's left to use just did 4 in a row without looking at the scores between a week before as my practice test. I can't remember what the score was exactly, I think it averaged out to 67% or so. I should say, I did have some low blocks in there (like low-mid 50s) the week before the exam so I wasn't sure I could trust the score, but some high blocks made me feel better.

The test itself was so, SO much better than Step 1. I took it away from where most of my classmates do, which for me was helpful. Unlike Step 1, I also took breaks after every block and I think this was key for me. I was able to decompress. I ate Clif bars and energy drinks all day which was helpful for me. The questions were not as elegantly written as UWorld but were not impossible. There were plenty that I didn't know but overall felt okay. All I can say about this is, do UWorld.

Anyway, so my score from that day .... 241 (99). Needless to say, I'm ecstatic! 😍 Thanks to everyone who posted their similarly inspirational stories on here; hopefully my story will help some others. You can do it! 🙂

Overall, I would say that doing well on shelf tests and Uworld were by far the best test prep tools.

As far as predictive value goes, many seem to feel that UWSA is more accurate than the NBME tests. For me, NBME 4 was pretty spot-on as well as the 100 cases predictive graph (predicted 260). Medfriends predicted between 248-257. I was definitely nervous trusting those tests, though, as they predicted a Step 1 score of 230-240. Still not sure what happened that day. Hopefully my CK score will help make up for it!

  • test day 8/20 : felt the exam was harder than uworld itself (anyone felt like it ? ), was struggling all thru the exam, most of the questions were weird .. like they made it though just to make it tough, vague questions and even vague answers u had to even think what they meant by some of the answers..really horrible feelin' .. was finishing on time and one or 2 sections were outa time.. all the sections were hard as hell. step2 aint a walk in the part.. felt it was much harder the step1.. on step1 i was let w 5-10 min at the end of each block..

Just to help reduce some of the inherent selection bias on SDN, I'll post my very average scores. I have terrible self discipline and never am able to make myself study long hours. I studied, sort of, for barely 3 weeks in August. I averaged 3-4 hours a day during the week.

USMLEworld 1st pass: completed 53% of questions on timed and timed tutor modes, cumulative average 57%
USMLEworld 2nd pass: hahaha yeah, right!

I also read most of USMLE Step 2 Secrets, which complements the question bank nicely. Those two are all I would recommend for Step 2 CK studying, with Step Up to Medicine as a refresher for topics you need extra help on. I read a little of Kaplan's Master the Boards and would NOT recommend it. It's very incomplete and has few diagrams/tables/usefully organized info.

I'm sure I would have done much better had I gone through Uworld twice carefully, but that would have meant nearly 4x the hours I put in...in other words, low yield for someone like me who doesn't need high board scores! I had a very nice August while studying: stayed in shape, kept my serum 25-OH-D up, got lots of sleep, ate good meals, saw my friends, built a new bike from parts, and took a weekend trip.

Scored well overall on shelfs, lowest was surgery at high 70-something percentile, with most scoring in the 80-95th percentile.

Dedicated study days for Step 2: 12
Mainly only used Step Up to Medicine to review details, UWorld almost all the way through in that time period, and selected sections of the Kaplan notes for the rotations I had either blown off or had the longest ago.

Predictive stuff:

NBME #4 10 days out: 253
NBME #2 4 days out: 258
FRED 89%
USMLEWorld finished 77% correct


Real deal: 258


Clearly, the NBMEs were dang accurate for me. I'm very happy with the improvement from Step 1- hoping one special program agrees with me =)

So my anxiety got the best of me when I didn't receive an email today. Called usmle secretary and she was able to tell me when my score would be released to me. To save you the work the number is 215-590-9700. Initially it's an automated system but just press zero and you'll be directed to a person. Took me less than two minutes. Hope this helps.

Edit:I took my exam on 8/12 and lady said about 150 scores will be released this Friday

just wanted to give back to the thread since I read many good advices here. I took my exam on 9/7 with 4 weeks of delicated study time (last 2 weeks were hardcore; first two weeks were so so)

Step 1: 230+
Shelfs: honored all except on family


Materials used:
-Step UP to medicine (used thru IM rotation and really liked it so, used it again x1)
-World Questions (used thru out the yr with 65% average, reset and did over with 77% average; I also took notes while doing questions)
-Used FA Step2Ck for ob/gyn; peds; psych, everything that SUTM didn't cover
-Secrets (1/2) for quick read last mins when I get bored...

Overall, World Questions were great and I would highly recommend it if you have time to go thru at least 2x. I didn't take any practice tests such as World Stimulated Exam or NBME bc I thought they would take too much of my time and too much work to go over another set of questions. By the way, i didn't take world questions timed but rather by subjects so it is easier for me to review.

Score today: 259/99🙂

Hello, after being a long time viewer, I wanted to finally post and contribute to this page.

I truly believe Uworld and UWSA are the best predictors of Step 2 CK scores. It helps also solidify information and fill in knowledge you would not find elsewhere which is critical for the exam. Here is my story for step 2:

Prep time: I studied for shelf exams throughout the year with average of 81%. I had my medicine clerkship at the end of my third year so medicine was still fresh when I took exam on Sept 3rd. I had dedicated step 2 ck study time of 3.5 weeks. However, in July when I was doing a sub-i, I would slowly listen to majority Kaplan lectures during that month.

Study Materials and schedule: For my three weeks prep time I used Kaplan lecture notes, First Aid step 2, Step up to medicine, Uworld and Kaplan lectures videos. I studied around 12-13 hours a day which included 2 Uworld Blocks and its explanation reading. I spent my first week reading FA. Next, I read non-medicine Kaplan lecture notes. I also had biostats notes from pre-clinical years I glanced at throughout. The last 8 days I read through step up to medicine (I read it twice during medicine clerkship so took not as long to get through). I would watch kaplan videos during workouts as an extra boost (conrad got me a few ?'s for sure). One week before exam I took UWSA and 2 days before I took practice USMLE practice ?'s.

Step 1: 258/99
Shelf exams Avg: 81%
UWSA: 268
Uworld random time 1st pass: 76%
STEP 2 CK: 267/99

UWSA was only 1 point off, so it is very good predictor.

It was a lot of work but it paid off. I feel if you want to do well, you should treat studying like step 1, if not more. Good luck to everyone who received scores today!

Otherwise, I worked hard all year studying for in-house and shelf-exams using review books (NMS Surg + Pre-Test, NMS Psych+ Pre-Test, Case Files Family Med + Pre-Test, Step-Up to Medicine + Pre-Test, Pre-Test Pediatrics, and Case-Files OB/GYN + Pre-Test). Received my score today: 253/99. I am quite pleased.

Study Materials: I studied very casually about 6-8 hrs a day, with weekends off for about 7 wks with a 1 wk vacation/break in-between and another 3-5 day break towards the end of studying for a move. I primarily used Step Up to Step 2 and USMLE World, with Secrets the last week for review. I only read each book once (didn't finish all of secrets), got through World 1.5 times (~70% avg my first pass). I definitely echo what everyone else says in that World is by far the most important thing, followed by Secrets and then everything else. If I were to do it again, I would have focused even more on World and tried to finish my second pass, because the subjects that I reviewed (medicine, ob/gyn, peds) I did best on, and questions I didn't have time for a second pass (surgery, psych) were my worst subjects.

Overall, I am happy with the score. I really wanted a 250+ because I am applying for a super competitive field (rad onc) and wanted to try to show significant improvement from my below average (for rad onc at least) Step 1 score, but definitely not gonna complain about a 246. I felt like absolute crap coming out of the test, and had a feeling that my score would be much worse than my practice tests, so only a 5 pt drop was pretty good news to me! Anyways, good luck to all of you still studying/waiting for your score!

I felt bad when I left the exam...didn't automatically report my Step 2 scores to programs on ERAS because of it. With that being said, most do feel bad- it's easy to remember the tough questions that you may have missed. I had 4-5 sequence questions and missed 2-3 of them during the actual test, I just took a deep breath and put them behind me (until afterwards!). Good luck to everyone- work hard, repeat major concepts ad nauseum, and take some time to relax.

this is a rebuttal to the people on here who say things like "world + first aid + step up to medicine is enough for 240". posts like that scared me, i only had 18 days, all i got through was most of usmle world (except psych and ob/gyn, which were my last two rotations) and left the exam feeling pretty bad. ended up with a 266. if you studied during third year it should really be minimal prep to do well. good luck!

I went 215--->251 today as well. 78% on UWorld. I'm pleased too. I used Uworld, Step up to medicine and Step up to step 2.

UWSA 10 days before my exam predicted my score EXACTLY

What I felt helped me the most (in no particular order):
- I had IM rotation last
- Finished UW during 3rd year
- 2x STUM during 12 week IM rotation, plus another 1/2 pass of STUM during dedicated study time
- Studying my ass off 3rd year and getting honors on most of my rotations
- 2nd pass of UW during 3 week dedicated study time

Honestly, I didn't think FA was that helpful. I thought Secrets had some good info, but most of it was in UW and I did not see a lot of the material that I thought was in Secrets that I was weak in. Honestly, UWx2 and working hard on my IM rotation last round (yielding 2.5x passes of STUM in 15 weeks) was the most helpful.

Good lucks to those still waiting on their scores. I was a wreck this AM waiting for scores.

Studied DIT, uworld, and step up. Did well on shelfs. Really left the exam feeling crappy. Score back today: 253. 😀. I definitely recommend that combo of study aids. Covered everything in 4 weeks. If I could go back, I would have done DIT for step 1. Worth every penny.

agreed... DIT is awesome.. I used it for both, it's a pretty penny but I owe a small part to wherever i match in residency to DIT.

Wow, as if I wasn't already thoroughly disappointed, reading this thread actually makes me depressed about myself and my lack of ability in doing well on these types of tests (which I will have to face for the rest of my life). I feel like I have to work my ass off just to pass and I feel so inferior to everyone I know...it is so embarrassing

Just to give my thoughts on the exam and echo what some have been saying....

I took the test on Thursday last week, and I don't necessarily think it was harder than UWorld, just not what I was expecting. It was different. There were a lot of ethics questions that I just had to make an educated guess on--even studying for those is a crapshoot. Also, just a lot of vague answers and presentations without the typical buzz words you expect to see. I had a decent amount of ob/gyn and psych, which was good for me. And definitely study that biostats stuff.....like an idiot, I completely blanked on calculating negative predictive value (how could I forget that!?!) And how do I have some much time left over at the end of UWorld blocks, but be cutting it so close during the real thing?? I think I just second guess a lot when it gets real.

Probably won't be getting my score till late September, but I'll post all my stats here for some perspective.

I was really banking on >230 and hoping for even better than that. I took the UWSA with 2 weeks of studying left and I had a 227, so I figured that would at least bump by 10 points. Total, I studied about 3.5 weeks and I had honored most of my 3rd year rotations. Can't remember my World average, I think it was around 65% on once through.

Not sure what went wrong and I hate to chalk it up to bad test-taking. And it doesn't help to see all these awesome scores, GUYS. Anyway, congrats to all, and if you're not >240, you're not alone. Also, I would encourage anyone with average or below average scores to post! I hate that SDN always skews to the rockstars.

Did almost exclusively UWorld (avg. of the last 20 blocks in the low 60s, IIRC). NBME4 understimated me. Took it 5 days out and only scored 216, wasn't thrilled about that.

Exam scheduled for July 25 but got cancelled due to site difficulties so re scheduled three weeks later (8/15) which I spent reviewing during the evening since I was doing my rotation most of the day. No self exams during this time period.

Yeah my thinking was that those questions probably counted for us as well. That is why they took so long to grade our test so that they could decide which ones were good, etc. But honestly who knows what they're up to haha.

What I did: Did Uworld all year long, did my best to ace the Shelf's (mostly 70th to 90th percentile). I took 1 month to study, I did the DIT course, read step up to step II, and did the Uworld bank once. Averaged about 70% correct.

Well if you took it on Sept 8,9, (10 and 11 were weekend) 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, then there would have been less than a full three weeks between your test date, and the supposed Sept 28th release date. Sept 7th would have been a full three weeks (21 days.)

I called last week, and the lady told me that that earliest they could release was three weeks after the test date even so even if your date was early mid-sept, the 28th would have been too early.

However, it seems there are people on here who took it on those dates I mentioned and somehow got their scores so idk if there was a clear cutoff.

Maybe tomorrow.

Also random question-are only the people who improve from step 1 to step 2 posting. It seems like there should be a national average with half above and half below or so. So if a lot of people got 220's on step one a good chunk should be lower and some higher. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

i took step 2 ck on oct 3 and after the exam i was just zoinked 😱, i seriously dont know what to expect....🙄
-all the sets were equally divided, however, i felt it was loaded with obs/gyn and peds
-there were 2 drug adds which were cake walk, far easier than the uworld
-quiet a few q's based on mechanisms
-uworld was of great help but again it wasn't as easy as i thought it would be

i just want to know
1) when will my results be out ?
2) my permit link has disappeared already, is it a good sign ??

Wanted to post since I used SDN a little for step 2 CK
Took exam on 9/15, got score back today.
Step 1: 255
Step 2CK: 260

took the test today.
Got 85%ile+ on three shelf exams
Got 90%ile+ on the other three

Got 255 on step 1

I averaged 75% for UWorld first run through
I did 1350 questions a second time through, averaged 82%

I thought the test was a lot harder than I was expecting. The questions werent hard....out of the whole test there was only 2, maybe 3 questions that I did not know the diagnosis. However, there were a lot of questions where I narrowed it down to two choices that both seemed right. This really disappointed me. Also, they have questions that are in series, and once you answer the first part, the second part of the question appears and tells you what the answer of the first part was.....I missed TWO questions this way where I knew my first answer was wrong, but I had to continue along the second part.
Lots of weird ethics questions. Like really weird. I cant even describe them right now, my brain is fried. I didnt think one area was emphasized more than the other, except with ethics being the exception. Will update with results when they are reported. Not super excited. Was hoping for 260+, now thinking I should be happy with a 240.....

USMLE Step 2 : 281 (holly ****, can't believe it !!!!!)

I used Master The Board Step 2CK, Kaplan Lecture Notes, went through USMLE World 1x only.
