Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

congrats on being done....i'm less than a week away from mine too!!

How would you say the breakdown of your exam was?? Lots of EKGs? Pics? or things you weren't expecting?? Other than doing world questions what do you suggest doing on the last few days??

Thanks for any advice you can give!!!

Hey man! This last week just focus on reviewing the answers/explanations for internal medicine systems you feel you are not top notch on in addition to weak peripheral subjects (obs, gyn, surg, ped, psych). What I did the last week was just practice random blocks on UW and really read the explanations in depth looking up things which are unfamiliar. That really helped my score on UW go up quickly... Breakdown Hmm... 75 percent of my exam was medicine related (int, ped, psych). There were a handful of EKG's, radiographs, and images. Peripheral subjects were very general and much simpler than UW... Medicine on the other hand could be quite challenging at times and reminded me of if not harder at times than UW...

Hey mohaven, do you feel that UW covers all the things that we need to know for the exam?

For subjects which were my strengths going into the exam UW was enough... For those subjects which I could not recollect by simply thinking about them I did UW plus FA. That way I got in a lot of practice questions and reinforce my weak subjects.

so i read this forum like 3 times a day while studying, and pretty much hated everyone because everyone seemed to get 250's and 260's and thought everyone was either a) lying or b) way smarter than me...I got 69% of UW correct and did about 90% of the questions. I never took more than 15 questions straight. always did tutor mode, did only 1 subject at a time (after I studied that subject from FA and CaseFiles IM) except for the last couple days when I did all subjects...

250's on CK (220's on step 1)

256. holler. (220's on step 1)

hey, congrats on the great score. How long did you study for?

I have CK in about a week and don't know what to believe when it comes to predicting a score. I'm averaging 62% on UW with about 2/3's of the questions completed, all random, timed blocks of 46 q's. Yet, on NBME Form 2, I got a predicted 263. Please help.

alright...step 2 is in 8 days. pressure is on...I got a 217/88 on step 1 (based on the other posters here that puts me in the severly ******ed category), but would really like to boost my score because I want to do ortho. So far I am 75% through with UW, overall is a 62%, but over the last 500 questions my average is a 65%. I am also doing NMS and have about half of that badboy to go. My brain reads this thread and can't seem to process how a % in the 60s on UW is going to translate into a 230 or a 240. Is this for real? I am studying ~ 10 hours/day so I don't really feel like I could be doing anymore. Anyone got any last week advice before I slay this bad boy and then get to laugh at all of my friends who put this thing off?

step 1: 264
step2qbank: 78%
step2nbmepractice: 91%
step 2: 271

I never really thought i'd get a score (scores) like that, esp. with that "score estimator" predicting more than 20pts lower. I did 65% of qbank, read first aid twice, and read the kaplan review books twice. I also slept at a holiday inn the night before... ok, not really.

Congrats man - the step 2 nbme practice, is that the free one?

thanks

I've been lurking these threads for the past few years and thought a lot of posts were bogus while appreciating the ones which were truly helpful. Here I am to contribute and say "IT CAN BE DONE!!!!!!!!!" you can improve from your step1 score!

step2CK: 3 digit= 246, 2 digit= 99

did not do the nbme forms... did almost all of u-world with avg in the 60's (i took these scores with a grain of salt and didn't let it get to me) READ A LOT on rotations--- this is the best preparation overall. it's not a crammable test- some things u just "pick up" on rotations. the actual exam was KILLER and i didn't know what to expect. very similar to u-world though..... I studied for about a month on vacation about 8 hours a day or so. I used First aid, Kaplan books on rotations, and step2secrets. just don't freak out and get rest before test day!

Got step II this Saturday... averaged 65% on UW and 75% kaplan qbank. I Wish me luck..I'll keep you posted 😳

I took my step II just over three weeks ago. I did all of UW and about 750 questions of Kaplan qbank. The actual test was somewhere in between in difficulty level. For my resources I used secrets which I went through about once, and then I took two nbme practice tests and focused on my weaknesses by reading FA for psychiatry and HY OBGyn. I had three weeks to study and I took one day a week off. My study weeks took place right after I finished third year. My clerkship grades throughout the year were usually around the low 80s raw score, with a couple in the 90s. For my three weeks of study time I worked hard, but focused much more on doing questions than learning new material. I felt that neither question bank gave me exact questions on my test, but they prepared me well and I would do UW over Kaplan if I had time limits. My opinion, like many have said, is that the most helpful thing is to do alot of questions.

Step I: 250
UW ave: 65% (total)
Kaplan Qbank: ave around 74%
NBME III: 229 (taken two weeks prior to my exam - :scared:!)
NBME I: 253 ( taken four days prior to my exam - luck?😕)
Released questions: scored around 92%
Step II: 261

I was just hoping to not drop more than ten points, so I am very, very pleased. Hope this is helpful.

Good luck, and please return the favor. Mine is Friday.

NBME #1 and #3 say I am ready... NBME#2 can get lost.

i just took step 2 and am worried because whenever i take the real thing i go more slowly and read questions more slowly and end up pressed for time. i would end up skimming the last 5 questions really quickly on almost every section. i was able to put something down for every question, but i just wonder how much being pressed for time is going to hurt me. is there anyone else who had a similar experience but did ok/well on the exam. i am really hoping to improve from my crappy step 1 score, and though i felt better about the questions i did spend time on, i am worried that i really sabotoged my score by being rushed at the end of the sections.

hi that's a fab score you got!! i have my step2 in 3 weeks and im terrified!!! can you pls tell me how to jump my scores???im currently getting 55-61 on UW and i really need to jump start for another 3 weeks.
plsssssssss help!!

This info is intended to aid all my fellow nonprodigal medical student brothaz and sistaz who need a less biased pool of data.

I'm in the middle portion of my class.

Studied one week between rotations. Had been reading FA CK for the previous couple months as a learning tool (not entirely review) on my medicine and peds rotations.

Overall, got through FA approximately three times, more on some sections, less on others. Did most of my q bank questions during that one week off, but had started a couple months earlier doing a few questions a day. Most of those were for my peds rotation though. Did all questions timed/unused, predominantly random sections most often 5-15 at a time. Obviously did more peds during peds. When I was focusing on given subjects, I would do more questions that were from my weakest topics. Read every word of every explanation for every question i did.

Test day felt brutal. I had my doubts when I left the test center. It was a total grind, no smoothe sailing that day.

USMLE world: 58% (did 30% of the q bank)
Step 2CK: 219 (got score back today)

Get's the job done. Great work to all you who earned such high scores. Might have been nice to have a month to devote to joining you. But it will be nice to spend it otherwise as I cruise through my last year of med school now.

LOTS OF LOVE

peace out 😎

I have a similar problem. I never get to read all of my questions. Fill em in, but don't always get to scrtinize. Happened on the MCAT, Step 1, all but one of my shelves, and the most on Step 2. Didn't read at least a half dozen, possibly near a dozen. I managed about average. By the way if anyone has last years data on what the average score was feel free to let me know.

And who is the wierd one for not finishing the exam, me or the test?

🙂

Hi Guys,

I have already received my score for step2 CK. I am not home, so My mother called me to tell me the score.

STEP 2 CK: 261 - 99

My UsmleWOrd score was 73%, unused, TIMED and ALL questions.
MY NBME form 1 score was 700.

I am very happy with my score, because I took the test with a viral infection and I was not 100%. Now, I am going to USA to do my observership and take my step 2CS!

I studied for step 2ck for about 10 days, doing only USMLE world questions and skimming step 2 secrets. I finished 75% of the questions with an average of 68% correct in blocks of 46, tutor mode. I took notes on all questions I got wrong and reviewed them each day - by the end of the 10 days I had filled almost an entire notebook.

Step 1 - 248

Did well on all 3rd year shelf exams using Case Files and Pretest:
Med - 84, OB - 91, Family - 86, Psych 99, Peds 90, Surg 79

NBME 1 - 250 - 10 days before exam prior to any studying, probably a bad idea because it really lowered my motivation to study
Free 150 questions - 91% 6 days before exam
NBME 2 - 263 - 2 days before exam
Took the entire day before the exam off - watched movies and went for a long run.

I took my test 6/29, got my score in the mail today:
Step 2 - 262

I am very pleased with my score. I recommend studying hard for shelf exams as the best preparation for step 2. The NBME exams were a good predictor of my step 1 score last year so I decided to take them again - I thought it was well worth the $90 considering all of the money I have spent so far in this process. I was told by many people to delay taking step 2 until after residency application were in because I did well on step 1, but I am glad that I didn't wait.

you only used case files and pretest for your shelf exams?! and you did that well?

Those are my raw scores, I have no idea what the percentiles are because my school doesn't release them.

I used Case Files and Pretest for every shelf, for medicine I also used MKSAP. For family medicine I had to use blueprints because there was not a Case Files book at the time. If I had presentations for attendings or specific problems to look up for patients I was following I used textbooks in the library or UpToDate/current journal articles.

Hello all I am new to this website and new to Step 2 talk...I really know nothing about it except that doing well during 3rd year rotations is the best way to do well on the real test. So, I plan to work hard this year...[hopefully]
I had a crappy Step 1 experience last month [219/91], did not test well on the big day...and really wanted a competitive score [230]. Anyways, I am not necessarily interested in doing ortho, derm, plastics but did have a few other things in mind - optho, ENT [I also like IM-GI]...I realize these would be tough with my score, but was wondering how much Step 2 can make a difference - can you really boost your candidacy big-time w/ a good Step 2 score? Also - is the average score and scoring situation pretty similar to Step 1? [ie 215-220 average, 230 is pretty good, etc?]. Ok, thanks for any info

So I've started using USMLEWorld and am averaging around 62%. What is a good average for a decent Step 2 score? This question source is great, but it sure beats you up!

Anyone else complete the USMLEworld questions and STILL feel like they got sucker punched on the real thing? (63% overall on UW, read 90% of First Aid)

I took it yesterday and felt like I was ready to duke it out with some dude and then he goes and pulls a knife.... 😡

For those of you who did well on the exam, did any of you feel this way when you left?

Step 1: 195

Studied 2 months using UW & Secrets.

Step 2: 252

Hey, awesome improvement! 😀 I'm hoping for some of the same good fortune on my Step 2, following a Step 1 <190. How did you do on UW (just for reference)? I'm doing about the average now, but trying to recover from earlier poor scores...

I signed up for USMLEWORLD and purchased crush and step 2 Mock Exam. I have FA for wards, Case Files in Surgery and Medicine, Blueprints in Medicine and OB/Gyn. Thinking about getting FA CK or Wards & Boards. I have 1 month to study during a light elective rotation... Starting out high 40s 🙁 to low 60s on usmleworld. Any suggestions on what order I should hit things, and which other review books I should invest in?

I took it the day before you did, had a 69% avg on UW going into it. Was getting like 70-80% this last week.. felt so comfortable going in there. Had the same feeling you did walking out. I think we will be okay.. just have to wait right.

Agreed! Though waiting patiently has never been my strong suit. Oh well, COMLEX in 2 days... I hope it turns out great for ya in the end. 👍

Doing USMLEWorld now and am taking boards in 10 days. I'm at 57% currently with about 16 more hours of questions to finish. I'm taking COMLEX about the same time you are gclax30. I wish ya good luck amigo.

Richie

Richie, I would love to hear what you think of USMLEWORLD as prep for the comlex. I have pretty much put all eggs in that basket..sounds like money would have been better spent on a six pack and a magic eight ball. Good luck and thanks.

I'll be sure to give you the 411 on my test experience when I take the darn thing, though I'm going to be taking the USMLE Step II also. I agree with the magic 8 ball concept though...COMLEX looks haphazardly thrown together.

I spent about 18 days studying for Step 2. In all, it was MUCH BETTER than studying for Step 1. For one thing, a lot of the information seemed much more logical, and I could actually remember it in the context of my own patients...this is so important, because in step 1 studying everything was so abstract and memorization-heavy. i can honestly say i did very little "memorization" for this exam; it was more "algorithms" and knowing what test to order, what treatment, etc. My advice would be to study TREATMENTS as much as possible because this is where we are weaker in general - a lot of the time on the test, I would know the exact diagnosis within the first sentence but the question would ask for something regarding "best next test", "associated genetic abnormality", "complication" or "treatment". I also strangely felt very good after studying, because I finally felt like things had come together and I was finally kind of growing into my own as a future doctor. Silly, I know, but still.

I studied about 6-10 hours a day. The first week, I went through all of First Aid, three sections a day, highlighting and taking notes. I only did 1 or 2 question blocks at most during this week. Then the second week, I read some of Step 2 Secrets and did about 2-3 question blocks a day. The final week or so, I essentially plowed through 4-5 question blocks a day to finish up everything 1 day before the test. I started out TERRIBLE (i.e. low 40s) and by the end my average was ~ 65%; toward the end I was getting tests with averages in the high 70s and low 80s. I took most of my tests in tutor mode, taking lots of notes and really trying to learn. toward the end of the study session i did a lot more timed just to make sure I could handle the time pressure. I took the night off before the test and just went over some high yield things. Of course I could not sleep and ended up getting about 2-3 hours. This I would not recommend.

The actual test was pretty tough, I won't lie. I was disappointed walking out of the center and nearly burst into tears - I had felt a LOT more confident going in than I did coming out. It was so completely frustrating, because for nearly every question I KNEW what was going on, knew the diagnosis, knew exactly how I would proceed, etc. but the stupid answer choices were just off the wall, or I would narrow it down to two, and then keep second-guessing myself and changing my answer. I feel terrified because I changed my answer on so many of the questions, which always leaves you with a bad feeling. Sigh. It is so terrible that this is the way they're going to assess my clinical knowledge. 🙁 🙁 In terms of difficulty, I would say certain questions were definitely along the lines of UsmleWorld - in fact, as other posters have suggested, there were about 5-6 that I didn't even read because they were almost verbatim from UWorld. That was definitely helpful. I would say the ethics and epidemiology questions, which nearly made me want to break my computer when I was taking them in USMLEWORLD, were 10000 times easier on the real exam (i.e. what is sensitivity? specificiity? 🙂 ) Oddly enough, I feel like I got at least 5 questions on the real exam that were repeats of each other, which would have been nice if I'd known the answer. Trauma was still hard (as hard if not harder than USMLEworld)....

Anyway, I'll post my scores when I get them back. Just so you know the numbers:
Step 1 score 229
Shelfs: terrible in the beginning to okay - highest was 94 in Psych, 88 internal med, 78 OB/GYN, 68 surg (ouch), 72 FP, 70 Peds

Good luck to all and if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me. 🙂

Got my scores back at last...I made a 250/99!! Was absolutely ecstatic. If I can raise my score, heck, anyone can. 🙂 And don't let how you feel on test day weigh you down. I sincerely thought I could have failed the test with all the questions I wasn't sure about.

Yay for the end of 9-hour long standardized tests in medical school! 😀

I took that beast on August 3rd. It was tougher than people made it out to be. I didn't feel that great when I left the test center - actually felt pretty crappy. There was definitely a lot of electrolytes, peds, trauma (every 5th question was 35 yo female taken to the ED after MVA as unrestrained passenger, etc...) and a whole truck load of ob/gyn (every 4th question was 28 yo G2P1 presents to...). I felt completely unprepared for the ob/gyn. Other than that, there was reasonable balance of third year stuff, except they were fairly light on the neuro.

I studied for 3.5 weeks fairly lightly (6 hrs daily at most). Still was able to watch a bunch of TV, see several new movies and get outside on nice days. The first week I started doing kaplan Qbank and realized that I was not going to get through it AND UW, so I switched to UW. I didn't get through a lot of UW and in retrospect, I should've just stuck with UW from the beginning. I read secrets and maybe a total of 15 pages in FA. Read about 100 pages of B and W as well. I just couldn't concentrate (just finished 3rd year and 2 4th year sub-Is). I definitely recommend taking it as close to the end of third year as possible if you care about doing well.

Stats:
Qbank - 70.2 % (finished 42% of ?s)
UW - 67.8% (finished 68% of ?s, no repeats, timed blocks of 46)
NBME free exam - 45/43/41 (93.5% = ~256), taken about 2 weeks before exam (bad idea - lost what little motivation I had)
NBME form 1 - 680 (~254), taken 4 days before exam (again bad idea, but I freaked b/c I had a string of horrible scores on UW)
3rd year shelf exams (in order, raw score only) - Psych 86, Ob/gyn 76, IM 83, FM 79, Peds 85, Surgery 81
Step I - 254/99

I'll post my results when I get them. Thanks to everyone on this board, which I was completely obsessed with.

Had 11 days to prepare. Did USMLEWorld. Read First Aid once. Read parts of Boards and Wards. Got lots of sleep. Ate a banana between each block.

I also used QBook and the NMS Step 2 question book during 3rd year.

Shelf exams: high 70s early in the year, improving to low 90s at the end.
UW: 69% cumulative, averaging mid-70s towards the end.

Step 2CK: 261

I thought I would give some hope to everyone that doesn't get a 250 on step 1. I studied for 4 weeks, went to the beach for a week of that so I don't know if you can call what I did there studying. I did USMLE world, NMS question book, and read through Crush for Step 2.

Step 1- 205
Class Rank 1st and 2nd year- bottom half
Shelf Exams- Peds 92, Medicine 88, OB/Gyn 90 (raw scores, I don't know percentiles)
USMLE World- completed 75%, averaged 60%
NMS Book- averaged about 75% on 50 question blocks
NBME form 2- 224 (4 days before the test).

Step 2- 244/99 thrilled to say the least.

I am a horrible test taker, but I think I have figured out that the key to tests like Step 2 and the shelf exams is to just do questions questions and more questions.

Good luck all!

I checked this thread a lot while studying, so here are my results. I'm an average joe type of student, probably somewhere in the middle of my class. Did better during 3rd year than the 1st two years. Generally am not a great test-taker and I really felt I needed to improve over my Step 1 but had very limited time to do it. I skimmed 1st Aid for Step 2 CK during my last rotation.

Step 1: 214/87
Shelf exam raw scores: Surgery and Ob - mid-70s, Medicine, Peds, Psych - mid-80s (improved once I did tons of questions to prep)
At the end of 3rd year, my school gave us one of the NBME practice tests and that predicted a 202.

I studied for 16 days doing only USMLEWorld, did about 3-4 46 random question blocks, reviewed all of the answers. Finished 95% of the questions, averaged around 64-65%.

NBME form 2 - 222 about 1 week before the test.
Step 2: 242/99

I am so happy with my score. I thought the test was REALLY hard the day I took it and was shocked I did so well. The key for me was tons of questions and it really worked. Good luck.

I hate to post numbers (and never have before)...but I figured since I used the thread I should give back...

I studied using Boards and Wards (read twice), Step Up to Medicine (read once), and UW. I mostly focused on UW. I took 2 weeks of vacation time and I studied for 10 long days incl. a weekend during which I hardly studied...so really more like 8.5, I guess...gosh, it seemed like a lot longer at the time! I had just come off an intense rotation with hardly any time off and q4 overnight call--I didn't study (beyond my patients) during that month. I finished UW and in total averaged about 63-64% overall, more like 67-68% average the last few days of it (I don't actually remember the real numbers--even towards the end it was variable from test to test). After I finished it, I spent one day reviewing/re-taking some of the incorrects in select subject areas, which I think was a good use of time in retrospect. We take shelf exams during 3rd yr rotations. I took it after 2 months of 4th year electives.

Step 1: 228
Step 2: 246

Good luck to everyone!

Had the exam 7/7/07, recieved score 8/08/07

studied 4-5 weeks

uw 59% first time through mostly tutor, nbme 1 229 (4.5 weeks) , nbme 2 231 (3.5 weeks) nbme 255 (4 days before)

step 2 ck: 258/99

biggest advice: USMLEWORLD. learn pediatric immunodeficiency, trauma, general psychiatry, and lots of different ob/gyn (i read case files ob/gyn). Also did step 2 secrets and had just finished medicine rotation which helped. g'luck everyone.

got some good advice from people on the board so thought I would post my experience.

studied for about 4 weeks. did 100 world questions in the morning and went through them carefully (total 4 hours), read step up to medicine for about 2-3 hours a day (loved this book), then read either kaplan ob/gyn, peds, psych, or surgery in the evenings. (would rotate so one day read ob and psych, then next day would read peds/surgery)

World average: 59%, with about 66% last 10 or so blocks.
NBME 1: 235 (2 weeks before)
NBME 2: 241 (3 days before)

Step 2 CK: 244/99
Step 1: 225/91

thanks for all the help.

my main advice is to really understand world concepts, stick to what works for you and try to practice a couple 8 hour tests with 1 hour of breaks just to get a feel for what the day feels like.

Though it seems like for the most part, all of you were scoring in the 60's on UW....anyone out there who was scoring in mid 50's that did well on the real thing? With two weeks left, I have been fluctuating in my scores between 50's and sometimes 60% with my average being a 54% right now and I'm wondering how that will translate, although I am hoping to keep improving.
Also, is there a lot of room for improvement in 2 weeks?

I was wondering the exact same thing. I have an overall average of 55% and I have done about 60% of the Q's already 🙁

part of the problem with the percentages on usmle world is that people do questions multiple times, and it effects the percentages. I myself went through it once and got 59% and then again at 80%. So don't worry too much about the number. Make sure you learn the information, that's what uw is for. if you want a true scale of your progress do the nbme's.

Aphrodisiac,

Did you do ALL of the UW questions twice? and did you find that helpful while you were taking the real exam?

i did it that many times because i started uw during medicine rotation and i forgot the questions i did initially. i dont think its useful to do it twice within a short period of time. i guess it depends on how well you retain information.

Step I: 218
UW ave: 60% (total)
NBME I: 237 (taken 3 days prior to my exam - luck?😕)
Released questions: scored around 87%

Step IICK: 240 (99)

I've always struggled with standardized tests, so this was a huge accomplishment for me. And using UW, First Aid, and Crush Step 2 were my main study guides. I read FA over at least 3 times, studying over 3 wks, and focusing on a few sections a day until i finished it in 1 wk while doing corresponding UW questions from those sections after studying, and always doing a random timed block every day to get practice jumping concepts too. That method x2 took up my first 2 wks of solid studying (8-6pm), then the last week, i just looked at everything and finished up the rest of UW random and timed blocks. I thought NBME1 was very predictive of my score, as seen above, so I didn't feel the need to dish out another 45 bucks for another test. I would recommend a lesson of sticking to 1-2 sources and seriously doing plenty of questions every day. UW sometimes had harder questions, some were easier. I had a few hard blocks on my test day that I never really went over that much in UW, but know your non-IM subjects well too (peds, ob/gyn, psych) b/c it has a good amt of coverage on exam. That's prolly where I lost most of my points I felt. But nonetheless, know what you know well, vs knowing a little of everything and not remembering enough detail (my downfall for step1 with too many sources). Good luck for all those taking it soon!!
