Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

This is for all the normal people out there...

I am an average medical student. Standardized tests have never been my thing. Studied pretty hard for step I, ended up with a 217/88. Not great, but for someone who sucks at MC tests, I was fine with that. I want to do ortho however so I studied my balls off for step 2. Finished 95% of UW, ended up at 62%. Read through FA twice, Crush once and secrets once. I also did the NMS question book (tough but really good by the way)...I was praying for a 230+. Had I gotten that, I would have been doing cartwheels. Shelf scores: (OB -60, Peds- 65, psych - 64, Surg - 53 1st try <ouch>, 65 2nd try, FP - 71, medicine - 80) Like I said, MC tests are not my thing, but I was encouraged by my medicine score so I took an easy first rotation as an M4 and studied til my eyes bled.

Scores came back a week ago: 226/93. Still stings a little because I was so close to making it happen. In any event that's my story, even if you suck at MC tests, this thing is doable...I wish I could be like everyone else here and study for 4 hours a day for 10 days and then be disappointed with my 258/99. Good luck to everybody studying...it's bad, but nowhere near as bad as step 1

I understand your frustration, but I think you did great overall. You were above the mean on both step scores. Are you dissapointed b/c you were thinking of applying to derm or something?

Ortho is huge on needing to do extramurals to get an interview. Check out the Charting Outcomes in the Match thing - a lot of people with lower scores match ortho. They really want to know you're decent to work with.

Thanks for posting your scores for us average (or below) folks! All the 260's on here make me feel like an idiot sometimes.

Thanks nykka...i'm not super disappointed. I just felt like with how hard I studied and what people were getting on here, I would bust through the magical 230 realm. Plus I want to do ortho, so the higher the better, but you are right, my score is what it is. Good luck with 4th year stuff...back to the ERAS application, the fun never ends around here...

USMLE Step 1 217/88
USMLE Step 2 240/99

USMLE World: 60% (100% complete 1 time through)

NBME 2 one week before test:227

Ive been following these threads during my step 2 study breaks and they have provided helpful information so I thought I would contribute to the thread. I took 1 month off to prepare for step 2 because I wanted to improve on my step 1 score. In addition to USMLE World I completed the NMS question book with 20 50 question blocks. The explanations were long but were helpful. Read First Aid once and Secrets once and selected chapters out of boards and wards. The key is not to get frustrated with USMLE world scores. Use it as a learning tool, not a measure of your knowledge because the questions can get picky. Good luck to all who are studying!

Hey, thanks for posting. I think this kind of thing is helpful to keep people in perspective that not everybody is getting is getting a 258 with doing a handful of questions and eating a good meal the night before.

I am probably also an average med student, maybe below. I have been decent with standardized tests such as the MCAT, but I guess not so much in med school. I studied a month for Step 1 with all sorts of review books and got 200 - should have done a question bank online probably.

Your shelf scores are interesting, I think, because the widely held conception in our class is that Family shelf is really tough and most people get 60's or so, at least I did. Weirdly, surgery was one of my best ones in the 76 ballpark, but other than that, mostly all 60-70.

Anyhow, I will be happy to post my Step 2 when it comes out to give more average (to below avg) perspective. I did 100% of UW questions and read boards and wards and a little bit of other stuff. I, for one, will be executing a fist-pump if I break 210. Any more than that, and you can imagine the celebration will be proportional. 200-210, I will probably nod solemnly and shrug my shoulders. Under 200 and there will probably be some cursing and/or weeping. Weirdly enough, when we took the cumulative shelf at the end of second year, I got the score that correlates to exactly 200 also, without any preparation and actually drinking the night before, in comparison to my real Step 1, exactly the same, having studied exclusively for 1 month.

I've been a quiet observer of this page for a long time. I looked at this page almost everyday while studying for step 2 for motivation. After taking step 1 and getting my results back I felt like an idiot. I constantly heard of classmates of mine scoring 240s, 250s, and 260s while I had done extremely poorly. I limped into my third year with my score constantly in the back of my mind. After completing my third year I felt like I had gained a world of knowledge and felt that I could obtain a decent step 2 score. After taking a year of shelf exams and consistently scoring above the national average I though a 225 or 230 was a possibility especially after reading this page. I got my scores back last week...

step 1 - 198
step 2 - 246
USMLE World Avg. - 65% after completing 78%

I just wanted to thank everyone for posting info about how to best prepare for this test. I will just echo what everyone else has already said WORLD, WORLD, WORLD along with one or two reading books. It closely approximates what you will see on the exam. To anyone who may be discourage as I was just know that this test is a test you can do well on if you study smart (aka use good study sources like world) and put in the work. I studied for 10-14 hours a day for 23 days. I read first aid twice, read most of secrets, and did 78% of world. Good luck to those of you preparing for the exam and congratulations to the rest of you for being done with step 2.

All random, unused questions, with 100% of usmleworld completed, I netted like 62% average. Got my step 2 scores back:

246/99

I think it is key to learn something...anything...from every question. If you got it wrong, find out why, and write it in your First Aid for the CK book (or step-up). If you got the questions correct, still you should go over the answer choices and explanations. The real thing is in fact much easier than usmleworld.

Ok, so here's how I studied for step 2. The bulk of my studying came from USMLE World. I thought the questions were very analogous to the real test. My % correct on any test would vary from the high 40's to the mid 80's so don't get discouraged when you have a few bad tests. I took most of the tests in study mode but some were timed. I also used First Aid for IM pretty extensively. I pretty much went back through all of it. I also skimmed Boards and Wards. I had just finished Peds and OB/Gyn as my last 2 rotations so I didn't study them extensively. But again most of my studying came from World - I took some notes, but not many - and looked up things I missed or things I didn't know. I studied for about 4 weeks - the first two weeks I went for 5-7 hrs. a day - the last two I only studied 2-4 hrs. per day. Here are my scores:

USMLE world: 69% total correct - did 100% of the Q's
Free USMLE Step 2 Practice test: 89% correct
[FONT=trebuchet ms, Arial, Helvetica]Paid NBME CCSSA Self-Assessment Test: Correlated score of 266 (taken 1 wk before step 2)
Step 2: 258/99 (by the way my step 1 was 240/97)

I just got my score back yesterday and was shocked that I did so well. The test was easier than step 1, but still a grind. From what I've seen on this web site and what I've gathered from my classmates you can pretty much bank on raising your step 1 score at least 5-10 points and many people have raised it much more than that. Hope this helps anyone trying to gauge what they may score on step 2. GOOD LUCK!!

I think you have to be careful when saying this...the "standard 10" increase is probably a function of studying relatively hard for CK and taking it with proximity to 3rd year core electives. This demographic of testers likely score higher (and seems to be much higher) because many people wait to take CK after they have applied or even after having matched. So many people just don't care about killing this thing and consequently, I feel that the scoring is therefore inflated for those who invest time in preparing (considering that many people do not). This is nothing like step 1 where everyone is going for as high of a score as possible. Something to keep in mind.

That's true. My statement is made on the assumption that at least a moderate amount of studying will go into step 2. I do think it helps immensely to take step 2 soon after finishing 3rd year while everything is still fresh - I'm sure if I waited 4 or 5 months after finishing I would have forgotten a lot. However let me say that for those deciding when to take step 2 and how hard to study - my advice is take it early and at least study moderately hard for 2 weeks and you will almost certainly raise your step 1 score. And for those who "don't care about killing this thing" it won't really matter what their score is anyway - my post was really aimed at those who will be studying for and want to do well on step 2.

I find it interesting how this site can actually make you feel bad about getting a 99...go figure.

My data:

Step 1 - 254/99
Step 2CK - 249/99
Step 2CS - Waiting impatiently
UW - 68% - 100% completed (High 50's in beginning High 70's at end)
NBME Form 1 - 600

You shouldn't feel bad about getting a great score....esp. if you worked your butt off. Also, I don't think you feel too bad b/c you are posting your score. I think there are just a lot of us (most don't post) that also work our butt off but don't score as well or make huge improvements from step 1 to 2 and those post inspire a lot of us.

Anyone know the turn around time on getting scores back? I'm taking Step 2 at the end of the month and hoping my scores will come back soon enough to help give me a boost for interviews.

Step I 226

Step II study - Kaplan text books once over cover to cover, most of First Aid for Step II, completed about 15% of Kaplan Qbank. 20 days total study time, all day every day.

Step II 254/99

So I also used this site before step II so I thought I would share, also I got be score back in about three weeks which was awesome.

Step I 218
Step II 248

I used world with an ave of about 61% and crush, sutied for about three weeks for ave of 4 hours a day. Hope this helps, I am an ave student so it really is possible to improve on an ave step I score.

This thread continually gave me hope as I prepared for CK. This post is for all less-than-average students. I'm in the bottom 1/4 of my class, and generally do a little less than average. Here's my data:

Step 1: 191
Kaplan Qbank: 69% right overall, 100% of the Q's
UW: 60% right overall, did 57% of the Q's, scores toward end were 65%
NBME Form 1: 490 (215)

Step 2 CK: 226/93

I know this isn't the 99 that so many people here post, but I am bouncing off the walls with having improved 35 points, and scored higher than my goal of 221.

I studied about 6-8 leisurely hours each day (frequent interruptions, etc), used Boards & Wards, Step 2 Secrets, Kaplan Qbank, and World. Studied for about 6 weeks, mostly just weekdays.

Hey guys, since I spent a lot of time reading these posts, I thought I'd add my scores to the mix.

I am a good student, with B/B+ avg, middle of my class.

Step 1 = 214
USMLE World = 54%, studying and doing questions by subject in timed, new 46 question blocks. I also went back thoroughly over each question set after trying them timed, spending 2.5-3hrs on each test reading and writing points to each answer paying special attention to at least the "Educational objective." I used most of Crush Step II and Blueprints of psych and OB/GYN, some of medicine blueprints on less well covered areas by Crush. I spent 3 weeks doing it full time, then 4 weeks averaging 4 hours per day. The last 3 days I read over my notes made over the 2,100 questions I did.
Step 2 = 221

There are very few posts for the majority of us middle of the road med students, so I thought I'd give some encouragement. Everyone does not make 240+.

Good luck everyone!
🙂🙂

This too is for those "less than average" students.

First 2 years of med school= bottom 1/4
Step 1= passed after 3 attempts 🙁

Step 2= 229/95 😀

After my complete humiliation on step 1, I refocused myself during 3rd year and earned A's in every course except for a B in surgery. My shelf scores were all 74-79.

A lot of prayers were answered tonight- thank you Jesus!

can u share ur study methods?

Got my score

step 1 215
usmle world 65% ( I did it by subject, I learn better that way)
step 2 251/99

Honestly I am suprised. I felt good about the test, but did not expect a 251, but I'll take it.

All I did was secrets and USMLE world- by subject. Took notes on each subject and then the week before the test I re read secretes and the usmle world notes. During the test there was very few questions that did not seem familiar in topic. I studied for 3.5 weeks,8hours a day. Good luck everyone.

Ah sweet, I am pretty stoked.

Step 1: 200
Step 2: 222
(UW overall average 52%, average of last 6 56%, did all 2209 questions that were available at the time.)

It is too early for me to be really appreciating this news, but I am jazzed to have put a little distance between myself and the 200 mark. Wooo!!

👍👍👍👍

Step 1: 227/91
Step 2: 248/99
UW: 69% but I repeated most questions so this is falsely elevated
I studied for 4 weeks and did mostly UW and Step Up to Medicine.

Good luck to everyone.

Top 20% of my class, almost solely due to doing well during 3rd year, as I was somewhere in the middle during my third year.

Step 2: 257/99
USMLEWORLD: just under 70% correct total after doing all the questions. I did solely subject-specific tests because my brain thinks much better that way than skipping around doing random questions.
Kaplan: just over 70% correct, with doing about 1/2 the questions in the same format.

Good luck

Hi, I've never posted on these forums, but I found it helpful to read when I was studying for Step 2, so I told myself no matter what I got, I'd post after I got my score.

I studied hard for my 3rd year shelves in medicine, surgery etc, and then right after 3rd year, I completed a 2 month medicine subI. Right after subI, I studied for 3 weeks (the last week was useless) for Step 2. I used First Aid CK, Crush Step 2, and USMLEworld. The UW questions were long and detailed, but I tried to just learn something from every question.

NBME 1 before studying: 217
NBME 2 after 3 weeks: 247

Actual Step 2: 262/99.

I didn't expect that, so I was very surprised. I think having an intense subI helped a lot with the medicine questions. I also think First Aid and USMLEWORLD helped me a lot.

I'm NOT a great test taker, this is the first test i've actually done well on, so it IS doable!!

What a great day! Got my score and it's the first time in my life I'm actually happy with my score!
I did 26 points better on Step II than I - definitely a different style of test and there is huge potential for people who did so-so/average on Step I to really excel on step II!!!

Step 1 - 250
Step 2 - 261
UW - 69%; Did about 70% of the questions, all unused questions, random blocks of 46.
Primarily used FA, referenced Step Up to Medicine on occasion. 3.5 weeks study time (took CS 4 days later).

What did you get on step I if you don't mind my asking? Congrats by the way. Me, I'm shooting for a 230. Hopefully I'll get that and be ecstatic.

Hi,
Thanks! I got a 229 on Step 1. I think what helped me the most was that I studied really hard for my 3rd year shelves, so step 2 studying had lot of familiar topics.

But I've always had stamina problems with super long tests, but it can be done on Step 2!

hey guys, first of all i really appreciate everyone posting how their usmle world scores matched up with step II. when i was going thru world and getting high 50s, low 60s, it really chilled me out.

anyways, i'm really unlike most of the posters here. i like medicine and all, it's cool, science is yay, but there are more important things to me. i didn't study for step I and it hurt me, so I knew step II had to be better. my shelfs were average at best, because i grew to hate studying. i did world, about 80% of questions, final score of 61%. i did subject based, as in i would study a subject in secrets and/or boards and wards, then do 50-100 questions in world on it, then move on. about 4 weeks total studying, maybe 4ish hours a day. in the last week i did the practice usmle questions. difficulty of test was somewhere between world and the usmle free practice imo. predicted score from usmle world using score estimator was 217, from usmle practice 218. blah. with a ****ty step I i wanted better than that but i was out of time.

test was hard, long. the only thing i remembered were the buzz word questions i got wrong. scores back 27 days later. 236, 98. i was extremely happy about it. extremely.

synopsis: secrets 1-2 times, boards and wards casual, world 80% but notes taken ocd-style on the answers. 4 weeks x 4 hrs a day. bad preclinical knowledge base. 236. study hard, it can be done, even by idiots such as myself.

Hey y'all!

So I've been reading this thread for encouragement while studying for step 2. I finally took the test and am anxiously awaiting my score. I did however want to add my $0.02. When I sat down at the testing center to take the exam I decided to check and make sure my sound was working instead of simply skipping the review. And so at that point, I realized my computer had no sound. After about 2-3 minutes, I finally got the proctor's attention and she didn't know what to do. She 3-5 minutes later found the head of the testing center who turned my computer off and told me that he was going to file a report for a testing abberation for mem but that shouldn't affect my score. He restarted my test (without getting the time back) on a new computer and what do you know it, my earphones didn't work on this computer. It took another 5-10 minutes for the proctor to figure out how to make the sound correctly function on the second computer.

All in all, I wasted the entire 15 minute intro section on making my sound work. It took me the first 20 minutes of the first block to calm my nerves after that and really focus on the exam. With the abberation report, it's also possible my scores will be delayed.

My advice: Check the sound as the very first thing you do. If it doesn't work, try once to get it fixed. If it still isn't fixed, live without having sound. I think I would have done better overall had I just taken those questions without sound and guessed than been rattled during the first section. Hopefully my score didn't suffer too much.

Hood: congrats on your excellent score!

Zondeare: sorry to hear about what happened. i hope your score didn't suffer because of that unfortunate incident. my exam's coming up and all these talks of malfunctioning hardware is making me feel a lil worried. i'm even entertaining the idea of maybe signing up for a practice session at the testing center just to fix those small problems before the real deal..

anyway, you guys are done now, so you should celebrate regardless of what the heck went down at the testing center :hardy:

thanks jabez, don't freak out too much about the technical issues. it's only 2-3 questions max, and usually the media will confirm your suspicion of the diagnosis, because the vignette lays out a very classic scenario. i had 3 media questions, and the latter 2 i had chosen my answer before i checked the media. they don't try to trick you.

I used this thread a lot while I was studying so I figured I should contribute.

Step 1 231/94

I studied for 3 1/2 weeks. I used the Kalpan books and UW. I thought the Kaplan books had more than enough info. I took the exam without having done an OB or Peds rotation. So all of my learning came straight from those books. I prefer to read text over short facts like in FA. I did around 70% of UW all timed unused random blocks of 46 q's. My avg started out in the mid 50's and then moved up to around the mid 60's. I think my final avg was 62% with the last blocks avg around 65%. I think the biggest thing is to not get discouraged with UW. I would get 2 or 3 scores in the 70's and then get 2 or 3 scores in the 50's. I def thought the exam was tough and by the end I was just hoping that I passed.

I really liked the NBME's for step 1 and they were 1 point off in predicting my score so I tried them for step 2.

NBME #1 227(1 month before the test)
NBME #3 229(4 days before the test)

I was really bummed when I saw I only went up 2 points with a month worth of studying. Final result...

Step 2 243/99

I dont think the nbme's are very accurate for step 2 so looking back on it I would have much rather done 4 blocks of UW over them. Hope this helps those that are studying for the test. Best of Luck!!

USMLE World 65'ish, completed 1/3-1/2 of the Q's - Q quality is largely crap.

Free USMLE practice/orientation ~90'ish - slightly easier than the real thing but more accurate than above.

Step 2CK 255

Study for the shelf exams through MS3, Step2CK is just an easier version of those. Focus on the basics, the more convoluted the question stem the more likely they are to ask you how to adress someone's tachycardia and hypotension after hemorrhage or some such business.

I completely agree!!!

I took NBME form 1 about 6 days before the test. It was 13 points below my real score. For step 1, the NBME was only 1 point below my real score (taken 4-5 days before the real thing).

My Step 1 was 20 points below NBME, though everyone I talked to said it predicted right on.

For CK, NBME was 11 points low - a result I was much more pleased with than before.

For Step 1 the NBME predicted my score at 220. My actual score was a 225. I took one of the NBMEs about a month ago (prestudying) and it predicted my step 2 score at a 250. Now I would probably crap my pants if I scored that well.

I take Step 2 next Friday. So far UW scores at 68%.

hey guys,

i could use either a boost or reality check for my predicament.....

i'm an IMG.....applied for the match.....got 4 interviews (yaaaaaaaa!!!)....BUT, still got step 2CK to go......avg. score of 57% on UW.....and did NBME a few days ago.....scored 199!!!! ( 🙁 ).....i got 214 for step 1......how accurate do u guys think NBME is????.....i was gonna sit step 2 in 2 wks....should i add another 2?????......

input greatly appreciated!!!

😳

i started UW with about 50-60%'s.....i was a little freaked out. But after re-learning how questions are asked, what they're looking for, etc, i ended up with about 80%'s after about a month of taking practice tests. I thought the UW questions were a little harder than the Step 2 (i took both comlex and usmle step 2s), and the q's and a's were more straightforward on the real thing. i ended up with a 244/99 on my usmle step 2, and a 96 on my comlex. 👍

hi im new to this forum,
getting ready to take my step 2 ck soon. wondering how accurate this formula actually is.. ive been using it for several ppl who have posted their UW and Ck scores, and it either correlates to the exact number or a few numbers below the actual CK score.. according to this i should be scoring about a 205 on the real CK...
i would like to hit 215-220 cuz my step 1 score sucked... any advice on how accurate this formula is would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
thanks

Step 2-CK score = 2.3(UW average) + 84

sorry, this is the formula i was talking about..🙂

there is a free practice test available on the nbme/usmle website. it gives you a percentage correct, but no correlation between this % and the two or three digit scores on the real thing.

As I attack this mind numbing experience that is called Step II, can someone please tell me where the score predictor is that estimates WORLD scores, or the free USMLE test. Thanks....I think.:scared:

Step 1: 249/99
Step 2: 259/99

I used usmleworld to study for Step 2 while also doing some seperate reading on Neuro since I hadn't done the rotation yet, and also read through most of Secrets i think. I took a month off in July to study, and studied w/ a bunch of my friends everyday and they were definitely doing better than me in the World questions (i think i got my final percentile up to about 65ish, they were all in the 70's) they also finished 100% of the world questions, and i left about 10% undone. Anyway I did significantly better than any of them on the test and i think the point is not to get too obsessed with how you're doing on the world questions and to make sure that you retain the information that you learn from the questions that you do. I thought world was great although i think they did overemphasize some cardiology priniciples that i wouldn't exactly describe as high yield when it came to my test. Anyway hope this helped someone.
