Actually, much like Step I, it wasnt that awful. But it still sucked...a lot.
Learning from Step I and figuring out what works best for me, I trashed all study sources except for UWorld. I also re-read through parts of Step 2 Secrets (i had been going through it throughout the year during rotations). I studied for 2.5 weeks, 4-6 hours a day, in which i could get in anywhere between 100-200 questions. Topic based, 25 question per block, all in tutor mode. I went through all the categories in reverse order of when i took the rotation (ie - i had OBGYN last so i started with it and worked my way all the way back to Medicine which I had in July/August). I finished all the categories except medicine which i didnt come close to completing, but i did several blocks each from all the medicine categories. Completed 60% of UWorld at a cumulative average of 66%. I took NBME 2, which I did not like at all and which I dont think was as similar to the real thing as it was for Step I, and it predicted a 220.
As some have said previously, UWorld is all you need for this test. The most striking thing to me, even having doing UWorld and the 3rd year shelf exams, was the question stem lengths. Some of them were just absolutely ridiculous. The psych questions were the worst. After the first few, anytime there was a paragraph that took up 3/4 of the page i knew automatically i was looking for a personality/mood disorder. My test seemed to be fairly well distributed. And fortunately, the one thing i completely skipped both on UWorld and Secrets, Biostats, mainly because I hate it, only appeared 5 times on the whole test. It did have more respiratory than I cared for, but a lot of the time it was a mixed respiratory/ID or respiratory/rheum, etc question, and not the pure respiratory phys that i hate.
Its really hard for me to gauge my performance on these things. Theres times you get on a roll and then times when it seems like youve marked the last 8 questions in a row. Having gotten a 233 on Step I my goal for this test was >240. If i had to give a conservative estimate of my score it would fall somewhere between 225-240.
Of course the best thing about all of this is that having knocked it out so early, I can now coast to interview season and through the 2nd half of the year without some big test looming. Good luck to all the rest of you, I'll report my score whenever they decide I've torturously waited long enough.
