Congrats to all the accepted so far...if we get a call, how long afterwards should we expect materials in the mail...anyone else accepted to PHS?

Hope you guys hear some good news in the coming days...to answer your question, I received my conditional acceptance letter 3 business days after "the call."

yeah I'd seen this before . . . just wondering if there was a change, in case they might be delayed . . . looks like its still the same.

What was your impression of the interview day? of the school?

I had a wonderful host who took care of me the day before the interview. If you can get one. I'd recommend. I am from Texas, hence he was helpful.

The group of interviewers was much smaller than all the others school where I've interviewed. I believe a lot of students with very impressive resumes were there. There were students from West Point from what I recall and I could tell that they were getting in (so two less seats).

I had a better impression of USUHS than all the other Texas schools I've interviewed thus far. Although, I think the facilities in most Texas schools were better.

Did you go on the sim center visit? I feel that by far it was nicer than all the Texas schools I have interviewed at.

Really? Darn, I should have gone... I had a flight to catch.

Today is the Texas Pre-Match day for Texas residents and everyone here is going crazy.

Has anyone heard anything today? I haven't, and with it being as late as it is, I guess I won't hear anything for another 2 weeks... dang.

Hears to hoping that someone here gets some good news today! Good luck all.

nope. I've had my phone next to me all day / checked this forum 10 times or so, but no news. So...maybe early next week....or another 2 weeks. ......

I called admissions today and thought I'd pass along the news. In case anyone is wondering, they won't be sending out unconditional acceptances for a few more weeks (and we all know how good their time frames are!), possibly early December. However, you can call and verify your security, dodmerb, and that they received your acceptance form.

Best of luck!

did you guys get something about a security clearance (in the mail) BEFORE your interview? or does this come after?

In the interview letter, is sais to bring security paperwork with you to the interview, but I have yet to receive any. (I did my get my dodmerb stuff though).. . . I already have a TS clearance, so I think i should be ok as far as clearance goes.

If you have a TS clearance, I wouldn't worry about it.
I have a SECRET clearance and no paperwork came. I went to the security office on interview day, They checked and that was it... But they got a copy of my passport.

I just got my unconditional letter in the mail today; it was postmarked 12-Nov and the letters inside dated 6-Nov. I got my conditional call on 15-Oct and letter on 20-Oct.

I forwarded all of my email as a text to my cell phone today expecting something. I didn't get anything from USUHS, but I did get into UTMB in Galveston.

I really want USUHS, but my heart is a little lighter. At least I'll be a doctor.🙄

Congrats! Now everything else is just gravy...

I found an interesting read on the USUHS website for anyone interested:

unconditional came today

postmarked the same day as dwb's. USUHS 2013! good luck everyone still waiting

Well, after interviewing a week ago, I now join the ranks of the "waiting". Anyway, best of luck to everyone here, I really hope that things work out and some of us end up getting to meet in person this summer

I have a quick question for anyone that might know. I was recently unconditionally accepted to USUHS and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a list of text books that are used in the first year courses. I work on an ambulance, and sit around for 55+ hours a week, so I figure I might as well do something constructive. Also, are your books issued to you, or do you get a reimbursement, or how does that work. I figure I will only buy the cheapest books if I can’t get my money back. Thanks in advance

My host said they just give you a huge stack of books during orientation I think. I cracked open my old biochem book the other day and did a little review. You can find the lecture topics on the USUHS website in the class schedule. From friends I have talked to, the basic sciences in med school are nor more difficult then undergrad only they go through material a lot quicker and a lot more all at once. Someone please correct me if I wrong.

To anyone who interviewed recently- Did they mention if apps were up by a lot this year? I can't believe that people from the 2nd & 3rd interview days are being made to wait until December to hear if they got in. Plus they are rejecting people who are awesome applicants with great stats. I don't understand how they are handling the process this year.

Hey how do you know this?

I called admissions, told them my interview date & asked when I would hear, they asked for my name, and told me that I would hear in 2 weeks. and apologized for the wait. They sounded nicer this time 😉

well, for those of you that interviewed 9/18, i think we're just getting to the 8 week mark (11/20), if my math is right. they really should've gotten back to you by now, at least in some form. yeah something's gotta be screwy, either they have a much greater volume of applications, or they're under-manned (I'd put my money on the latter).

I would assume the former as well since they stressed on interview day that due to the high volume of applicants this year it was important to get your physical done as soon as possible.

does anyone know about the circumstances under which they'll withdraw an offer of acceptance? Or anyone have any thought about this [read: my] situation.

So this past August I started taking graduate classes to help differ loan repayment (finished bachelor's this past spring). I really hate it and I would much rather spend my time next semester working more hours in the hospital where I'm employed than injecting samples into an HPLC. They wouldnt withdraw my acceptance if I didnt re-enroll would they? I mean, i'll suck it up and make a few monthly payments on the loans until med-school starts up. I called today to ask if they would need my graduate transcript cause the letter that came with the unconditional acceptance didnt say they wanted it. I wasn't taking classes at the time my amcas was verified so it didnt end up on my application. I put the classes on the update sheet, but I when I called today to ask if they wanted them the people in admissions only told me to send my undergraduate transcripts with my degree date posted. That since they graduate classes weren't on amcas that they didnt want the transcript. Anyone have any thoughts on what they'd say if stopped taking classes? I really think my time would be much better spent working in an ER than learning how a mass spectrometer works or how to synthesize some obscure compound with no practical use.

Appreciate any feedback, I'll probably just call admissions and ask outright

don't like mass spec & hplc? cmon, chemistry is a good time! j/k

I guess it all depends on how you advertised yourself on your primary and secondary applications. For instance, if you put down that you were working towards a masters degree, then if you bailed outta the masters program . . that might be a problem. In other words, you didn't follow thru on something that you put down on your application, and they'd want to know why. so did you put down on your application that you're formally enrolled in a graduate program? how many more classes do you have to take to get your masters?

Since it wasn't on your AMCAS primary, they don't need your graduate transcripts, and you (presumably) wouldn't be getting a degree after this upcoming semester, then I'd be really surprised if they didn't let you drop. But, yeah, you should definitely call just to be sure.

I didnt really advertise it all on either the AMCAS application or supplemental. When I filled out both I wasn't enrolled. I had been admitted to the program but wasnt sure if I wanted to do it. On the interview update sheet I put that I was taking graduate classes but put nothing about getting a master's degree. I'd have to take 18 more hours (about 6 six classes) to finish the degree, which would be a lot, but doable. However, I really dont think itd be possible to finish the research component, especially while working 30hrs a week at the hospital and serving as the assistant swim coach where I got my bachelor's.

The way I see it is that I wont be getting my master's anyway and I'd much rather focus on working at the hospital and coaching. I'd also have a bit more time to do some reading on the side, ie maybe some anatomy or micro, or the army officer's guide. So I dont think it will be a problem, at least I really hope it isnt

yeah, ok, then I'd say bail on it. I don't even think you have to seek acceptance of your decision from the admcom, since you didn't put it on your application. as far as they should know, you were just taking some classes for fun.

Someone on the other forum said they heard back november 13th. They interviewed October 9th. Did anyone else hear back this past week? Did they just skip the October 2nd interviewees???

really. which branch?

& which forum?

nevermind, found it...

My speculation is that they are waiting to compare us to more applicants in our respective branch. Also, someone said something about not giving out any more UNconditionals until Dec, so I'm not sure what that's about...

i call BS on that one.

i call BS on that one.

So far I know of 3 Oct. 9th interviewees (2 are SDN posters) that got in already but only 1 Oct. 2nd person (I think). WTF is going on? People will get turned off to the school if they don't feel like they are treated well by admissions.

what service preference were these 2 ? They say AF is the most requested preference, Navy the least (not including PHS)

So maybe that's the case even more so this year, hence the delay in getting back to AF applicants. I dunno

Hey all,

Thought I'd come and introduce myself as a hopeful classmate for '09. The USUHS admissions process has been meen slightly mystifying so a place to do some research is appreciated.

I was really surprised to see how many of ya'll have interviewed at this point. I don't interview until Dec. 11th and I'm stearting to get worried slots will be gone. I guess time will tell.

Hi and welcome. You shouldn't be too worried... you might be placed on the waitlist but the waitlist moves pretty fast and slots will open up, especially for those placed on the waitlist early on. They interview people through February and they wouldn't be wasting their time interviewing people with no chance of getting into the class. Good luck!

(And also good luck to the people interviewing tomorrow!)

interviewed today . . went well I think. my interviewers were cool . . .i think the hardest question i got was the biological weapon one (how would you feel about creating a biological weapon??? my response: when do I start ?). what are your strengths/weaknesses.

i guess the only piece of bad news is they said it would be a good 10-12 weeks before any notification.

just an fyi, the admin office looked pretty busy (even after they got us underway). there were a lot of calls coming in from inquiring applicants. I guess they're back up, or a little low on manning . . . so that might be the cause of the delay (or something that's contributing to it).

lol, wait, did you actually get this question?!?!?!?! Where was this when I was interviewing!!!!!!! (I got the doctor/officer conflict question which had already been well explained here, fyi)

Would you really have no problem making a weapon that turns people into flesh eating zombies???

Oh, and quick question, am I the only person in the history of USUHS to get misdirected from the medical center metro stop and wind up lost on the NIH campus when the tour is supposed to be starting in the morning??? (The shuttle for some reason wasn't running the last round so they told me to walk)

Other than already having broken a sweat during my walk (run) to the school, everything went well (oh, and my luggage was lost by my airline so I was wearing brand new, unbroken-in leather shoes while throwing down a six-minute mile pace, I really wish I could have seen me in the third person, I would have died laughing)

Yeah sure, what the hell, the world needs zombies too . . .

No j/k. I said that I would do it, but that my rationale in doing so would be to deter other countries from using such weapons. If there's mutual deterence, then the weapons are never used, and no lives are lost. In other words, sometimes the military designs the biggest/baddest weapons with the sole intention of never using them. Peace through power . . . I also likened this question to the A-bomb one (If you were Harry Truhman, would you have dropped 2 A-bombs on Japan at the end of WWII. Con: No, b/c of the great loss of civilian life Pro: Yes, b/c it ended the war, sparing an invasion/defense of the Japanese mainland, which could've resulted in many more deaths). So sometimes (as a gov't official) you have to make seeminlgy awful choices for the sake of (what you believe) is the commond good. bla bla bla

this question came after the: "Do you see a conflict b/w being and officer and a doctor?" to which I replied No. The virtues of a good doctor go hand-in-hand with those of a good physician.

anyhoo . . . a lot of these questions have no easy answer. I think they're looking to see how thoughtful you have, and how confidently you can answer.

here goes nothing . . I'm now in the waiting pattern . . .

I had a similar situation to yours snuffles. I hadn't fully filled out/printed my update form. So I woke up at like 430am in hopes of finding a kinkos so print it out at the day of my interview....there's one in downtown bethesda near a barnes and noble, about a mile walk from the metro. So i ran around downtown bethesda at like 6am looking for this mystical kinkos, eventually found it and printed my stuff. At this point it was about 45 minutes until check-in time (so i suppose I had an hour and fifteen minutes to spare with the 30 or so minute window). Made my way back from kinkos to the metro and got on. Got off at the medical center stop, but had no clue where to go from there. I walked up and down the bus stops but couldn't find the right one. I ended up walking around NIH for about 15 minutes (t-minus 10 minutes until check in started). Eventually was told that I NNMC was across the street. Crossed the street, got held up at the gate, and power-walked/jogged the next 15 minutes or so the school and made it with about 15 minutes before check-in ended. Luckily for me my shoes were broken in and the weather wasn't too bad. I'll bet it was freezing running around bethesda at 730 in the morning. Good luck

I got a letter from DODMERB saying:

Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences - Qualified.

Cool... now just waiting...

I also received a letter from the Security department on Monday (Nov. 17.
saying something along the lines of:

Dear Applicant:

For attendance at Uniformed Services University you need to be eligible
for, or have, a Secret Security Clearance. etc...

My interview was on Nov. 6 so.... the email was a bit late.
I was fortunate to have a security clearance already...

For those interviewing soon and don't have a security clearance.
You will need to fill out and turn in an SF-86....

Why does everyone else get the cool questions? I interviewed on Thursday as well and my questions were all very standard. ("When did you decided to pursue medicine?" "What is a challenge you see yourself facing in medical school/ as a doctor?")

Also I wonder if it was just this Thursday but it seemed like there were a lot more people trying to do Navy than I would have expected. (seemed disproportionate for the number of spots available) Though I guess you can't base those sorts of things off of any one interview group.
