hey carter- did you decide where you're gonna go yet? Just curious! good luck deciding!

I've pretty much decided on usuhs. I'm staying on cornell's waitlist but baring the probably unlikely event I get off it I'll be at usuhs in the fall and ods in June

ah, congrats. I hope I have that opportunity as well!

Anyone else hanging out on the waitlist? Anyone hear any acceptance news yet for any branch? Just want to get a feel for what's happening in other parts of waitlist world.

Yup! yours truly. Just make sure you're medically qualified. That's about all we can do right now. Let's hope for more movement after 5/15.

Hasn't there been like no movement at all? I'm still holding out hope that the stars will allign and there will be some movement before I'm supposed to commission but I think it is looking like there might not be anything happening till the 15th.

Oh and to answer erawka's question I'm on the waitlist (Navy) too. Been sitting here for a couple of months now. Like DrMetal said, just make sure you are medically qualified and sit tight.

congrats to all you guys in the class of 2013! i'm a current 4th year at usuhs and will be graduating in a month. i truly loved my med school experience here.

i know it's hectic with trying to get orders, going to officer training, and trying to move. don't worry...it'll all work out. if anyone is interested, i have a 2 bedroom apartment less than 3 miles from school/base that i'm going to rent out. email me at [email protected] if you're interested and want details/photos.

I was working out a preliminary budget to make sure $4200/month gross was sufficient to live on in the D.C area.

Could someone currently going to USUHS or who has gone let me know how the housing allowance works?

I assume that you get $4200/month $1500 of which is for housing. Is that correct or do they pay for your place and you can't keep what's left over.

I ask because I am single and thinking about getting a studio which I have found $850/month in Silver Lake.

So if I did go for the studio could I keep the exta and use it for other expenses?

Also, for USUHS students I read somewhere that you go to OIS. Is this the same as ODS?

I was hoping to get commissioned as early as possible so that I won't be scrambling to find a place in Bethesda right before classes begin.

I would love to do OIS in April/May and be able to move to Bethesda 3 weeks ahead of classes, get settled and start med school with as little drama as possible.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

BAH is just a sum that you get paid on top of your base pay. If you only spend half of it on housing you are more than welcome to pocket the rest.

I'm pretty sure OIS and ODS are the same thing, they've just changed the name. I'm pretty sure you dont get to decide when to go to OIS/ODS and they'll make you go along with the rest of the incoming USUHS class this summer. Not totally sure though, but I know for the Army we're all going from june 14th until july 28th. We just get emails saying we have spots confirmed for class 904.

I have just checked the USUHS catalog for the second time and it seems like OIS starts in June, runs through late July and then you report straight to USUHS early august to start orientation.

Can someone who is in USUHS or went there please inform me as to the best method for getting settled in Bethesda?

Should you get an apartment and a car prior to starting OIS, so that when you report to USUHS right after OIS you have a place to stay and a mode of transportation? This of course would mean paying an extra 2 months rent but it may be the easiest method.

Is there time during orientation to find an apartment and get a car?

How did you go about getting settled?

And when exactly do regular classes commence for first year student?

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest going up sometime in May or June (before OIS) and finding a place. Most apartment complexes can hold a place rent free for up to 60 days. So you could probably set it up so you'd start paying rent sometime in August. From what I've read and heard the inprocessing/orientation schedule is pretty lax so there is plenty of time to get settled. Regular classes start, I believe, August 22. Check the gold information sheet that was handed out on interview day, its got all the important dates for all the services on it.

I interviewed in late Feb (my app was late going in), got placed on the wait list 3/31, and got a call from Dr. Calloway roughly 10 days later with some fantastic news. I'm Air Force, and it seems (at least from my experience) that there is some movement on their wait list. Hope this helps!

Awesome! Congrats! Are you going to attend? It's nice to see some WL movement.

That is fantastic news thank you! AF is my top choice at the moment (I have no prior service so I could go wherever they'll put me). My letter was dated 3/25...so date clearly isn't indicative of waitlist order, but it's good to know there's movement!

Anyway, congrats on your acceptance and hopefully we'll be classmates soon :xf:

Also, not to be totally obsessive here...but you said you got a call? Was that how they notified you? Or did she call you to see if you would take a placement in AF if it were offered (eg...your first choice was the Navy or Army)..and then did you get a letter later? I'm wondering if AF is the one that's moving...will they call me or snail mail me seeing as it's listed as my first choice?

This is probably looking way too far into things but it's April, and it does crazy things to a person...

I am here looking for some advice, as are most people on SDN. Here is my situation:

I am on the Air Force wait list at USUHS. I filled out my secondary VERY late and sent it in late January, and then interviewed on February 26 (their last day of interviews). I am happy to be on the waitlist as I assumed most of their class was full by the time I had interviewed. I loved the school and it is by far my first choice.

My predicament is this: I have an acceptance to another school and, if going to this other school, would use HPSP. I got a call from my recruiter today and I was "officially" selected for the scholarship and he told me that I have 72 hours (until this Friday) to commission. Upon commissioning, I will no longer be able to accept an offer at USUHS, if that option becomes available.

What would you do? Do you think there will be a lot of movement on the waitlist? Is it likely that I will get in off the waitlist? Is there somebody at the school I could talk to that would be willing to "spill the beans" a little to give me some honest odds to go on? Would switching my preference from AF to Army make a difference on my likelihood of getting in of the waitlist?

Any advice/opinion would be GREATLY appreciated. I wasn't expecting this curve ball. My recruiter knew that I was applying to USUHS, but never said that when it came down to it, I would have 72 hours to make a decision like this. I really don't want to re-apply for med school next year. I have an infant and another on the way and life is only getting more hectic. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Something doesn't smell right here. HPSP or USUHS, you have to get commissioned sometime. So you can go thru with the actual commissioning process. But I don't think this actually commits you to HPSP (I think what officially commits you to HPSP is the first transaction that pays for your MSI), but I'm not sure. Check out the HPSP FAQ, and I'm sure other HPSP students can chime in.

How competitive is AF HPSP ??? If you refuse it now, can you accept it in May? (say May 15th, when you have to commit to a school?) If it is competitive this year, then I see why you're in a bind.

As far as the waitlist goes, this may be a tough year b/c there's a lot of folks on the waitlist, especially Navy. AF was pretty heavy too.

I called and spoke with admissions at USUHS and they told me that if I commission with HPSP, then I CANNOT accept a position at USUHS. This really does put me in a bind. I don't think that if I refuse the HPSP now I can accept it next month, because it has already gone to boards and I was told that I have 72 hours to accept the scholarship, or else it is considered a refusal on my part. I really don't know what to do. Do you think I would be wise to change my first choice to Army at USUHS vs AF since you said AF waitlist was heavy? How do you know which are longer and how many people are on them?

Thanks for your help...it's appreciated. Just talking about his is helping.

Hmmm. Ok, well if you got that outta USUHS admissions, then I'd take it to be solid. So yes, you are in a bind.

To be honest, I don't know what the current status of the waitlist is. Was told a couple weeks ago that Navy had about 30 folks on it, about half as much on the AF, and (at the time) there were still some Army spots open (which I'm sure have been taken up by now, and there's an Army waitlist too).

If you don't particularly care about Army vs AF, then give admissions a call and see if making the switch would accelerate your acceptance (again, I'm sure there's an army waitlist by now, so it may not make a difference . . . but it doesn't hurt to ask).

As far as your decision goes, if you really have to decide in the next 72, I'd go with the sure thing (civ via HPSP), since that's your bird-in-the-hand at the moment. Don't quote me on this, but I think if you get into USUHS sometime in the next months, you can bail on HPSP (as long as a transaction hasn't been made to pay for any part of MS1), I think! Field this one in the HPSP FAQ thread.

There was movement on the AF waitlist as of a few days. A few posts back someone was saying they got in off the AF waitlist. You could call and ask about switching to the army. What would happen if you were to refuse the HPSP scholarship this year? You could still wait for a spot to open up at USUHS while still holding on to your civilian acceptance. The worst that happens is that you take out loans for one year of medical school. If you dont get in off the waitlist you go to the civ school and then pick up HPSP for the remaining 3 yrs. This would cost you the amount of school for 1 year plus, i believe, the signing bonus (which i think is only available for 4yrs of HPSP).

Thanks for the responses. I know that it would be unfair to those waiting to hear/accept the HPSP, but I really wish I could wait to commission until after knowing about USUHS. I just got off the phone with USUHS again and they said to call tomorrow and talk to Dr. Calloway and perhaps she will be willing to let me know HOW FAR down the waitlist I am and what she thinks my odds might be. I sincerely hope that she will be willing to give me some insight here. I will really be kicking myself if I turn down HPSP and don't get into USUHS because we really need that 20k to pay back some of the debt we have incurred during the app cycle and this past year. I would kick myself even harder, however, if I were to accept the HPSP, thereby ruining my chances at USUHS, and get offered a spot there. Man, just when I thought the app cycle was winding down...

Thanks again for your advice.

Thank you everyone for your input/advice. Just got a call from Dr. Calloway and I'M IN!!!!!!! So excited!!!

Thanks again and good luck to all those still waiting. There is movement on the waitlist. I put AF as my first choice but was offered Army.

Wow, that's a really awesome end to your dilemma. Congratulations! I guess it pays to be proactive.

Thats awesome news. See you in San Antonio.

Thanks for the congrats everyone. It is a HUGE relief and nice ending to my situation. Come to find out that legally, the recruiter could NOT make me commission within 72 hours like he was saying. Dr. Calloway actually told me that. Anyway, it will be nice to meet you all in San Antonio.

Another question: How did you all go about finding a place to live and when are you moving? I have myself, my wife and two small children. A house would be ideal, but probably VERY expensive there. Any suggestions on websites/resources to use to find housing? It is also my understanding that there is not any available housing on school grounds, right?

Thanks again. You have all been a great support group!

The student spouse club has a list of some available places. Not sure how up to date it is, but it will get you started. Also there is other useful info. The link is in the drop down menu of the students page on the USUHS website. Hope it helps

If you don't mind, would you share some of your applications stats?

So I just called, and apparently the waitlists (across the board) are at a bit of a standstill at the moment. Sad, sad.

Ok. That's not too surprising, most of the movement occurs after 5/15 when students have to commit to a school.

Let's just sit tight fellas . . .I know the wait sucks. Just keep your heads up and have a good backup plan for the following year, in case you don't get in this cycle.

Just finished up with Second Look weekend. It was very informative and it was great to meet all the future classmates.

Key piece of information that people on this thread might want to know:
Waitlists are huge - Navy 50, Air Force 35-40, Army 15-20, USPHS 10-15.

Hopefully these will clear up after 5/15. Good luck.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I'm sure there were wait-listed folks there this weekend that gasped at this.

Anybody ask if admissions would be a little more forthcoming about peoples' position on the waitlist, or likelihood of getting in??? That would be nice to know, if we have to put our plan B into effect (I just got offered a new set of orders, to take or not take?! that's my dilemma, I'm sure others have similar situs)

For those of you who went to 2nd look, did they say anything about when we should expect our orders? Or a welcome email/packet, for that matter?

If you are unsure you can always call the personnel department of your respective service...not the USUHS entity for example Air Force would call folks at Air Force personnel at Randolph AFB.

Don't worry waitlisters many of you will get calls on May 15th just like me 3 years ago. 👍

I hate to be a pessimist but I'm not so sure. It seems like waitlist movement is going to be down a lot this year. (at least for Navy)

and that's exactly why i just sent an update listing army right up alongside navy at number 1. if i get off the alt list at all, it seems like it sure won't be navy, but maybe ill be hanging out with you guys in "cammies" instead of khaki's =0

While I'm glad you made the switch to a more virtuous branch, I regret to inform you that BDUs were phased out long ago. At least you didn't call them cammies.

Aw Goose how could you?! J/k, you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully you'll get in. Then when you graduate, just do a inter-service transfer back to the Navy 🙂 . I don't think they'll let priors do inter-service transfers to attend USUHS . . . in any case, the Navy's very near/dear to my heart, I could never leave her.

you sound like a battered spouse doc, didn't you just become one of those? those=doc (PhD), not the battered spouse you already are

I'm very battered yes. The Navy's actually been very good to me over the last 8 years. I've gotten almost everything I've wanted, with a little bit of luck, a ton of admin, and diligence . . .so I think I have a psychological attachment!

Quick question on a similar note, I've decided to take the free BDU's from ROTC and stand out for the next couple of years (until the AF completely outlaws them). Is there any cool USUHS bling (ie unit/command patches) that would be appropriate?

Thanks

humbug! I don't know your cool hooah lingo yet...i was all psyched to be thegoose (minus the ejection seat mishap)....which i guess is still possible in the future considering my chances of getting any spot are bleak. We'll see.

Well if you really want to be Goose you should go to NFO training, not medical school. Though the same guy did play a doctor on ER...

wow, i can't believe i never realized that. Top Gun is my go to movie whenever I have the slightest second thought about joining the Navy.

There are 106 people in the USUHS facebook group for whatever that means. The number has shot up a whole lot over the last few weeks too as people are confirming their intentions to attend. I won't hypothesize on what that means for waitlist movement, but it looks like a chunk of the class is locked in!

I think it's far too early for that sort of speculation. I know for a fact that 1/5 or even 1/4 of the current members are current students and/or non-students looking to fill their houses/apts next year.
