Hey guys. Just had the USyd MMI in Vancouver a week and a half ago. We were told specifically that offers wouldn't be made til late october/early november. Well, I got my "firm offer" yesterday. So of course I jumped on it and accepted. But what's up with that? Anyone else getting offers already? Anyone know why?

They usually respond to internationals a lot faster than locals. I got my offer for USyd right after my interview a few years ago but decided to apply again to UQ. Local interviews only start this month, their October schedule for offers is for local students. Your excellent MCAT that you posted might have had something to do with it, usually the average MCAT at Sydney is around a 30.

UQ and Sydney are roughly equal in my opinion, I think UQ though has a nicer campus. Sydney is in a sort of dodgy part of town. UNSW has the best campus in the Sydney region, a short ride from the beach. More to do in Sydney outside of study but you are not there to party, and chances are you will not have the time nor the money.

Yes, I was accepted by U Sydney too. I was very surprised. At least this school has good organization skills though.

I checked their interview dates and they interviewed in Singapore earlier than Canada. So that means as soon as they got back to Sydney, they compiled their interview scores and gave out acceptances.

I am very excited to have the chance to go to such a wonderful school!

I was just asking about the interview process, and if others are in the same boat. I know I'm going to love Sydney. Good effort at raining on the parade, though.

OMG!! already received the offer?
I haven't receive anything yet tho:scared: this means that i am rejected?.....hope not....plz

I got my offer today too... but they want us to accept and pay the first half of the tuition fees within a month. I don't know about the rest of you, but it's not easy for me to get $28,000 that fast. Plus, I wanted to wait to see if I can get the international student scholarship ($10k) before I commit to USyd over UQ... this just makes the decision a little bit more difficult.

Don't you live in the U.S.? Are you filing a loan application through FAFSA?

Do the loans come that fast?

No, stafford loans will not be disbursed until the first day of class. To pay for the deposit you need to use your own money or arrange for a private loan.

Wait a minute, Sydney wants 28 Grand up front?? Are they crazy???!!!

28K upfront? that's insane!
You should contact the admission to explain your situation. If I remember correctly someone on this forum who got accepted to Usyd only paid 5 or 10% tuition for the first semester and deffer the rest of it to next semester.

Did you contact Sydney to see if you could defer the payment date until loans are dispersed into your student account? Putting down 28K now to hold your spot in med school is insane!

I sent them an email, but I haven't heard back yet. 28K is definitely outrageous... I guess I'll have to wait to see what they say.

Can't defer the deposit, its tied to their ability to issue you a COE which you need to obtain a student visa. Perhaps they can reduce the deposit some.

Congrats guys, I also got my offer yesterday. I'm most definitely going to Sydney! Anyone in the same boat? msg me.

That is big jump from few years ago, when I was offered a spot at USyd, the deposit was around $1200AUD. They must be out of their minds if they think
students can get 28k up front that quickly.

I don't think they are out of their mind, rather I think they have a very clear image of the type of student they want, and that is the student that can come up with $28k on a whim.

How much is the total annual tuition at Sydney? Are you going to be living in a dorm?

Sydney is 10k more a year than Queensland. Living costs in Sydney are actually only slightly more than Brisbane these days. A few years ago, there was a big difference, but Queensland's real estate has appreciated considerably over the past few years. There are some Gold Coast apartments that can sell for as much as $15 to 20 million AUD. I would guess USyd would cost about 60k more over four years.

Just wanted to let everyone know if they are from the States and are planning on going to school in OZ or NZ for next year and have to start looking at paying tuition soon I would really consider watching what the market does (On Bloomberg) in the next few months or so before they pay any money. The OZ dollar has dropped down to 81+ cents from being as high as 98 cents two months ago and the kiwi has dropped to 66+ cents since being around 81 cents. They predict them to drop to 79 and 64 respectively by December and 77 to 60 respectively come March. Hence, when dealing with a large sum of money (such as tuition) it really makes quite a dramatic difference with just those few cent changes occur. Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up. Cheers

Yeah, I've been closely monitoring the conversion rates too. It'll be a bit of a challenge to find the perfect time.

Still no guarantee that the Dollar rally will hold, the long run trend favors a decline rather than an appreciation.

Does anyone know when exactly the USyd dental acceptances will come??

I am dying here too! Anne from Usyd said she will send out offers possibly and hopefully this week.

If anyone hear from Anne or receive a letter from Usyd please let us know😉

Hi Shan,
I've been offered a spot in USyd too, but haven't yet received the official email. I'm curious. Does your letter of offer indicate which clinical school you'd be allocated to?

So how were you notified? By regular mail?

No; I think they'll make the clinical school placements after the Sydney interviews.

Hey Shan564,
Have contacted the international student office or medicine faculty regarding the deposit? I believe that you can put only 5 % of total tuition which is around 2300$ plus your medical insurance fee. I have received the exactly same email from Usyd and there is no way i can pay this by the end of Oct even if I apply for loan from the bank.

I will go to bank tomorrow and apply for loan and hoping that i will get approved fast enough..sigh..

They didn't tell me anything about that 5% number, but it would definitely make life easier for me. I'm waiting to hear back from the loan people at USyd (so that I can try to just pay the $28k with my Stafford loans)... but the admissions people didn't tell me anything about the possibility that you're mentioning.

Hi Joe, I received a phone call the day after my interview in Singapore, and was offered a spot then.

Finally received my offer via email today. I was beginning to wonder if I didn't actually dreamed it. 🙂

You were right, I just got the email from the financial people saying that we only have to pay 5% (instead of 50%) if we're getting a foreign loan. They told me to send them my FAFSA SAR, and they'll apparently take care of all of the paperwork and send me an email with my loan options.

Great! But whats FAFSA SAR?

FAFSA = Free application for federal student aid; SAR = Student Aid Report. It's all stuff for people getting loans from the US government. If you're getting Canadian loans, then they'll have another similar system.

Hi, Shan.
Can you tell us the e-mail address of the financial people at USyd? I just want to make sure that the same thing applies to dental students. Thank you.
