The easiest thing to do is to get someone who isn't applying to the school call. That way, no problems 😀

Are you offering 😉

I called the school today, and they said they mailed out acceptances this morning. She then asked me my name and told me I was accepted. Wonderful news!

Stats for the curious
Vanderbilt University, TN resident
3.41 GPA 22AA/23TS/17PA

Congrats Sunnyday!!!!!! Looking at your stats it seems that UT is lucky to have you.

Alright, I'm callin'. Wish me luck.

I called......twice. I got the answering machine first and the second time I got to speak with someone. I was playing it cool, just asked when the letters were sent (which was a question that I obviously knew the answer to). She was all like "they were sent this morning" and I was all like "Oh really I didn't know that"............then she said "have a nice day"......and hung the phone up 😕

What was your secret sunnyday, she didn't want me to tell her my name or anything.........and I'm very charming 😡.
Whatever, I guess I'll just wait for Monday or Tuesday (letter should be here by then).

Also, if 53 in-staters get in a year then how many have a letter on the way right now.

You need to speak to Ms. Hart for your status. I was transferred to her and was told the unfortunate news I was not one of the applicants that they decided to accept from the first meeting 🙁

Geckel,
I don't know who the secretary was. All I know is that it was a woman, and she answered the phone saying "Dental Administration." To be honest, I was surprised she was so eager to find out if I was accepted because I figured only a small percentage are accepted in December, and I would hate to have to give bad news to applicants. According to Colemans letter, they typically only accept 20-30 students in December (not sure if they are all instate or not). Hopefully, you will hear good news next week. If not, you will get accepted eventually as your stats are good for Memphis. Later!

You will be accepted eventually. I think Memphis will fill most of their class after their December 31 deadline, and after they have seen everyones fall grades. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement sunnyday. I'm suprised to hear that they only give 20-30 acceptances in December. I applied in late December last year and when I had my interview in March (the earliest choice they gave me) I was told that there was only 5 spots left in the class.

I can't stop worrying because it is very competitive this year.....and because the stats for last years acceptance cycle have not been released I don't even know what it means to be "competitive". I think they had to push back the adcoms meeting, until the 14th, so that more competitive applicants could be considered for the first round because it got so competitive begining in late October to early November. When I called in early October they told me that the applicant pool was not nearly as competitive as the previous cycle. I called again in mid-November and they said that it was more competitive.

Sorry, I know that no one wants to hear me rant but it feels good to vent once in a while.

Hey Sunnyday, or anyone else that may receive their Memphis letter, would you mind posting when you recieve/recieved the letter so that we can stop holding our breath.

Not just for this week but for any time during this cycle. This way we can know when the adcoms have been meeting and how far along Memphis is in it's acceptances. Thanks a million

I just got off the phone with Ms. Hart and she gave me the unfortunate news that I wasn't selected this time around. I had a feeling that she was going to tell me that anyway so I guess I'm no less off.

I also got the hook up on inside info while I was on the phone with her.....she said that 23 in-state letters went out and the adcoms will be back in action next month. She also told me that they select fewer people every time they meet.

You will get in eventually, you just have to be patient. It is still really early. I am surprised they select less people each time around. That must mean that almost everyone they accept turns out going to Memphis.

I would not have known to call and ask for the status if I didn't look at your threads guys, thank alot. It is a great news.
Just the fact that all of you guys got interviewed early says that there is a big chance that you will all be accepted in due time.

Congratulations Hadiya..I received my acceptance letter today through regular mail. It was not certified. For those that are interested, the school requires a 200 dollar deposit on or before January 30, 2006 to reserve a spot in the class. Good luck to all.

Dear applicants,

One thing that freak people out when they look at the statistics regarding the acceptance rate to professional school is the number of applicants versus number enrolled. A school may say that that there are 1000 people apply and indicates that 100 matriculated. This may cause some people to say that only 10% people apply got in that school. But that is totally NOT true! Consider this senerio: 1000 people apply to UT and 200 offerings of interviews go out. Say 110 people went for interview and 100 of them got in. That would be an acceptance rate of 90.9%, far from that 10% that you once thought. The numbers I choose is to make a point. If you want to know your odds, ask the school how many students apply and what is the percentage of the interviews offered, not the actual number who enroll. Dental school is becoming more and more competetive so apply to many schools as you can. Unless your GPA is less than 3.00 and DAT is below 16 (and without any special considerations), you will get in somewhere. Also, once you are offered an interview, your chance of getting in is almost 100%. The ones I know who did not get in after the interviews are the ones who appeared undecisive, and too timid or don't stand out in the crowd. I know of also many who are borderlined but made such good impressions at the interview that they get in. If you are borderline, if you ace the interview, you WILL get in. I have gone through the interviews process as the dental school applicant, post grad applicant as well interviewer for dental and post residency so I know. Good luck!

Congrats Sunnyday, Hadiya, and Mayo123 on getting accepted.

Does anyone know if they are having another meeting in January to choose more students?

I was also accepted to UT Memphis for next year. This was the only school I applied to and I am instate. It was a very hard decision and I had already decided (before I got the acceptance) that I no longer think being a dentist would be a good fit for me.

I will probably call the school next week to decline the offer. Good luck to everyone.

You puzzle me bryan45876. But I would like to congradulate you on both your acceptance and finding your proper path. Best of luck to you.

Congrats on getting accepted. Its sucks that you have chosen to take on a different path. I believe I met you during the interview at UT on 10/28. It seemed like you were genuinely interested in dentistry. Good luck with whatever you choose to do and maybe you might reconsider walking away from such a great field.

Thanks for the congratulations, husker. I'm still trying to decide, but I'm leaning towards Penn 🙂 By the way, I was at the Oct. 28th interview too!

Yes, I was there on 10/28, but I can't figure out who you are just from your screen name. During the interview I was also interviewing for jobs but I figured I started the dental application process and should see it through to the end.

I believe I know who you are. You are a student at Michigan(from your avatar), but your permanent residence is in east TN. I'm pretty sure there were no other students from Michigan at that interview.

I had graduated with a degree in computer engineering. I was also the only student there that was from Memphis.

haha...it's like a puzzle. I'm pretty sure I remember you, but It seems like you want to be discreet on SDN, so I won't spill the beans. My dad told me you lived in our neighborhood and we know your cousins. I hope you're doing well, though.

I wasn't trying to be discrete, but thanks though. I thought that just stating what my major was and where I lived would have been sufficient. Anyways, I've heard great things about UPenn, but UT seems to be a great school as well. Good luck in deciding the school you want to go to.

I talked to Coleman a few weeks ago and he told me that this is a very competitive cycle. He stated that he had 15 4.0 applicants. I'm guessing that there are plenty of 3.5-3.9 applicants as well. I won't get in this cycle so I'm one less applicant for you to compete with. I wish the rest of you the best of luck.

I talked to Ms. Hart a couple of weeks ago and she said that Dr. Coleman mentioned to her that a second meeting will be held on the 2nd or 3rd wk of February.

I talked with the secretary at the college of Dentistry and she told me that the second round of acceptance letters were sent out yesterday.

So you will also be attending. Good, I'm glad that you didn't defect like Mayo123. I should have just relaxed and listened to you all along........but I didn't.......I panicked and now I'm in the middle of the hardest semester I've ever attempted. Oh well, I'm just glad that I won't be a third year applicant.

You worked hard and you deserve it. Yeah, I am very happy I am going to Memphis. I am not sure how happy the students are there, but everyone has told me they prepare you very well clinically which is all that matters to me. Plus, it is a ton cheaper than any private school, which may not matter to some now, but it will when they are paying back their loans. Congrats again, and if you want to get together before school starts, just pm me. My soon to be wife and I will be moving down there in June/July. Good luck to everyone else too.

No, i think you're unique avatar made your story stick in my head when I read it on another thread. I noticed your post on the attendance thread and I figured I would congratulate you on your acceptance. Nobody should have to apply three times.

I just heard from Nova on friday 👍 , so that's where I'll be attending.

Hey thanks Mayo123, I'm sorry that we won't be going to the same school together. Can't say that I blame you at all though......you're going to UPenn right. Truely a fantastic school and they are lucky to have you.

He told me that it’s a very competitive year and that he had many 4.0 students apply. Basically he told me what he told you... (From an earlier post) But this is my third year applying; I am a Tennessee resident and I have been improving my application every year since. Plus, I did not have to interview this year because he told me that I interviewed very well last year!

So I remain hopeful!! 🙂

Is that similar to what DR C. told you?

Well I suppose since he said the same thing to me then that speach about "bunch of 4.0 applicants this year" stuff isn't much of an indicator. That conversation convinced me that I was never going to get accepted at UT. Trying to make myself more competitive for the next cycle, I ran off and signed up for what is now, by far, the toughest semester in my academic career. Probably still childs play compared to what I'll get in Memphis though.

I just thought of some extra stuff.....I attended a club meeting with a recently graduated dentist from Memphis. He gave up some info about the acceptance stats last year as compared to the year before. Last year saw a 100% increase in the number of people applied, GPA's went from 3.2-3.3 range to 3.6 range, and DAT's went from 17AA/16PA to 19AA/18PA. I can't verify this info, just what he said. But sounds about right to me. No way of knowing the stats for this cycle yet.....but I'd say it hasn't gotten any easier.

I think that the number of applicants this year is somewhere in the neighborhood of about 480ish-560ish. Don't know how that divides up in-state and out of state though. I've forgotten the exact numbers, but I figured (considering my demographic and all that stuff) that I had about a 1:4 shot at getting in. Whatever...........I start writing these posts and by the time I'm done I am way off the subject

Keep us updated about your situation and let's keep this thread alive. I want to hear from some more UT Memphis applicants.
