Hi-

Anyone out there a student at UT-Memphis? I'm a 4th year in medical school elswhere in the south and I am seriously considering ranking UT-Memphis surgery #1. I'm trying to get the scoop on what it is like there. Are the hospitals pretty easy to get around? What is the staff like? If you have done a surgery rotation, how would you describe the residents and attendings? Are most students and residents single or married? Do you think Memphis has a decent single life?

Any and all info is really appreciated!

I'm an M1 at UT and am enjoying it...
We have a strong clinical program that's been highly ranked over the years. I haven't had that much experience with this aspect yet, but I did volunteer at the teaching hospital (the Regional Medical Center, Memphis) which has a level 1 trauma center (something like the 3rd busiest in the nation). I observed trauma surgeries while I was there and learned a lot... To me, the residents seemed to be pretty cohesive and happy.
Non med school stuff:
For me, the major advantage to living in Memphis is that housing and living expenses are lower than other places I've lived..
There is a pretty cool music scene downtown (especially Blues), and, as a whole, the city offers most of the same advantages as other big cities I've lived in (but, beware, summers are really hot and humid here)...
Anyway, good luck with your decision--sorry I cant help you with the upperclass/residency questions more

Thanks danyela-

My favorite surgery program is, with no doubt, UT-Memphis; I just wasn't sure about the city (I was there for less than a day.) I appreciate the information- glad to hear it's a good place to live!
