UTHSC San Antonio class of 2013!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody know where I could find a match list for UTHSCSA residency match list? Just trying to get an idea of what residencies/specialties recent grads have gone into.

There's a list in the interview packet. But since I'm feeling particularly generous :p

In 2008, from highest to lowest as follows:

Internal Medicine: 41
Anesthesiology: 24
OB/Gyn: 19
Pediatrics: 18
Family Practice: 16
Psychiatry: 15
ER Medicine: 9

Etc (ranging from 1-5)...

Students Successful in the Match: 99% (not sure what this actually entails)
Staying in Texas residency: 46%
Staying in San Antonio residency: 19%
OOS residency: 54%

Thanks for the info. I haven't looked at my interview packet since September when I interviewed, trying to sort through my prematch offers...looking at those packets would help.

Eyesarecool, are you in JAMP?

Has anyone gone to look for housing yet? I'm going this Monday and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of good places or the ones to stay away from.

Haha, what's up with you guys and the catholic Jesus avatars?

I know that no matter how much finaid one qualifies for, the school will limit the amount given to what the school has calculated that the student can live off.

Anyone know what the max finaid UTHSCSA will give out? Or what the housing allotment is? I found numbers for the 2007 entering class that was about $17k for room is board. Should I use that amount to determine what I should pay in rent?

I called the finaid office and was told that 16k was the room and board budget for last year. He said he was not sure how the number would change, but I think it's a good estimate.b

One might be inclined to ask you about yours as well.

haha, don't do it! i naively aready asked in the rep. of texas thread.... i had kinda thought that sno was male, but then the picture kinda through me off, becuase it kinda looked like a picture made from a webcam. so i asked...

turns out she's his/her favorite pornstar.

That's pretty good. So that's the amount they award for R&B? Or just how much it cost students in general.

Haha, it was a rhetorical question. ;)

From what I understand, $16k is the max amount awarded for room and board.

That's a fat amount of cash. Most of the reasonably priced apartments in the area run $500-$600, so if you max out at $16k [not sure what the odds of this happening are], then you've got anywhere from 27-32 months of rent paid for, hah.

That is, of course, ignoring all those other little fees they get you with.

I think the $16k also includes food, utilties, etc... I'm going to look for housing this weekend and I'll post what I find on here.

You've obviously never lived on your own and had to pay bills. That 16K isn't near as much as you think when you consider rent, food, electricity, water, cell phone, internet, maybe cable, etc. Also, you're going to be hard pressed to find anything under $600 in the med center area. More than likely your rent will be between $650-$800, $650 for a low end, dingy apartment, $800+ for an apartment you'd feel comfortable bring a date home to.

If you see, besides room & board, there is a budget for travel/transportation and misc. stuff.

Ouch. I'm going to chalk that up to, "one can't express emotions properly over the internet".

So putting that aside, that is why I said, "that is, of course, ignoring all those other little fees they get you with." ;)

Sorry, didn't mean to come across snappy. The financial aid budget Roshario posted is excellent and paints a clear picture of what is to come. The budget is tight. It gets even tighter if you are starting school with a car payment and other debt. It can be done, but there isn't much wiggle room. Now for those that have parents that are going to be sending them money, paying their car payment/rent, then their budget is much looser and spring break in Cabo is likely.

No hard feelings buddy.

Yeah, well, my car is mostly paid off, so I don't believe I'll have to be worry about that for too long. Rent is gonna kick my butt though, but if I get to San Antonio, I've got a buddy going to in to dental who had briefly talked about some sort of arrangement.

And if all else fails, I can force my sister in to letting me commandeer the couch.

In all seriousness though, I've got a question for Roshario: any particular reason R&B jumps on the third year?

You know, I'm sure. My guess would be to use the extra in R&B to use towards residency interviews at the start of MS4 because you'll spend a pretty penny flying everywhere for interviews.

Thanks Roshario for the numbers!! I had found those online and started to use them for my budgeting, but then I noticed they were from 2007. Any reason why the R&B budget went down $1500? The overall budget went down about $4000 from what I was told by the finaid department for last year, although I'm not sure where the other cuts where made.

Not sure. I don't get/qualify for financial aid because I'm getting money from elsewhere and plus my decent income prior to med school didn't help either so I couldn't comment first hand if it increased or decreased. Unless you saw the 2008-2009 numbers, I wouldn't be 100% sure that it actually went down this year compared to 2007-2008. Did the financial aid office actually say that r&b budget was reduced?

I called and asked for the 2008-2009 numbers. I was told that the R&B budget was about $16k and the total budget was about $35k, which is less than the 2007-2008 numbers I had seen on the website. He also told me that he has no idea what the numbers will be for 2009-2010.

I was surprised to see such a great drop overall.

I guess budget low and hope for the best!!

I'm of the opinion that it's totally possible to make due with $35k, especially for a single person.

Cutting corners and things of the like will probably be necessary, but hey, this is medical school, right? The rewards in the end - and not just financial - will be worth every minute of it.

I just got back from looking for housing in SA. It's not pretty. The couple of complexes within the Medical Center are crap. Over $600 for about 640 sq. ft. in buildings that need some serious tlc. There are some nice ones off Babcock, but even more expensive.

Ouch.

Well, I have to say that not far from the med center (off Woodstone, etc.), there are some pretty decent apartments at non-astronomical prices... they're income based. I've got some friends that live in the area, and they're pretty decent.

But that's a bummer for those of us who don't want to have to drive to class.

I will not stand by while our thread falls to page two. RALLY THE TROOPS

As I sat here at work and read this, I had to prevent myself from literally laughing out loud.

How's everyone holding up waiting for the match [for those of us trying to match in]? Just incase you haven't been informed (I just found out myself), they're going to be notifying on Friday, January 30th. :D

First off, good luck to all of you waiting for some good news on the 30th!

Also, is anyone here thinking about doing the MD/MPH program? I got the e-mail last month and think I'm going to do it. I just have to get up the drive to write another essay, because I thought I was done with those for a long long time, but oh well.

Edit: Hey jonhasaheart, what part of South Texas are you from?

If you have any questions about the program, I'm the MD/MPH MS2 Student Rep for my class.

You don't happen to be from McAllen do you? That's my hometown :D

Hey Roshario, I wouldn't mind hearing what you've thought about the program so far what kind of advantages you think it might be later on. Also, do you know how hard it is to get into the UTSPH? Like are there any max applicants accepted, etc? Thanks for the info!

Hah! I'm from practically down the street. I'm from Mission.

Hah, small world. Well, hope to see you in SA next year, would be cool to have another valleyite.

For sure! I know several people from undergrad down here that are waiting on the match from San Antonio right now, so there might be several of us :p.

Does anyone know about how many people will be put on UTHSCSA's waitlist after the match? Somewhere I heard that it was only about 50.

Last year I called and they said 50 were on the waitlist, but I heard that only a couple people actually got accepted. There was not a lot of movement at all.
