This should give you an idea of what you can expect next year...I don't think UTHSCSA is planning any major changes in their curriculum:

http://studentservices.uthscsa.edu/academicinfo/fallsch04.html

I know UTHSCSA used to start in July, but I think this year they are starting in August (according to all my friends who are starting this fall...I swear my entire school is going to UTHSCSA lol). Sucks that they cut out that summer clinical intro course :\

Thanks for the link! I wonder how different our schedule will be, since the one month of CIC will be integrated into the curriculum over the entire semester......... 😕 😕

No it doesn't, that means we get a longer summer! (i'm going to asia) 😀

Where in Asia?

I'm going back to the motherland, Thailand, for about 5 weeks (May 30-July 8). 😀 😀

I'll be going to Malaysia/Singapore for about a week, then Taiwan for a month.

Obviously Prophecies didn't hear that UTHSCSA is COMPLETELY OVERHAULING their curriculum for next year!!! But y'all already know that. Sorry guys, but your schedule will look nothing like the ones posted for us this year. They are still working on your class schedules for next year...I'm not sure when Dr. Clare is planning on posting them. I know ours weren't posted until near the start of school, and that was without the major changes currently happening! I do know that y'all will be starting at the beginning of August, whatever that first Monday is.

And EvoDevo, I don't think there is a cycling club at the school...but it could just be that I have never heard of it because I haven't asked. I know that at the beginning of the year there were several people in our class that got together frequently to ride, bike, hike, etc. at a designated time and place during the week. So if there is nothing official, you can find some fellow bikers when you start class!

LOL how was I supposed to know? I don't remember them mentioning anything about curriculum overhaul when I went to interview...I also work there and I haven't heard of such a thing occurring. Then again...I never go to work...hmm... ... ... 😀

That's okay...it's just something that is very near and dear to our hearts as the current first-years and to those that will be attending next year. Our curriculum is being changed to a systems-based curriculum, broken up into modules rather than phases, much like the UTMB curriculum.

So I guess we're guinea pigs? :scared: 😳

I do remember Dr. Jones saying that lecture time will be reduced, so thats good news! 👍 👍

Nice!

I'm also spending 3-4 days in Hong Kong--time to go shopping!

Have fun in Singapore...Lots of great places on Orchard to buy electronics that have not come out in the U.S. yet. Sentosa park is also very nice.

Buy some suits in Hong Kong. Heck, buy a whole wardrobe. It won't cost that much.

Man, I miss HK shopping.

DD's right about Singapore too. Orchard rocks. But aren't there better electronics deals off Orchard? The memory is fuzzy.

So....I'm not going to Asia this summer, but hopefully I'll have a chance next summer....

However, I AM going to Hawaii for a wedding and San Francisco to visit some relatives this June and July. So seriously, I am COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS til summer. I have 6 weeks of school left plus one week of exams, and I'm dying here guys. I wouldn't mind spending the next few months just napping in the afternoons and exercising in the mornings....

Morning everyone! I hope that y'all had a great weekend and that you got to spend lots of time outdoors. Today promises to be gorgeous (in Houston at least 😉 ) so use the time wisely! I'm going riding after work today! 🙂

Lane, futrdrbaker, etc: Is there a cycling club @ the med school? I know that I used to ride hills and stuff all the time prior to moving to Houston. But because H-town is indeed the Greater Paved Swamp, riding just hasn't happened as much. 🙁 But SA looks fabulous for riding...reason #3344 why I ranked it number one. 😀

Okay, so I've been trying to get some idea of the class schedule/course sequence for the upcoming year. I've been looking over the UTHSCSA med school and HSC websites but have yet to find anything. I'm trying to get an idea of how the days are going to be scheduled, etc. It's annoying when ppl ask me how the school schedules the day and I can't even anwer them.

TIA!
i have seen the schedule for next year (just a draft though) and the day-to-day schedule looks very similar to this year's (same in-class hours); the order that the material is presented will be different. you'll also have modules instead of phases, which means you'll have ~4 weeks in between exams rather than 6 weeks. one difference, though, is that the CIC course will be redone and renamed "On Becoming a Doctor: Fundamentals"...which doesn't mean much to you other than missing out on July summer camp and it'll be held on Fridays rather than Wednesdays. your academic year will also be 2 weeks shorter at the end, but your last module is nothing but neuro. bwahahahha

True but you have to be careful of the guys that will pull you into the store off the street and harrass you until you buy something!!

Oh, I love San Francisco--I wouldn't mind completing a residency program out there!

Congrats to all of you...

There is a new aprtament complex opening up called Braodstone Colonnade. The complex is the nicest I've seen in the area and they have great move in specials. A good number of current medical students are moving out there next year icluding myself, so I thought I'd let you guys know about it. If you end up checking it out, ask for Melissa and tell her Neil from the medical school sent you. She'll hook you up with 4 weeks free prorated over a 12 month lease. If you end up filling out an application, put my namedown, Neil Shah in the referral section. I get a little kick back once you have lived there for a month... once I find out that you put me down as a referral, I'll slip a $50 check into your school mailbox. The complex is really worth checking out... they have a nice gym with multiple treadmills with individual LCD TVs and a indoor basketball court. They have a really nice sports lounge with a kitchen, a huge plasma TV, a nice pool with outdoor TVs, a outdoor poolside fireplace, a a lot of BBQ grills by the pool. The floor plans are big and the interiors are really modern. There information is as follows:

Melissa Garcia
Broadstone Colonnade
4330 Spectrum One
San Antonio, TX 78230
210-877-9926
210-877-9944 fax

Shoot me an email if you end up signing a lease and putting me down as a referral at [email protected]
I'll confirm it with Melissa and then once you've lived there for a month I'll hook you up with your $50.

See you guys at school soon...

How much is the rent? Also...what is the average amount that most people spend per month on rent? I was just wondering if it would be worth it to spend a little more money and get a little nicer, more comfortable place.

My boyfriend and I will be paying $701 a month at Broadstone Colonnade for a 707 sq. ft. apt. (that is after the one month free rent prorated over 12 months, and also an additional $15 charge per month for a 'courtyard view.') I am very excited to be moving to this complex in June! We checked it out a couple of weeks ago and filled out our application the very next day. It's absolutely awesome!
I think, but I'm definitely not the only source, that most people pay between $630-$750 for a nicer one-bedroom apartment. Sure, you could go cheaper, but the complex will most likely be older and maybe not as nice. That is the exact same thought that my boyfriend and I had...we would rather pay a little bit more to get a nicer place and live in a nicer, newer complex.

Again, Broadstone is great...I encourage you to check it out. (Those that aren't already committed to Carlyle! 🙂 ) And because Neil8338 posted the info first, I won't try to steal his referrals, because I'm cool like that.

Some you read my post above and are wondering what the price range is at this new complex. These are the prices with 4 weeks free prorated over 12 months.

1bd/1bth 568sq ft $577
1bd/1bth 664sq ft $655
1bd/1bth 707sq ft $687
1bd/1bth 858sq ft $779

2bd/2bth 997sq ft $926
2bd/2bth 1099sq ft $995
2bd/2bth 1146sq ft $1045

3bd/3bth 1311sq ft $1350

The typical rent for a 1bd/1bth in the area is $475 to $900 depending on the quality. This complex is the nicest I've seen in the area and not nearly as expensive as the rest of the nicer places. That's why a bunch of med students are moving there next year.

Read my post above for more information.

Thanks! I checked out the website for Broadstone Colonnade, and it looks amazing. It's definitely on the top of my list!

Wakey Wakey, Eggs and Bac-y! 🙂 🙂

How is everyone this fine Monday morning?

Fun/awesome reading recommendation for the week: "Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. It talks about one physician's (Dr. Paul Farmer) crusade (here, here, and here)to cure the poor and helpless in Haiti, Peru, and other places. This is the kind of doctor that I'd want as a mentor. 👍

Tip of the hat to fotolilith for the book recommendation. 🙂

(p.s. - If you have some spare cash, please consider donating to support her participation in the upcoming Hill Country Ride for Aids. It's a great cause and every little bit helps! 🙂 )

Thanks for posting those articles froggy...Especially liked the second one.

When is everyone moving to San Antonio?
I am moving 1st or 2nd week of May. Maybe a bit too early but I want to be completely settled in and know my way around before school starts. Hopefully some of you will be there too!

Morning, Dizz.

You know my answer. However, that may change if I do end up buying a house. We'll see.

I bet Merlin wants a house so he can have more room to run around 😀

I'm moving in to my apt around mid-July. I hope I have enough time to get settled! :scared:

Errrr....I'm probably moving in around the beginning of July or mid-July. Most likely livin' at Carlyle. 😀

Yeah, he'd love that. Now it's a matter of seeing whether:

a) it's financially feasible
b) I can find a reasonable home in the area.

Otherwise I'm gonna be in an apartment for @ least the first year. 🙂

BTW, good game the other night. If you'd have joined the game a bit sooner you might have won.

Oh, and hey guys: Take it from a guy who's moved a LOT (on my own): two weeks is more than enough time to get settled. Any more than that and you'll probably get bored/get into trouble. 🙂

*looks @ Dizz*

:meanie:

I cannot wait until the 24th. I don't know why but today I woke up and just can't stop thinking about it.
I still have trouble believing I'm going to medical school. We're all going to be doctors. It still blows my mind. 🙂

Carlyle-first week of July. Agree with Evo on the two weeks thing. I will get bored otherwise, however, there is a lot to do before I am settled.

Hopefully we get our financial aid packs soon so I can ballpark my budget.

We are going to be doctors, God help us all!!!!

Hey just wanted to make sure that you guys haven't gotten anything besides the scholsrship letter. I was thinking we would some kind of welcome packet eventually...hmph

I called the registrar's office yesterday to make sure everything was in order (I am about to send out my withdrawl letters!) and they told me we should receive some information on orientation/registration within the next "2 to 3 weeks".

I keep thinking something is going to go wrong and my acceptance will be taken away! :scared: I am having trouble believing I am going to medical school too 😳

And its Carlyle for me too! The small community and warm management is too hard to pass up 😀

Its nice to see we're all still alive--this thread has been dead lately!

thanks txguy. That's reassuring. I agree with you, I feel like they're going to change their mind and just not send me stuff. I still can't believe I am going either. I am very excited but also very nervous.

:meanie:

Me? Trouble? I really have no idea what you are talking about. *innocent & puzzled look*

The way I see it, its either bored/in trouble in Houston or San Antonio. I want to find places that I will like to hang out, as well as the best place to buy groceries, order chinese food, get a haircut, change my oil, etc....While I agree that 2 weeks is plenty of time to be moved in and have your affairs in order, its probably not enough time to be comfortable with your surroundings. It really sucks when you move somewhere and 6 months later you realize you only know how to get to work and back.

But then again we will be there for 4 years, and besides, I'm sure lots of people will be able to show us around...I actually have other more compelling reasons for moving early. Admittedly I'm just trying to encourage you guys to move down early so I will have someone to hang out with. 🙂

During my interview, Dean Jones came told me that anesthesiology has been an increasingly popular decision at UTHSCSA.

Groceries - HEB @ I-10 & Wurzbach
Chinese - Taipei on Lockhill Selma near NW Military

J/K. However, San Antonio is a fine place to live. Not too many distractions but enough...

BUMP!!

Finally reaching 70 degrees up here in Mass. Those damn Sox and now it seems the manager had a heart attack this morning!!!

Really sad watching Peter Jennings last night at the end of the nightly news. For those that do not know, he has lung cancer and will begin chemo soon. He was a smoker.

Yeah, I heard about that. Really sad. And Jennings is a real class act, too.

Morning everyone! 🙂

Sad, yet predictable. I just read a chapter in my Psychopharmacology book on nicotine and cigarette smoking, and I promise you that after reading this chapter, you'd probably want to kick the habit for good! Sadly, many medical students start smoking during medical school to handle the stress and anxiety (my dad was one; he now has an intense aversion to the the habit....very puzzling indeed).
