Heh. Daddy needs living money for next year. Do I have to report the bling to the IRS? 😉

But seriously, I need this vacation. It's been too long. All work and no play makes Evo a dull frog.

Did you know that horse betting is the only form of gambling recognized by the IRS as a game of skill, so you can deduct "business expenses" from your taxed earnings. You know, just FYI.
At the pre-interview social at the Bombay Bicycle Club, one of the MS2's said that they go to the tracks a lot to blow their student loan money. That sounds like fun to me.

 Awesome!

In all likelihood I won't gamble much, but I wouldn't mind being that guy who wins a million bucks....😀

Evo, you'll be the one guy who bets once and wins it all! 👍

Chacho's!
They were so strict though when I was in high school 🙁
On weekends there was a police officer checking IDs at the door...and this is like a fast food mexican restraunt. But good margaritas!
There's some in Houston right? I think I went to one down there when I interviewed at UTH.

I don't know about houston. And I only have vague, drunken memories of chachos. 😀

chachos? i will try and uphold that tradition. haha..anyone else in? especially after test week..before test week..during... it'll be a survival mechanism. 😀 haha jk.

Is anyone here going to apply for that pre-matriculation program?

So, is it wrong to be so eager to get started with med school already?

Today, as I finish up my undergraduate study of film, in a graduate class for this department , I made a board game. Not like a really advanced nifty one...no I used a piece of cardboard and markers, just like I was in fourth grade.

I should probably be enjoying it 🙂 But, really I'd just like to get out of here and into biochem.

You need to print this out and look at it again about 8 months from now.

My thoughts exactly! It's kind of cute that you think that you WANT to be in biochem now, but I will hunt you down and find you in December and see how well you like it then. And if you're one of those special kind of people that actually enjoys biochem,...well, then, thank goodness there's people like you to make up for people like me!!!

usc-tex i think i met you at interviews in sa.

Is ludeuna still teaching biochem? still giving the vampire lecture?

roja said:

Yeah...that was the only good lecture he gave. That's another thing to the MS0s...outside of Biochem, you will have awesome lectures and professors. Inside of Biochem...well, that's another story. They're not all bad...

not *all* of them. but yeah, ther eis just no fun in biochem.

The grass is always greener on the other side 😀
All med students would be begging for biochem after two months of four hour lectures covering topics like how to draw on poster boards or...probably not... 😳

adorkable
I interviewed in December. I think I might have an idea who you are but...maybe not.

Where do I sign up for the posterboard class?!!!!!!! 😛

Hey guys,

Just a random question......I am currently studying Photosynthesis (blech) in biochem and I was wondering if they cover Photosynthesis in med school biochem??? Please say no! 😳 😀

I guess that's one good thing about med school biochem...you will only study human-relevant stuff; so, no. Some of it's kind of interesting, most of it's not.

It is basically a set of basic classes (around June) that preview some of the material which you will be learning during first year. It is taught by second year students. I did not do any premat stuff so I don't know how helpful it is. It seems like it might be a decent thing if you are comming from a non-medical background or have been out of school a long time. The volume is nothing like you will experience once real classes start. Mainly it seemed to be a decent thing for people to make some friends and hang out, as well as a haven for the occassional ultra obsessive-compulsive types who still don't quite realize that they are not premeds anymore. I don't want to diss the program for people who may really need some help, but at the same time I don't think it is necessary for the vast majority of students

Also... the Biochem is pretty tailored to human biochemistry, so no photosynthesis, much less diagramming of molecules, no chasing electrons etc. By the same token, people who have taken Biochem may find certain topics covered in greater depth in medical Biochemistry (i.e. heme/globin synthesis, fat transport and synthesis, metabolic processes and disorders etc.).

unless you plan on doing xylem and phloem replacement surgery you wont ever see that again 😀

Sounds good y'all!! I'm more motivated to study the human-related stuff--I can't stand this plant biochem 🙂

Yah, I always hated learning about photosynthesis and plants in general....humans are much more interesting! I was actually wondering whether we'd study photosynthesis in med school myself, as I'll be covering photosynthesis at the end of my Biochem class....oh well, it's only one lecture.

This may seem weird, but Biochem II was actually my favorite science class in college by far. For some reason I found memorizing amino acid and nucleotide synthesis pathways satisfying. I did have really good instructors, though. Any other Biochem fans out there? Of course, med school biochem may change my mind about the subject.

My favorite subject during undergrad was Organic Chemistry. I had one really great professor, and enjoyed learning the detailed amount of infomation. I enjoy Biochem as well, but prefer Organic.

My favorite class was animal physiology (basically human physiology) 😀

Biochem is sometimes interesting........but I liked physiology much better!

I had a BORING biochem professor (for both semesters) so it made the subject tiresome for me. I like O Chem and Physiology, but my FAVORITE class was anatomy by far! I am sure gross won't be quite as much "fun."

I'm actually looking forward to Gross Anatomy (somewhat). Not looking forward to smelling bad....but I remember dissecting the frog and the rat in high school bio and thinking to myself, "I better like this if I want to be a doctor." It turns out that I did nearly all of the cutting in both instances b/c I ended up with grossed-out female lab partners. I don't know what dissecting a human will be like, but the animals were kinda fun. Am I a dork?

Others may say differently, but I really enjoyed Gross Anatomy! Like you said, not the smelling bad part, but the rest of it was awesome! And my tank group ended up being great and we get along really well, so lab was really fun everyday! When it ended two weeks ago, I was actually sad and everyone was making fun of me. I wasn't really sad that the class was over, but we had such a good time in lab that I was sad the lab was over. Even though the class was my favorite class so far, hands down!

It really is a great experience and is like nothing else you have ever done before. All the sentimentel stuff they tell you at the White Coat Ceremony seems kind of hokey then...but it really did start to make sense once you were in lab. Someone like Lane might make fun of me for this now...but as much as he was walking around socializing every day, I don't know if he even knew what his cadaver looked like! 😀

Just kidding 😀 😀 😀

they used my leg on the final practical, thank you very much! that was the best looking popliteus muscle you'll ever see 😡

I loved anatomy. It was a really fun class and faculty were great. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Richards are AMAZING. 🙂

I was even an anatomy tutor for 8 weeks as a fourth year.
