Man, I'd sure hope so! That'd be mean of lane to urge us to live at Carlyle when in fact he thinks that the place is a dump!

I guess a bit too late anyway since I put the deposit down.

They were really nice apartments though and I think you will feel the same when you get the chance to see them.

Hey guys~

I posted the pics I took (about 75 or so) of Carlyle, The Vintage, and Promontory Pointe. They are at: piya317.blogspot.com

Click on "March 2005" under "Archives" on the right. The numbers in the captions correspond to the square footage of the apt in the pic. The Carlyle pics are at the top and bottom if you just want to jump to those! Some of the pics might not have captions--I think these are The Vintage pics.

I am new to this blog stuff, so the way I posted the pics might be ghetto! (I just started today!)

Enjoy,

-tx

It looks good. 🙂

Just called the folks @ Carlyle. They take big dogs 😀 That's a huge plus factor, given that my furry bundle of joy is ~75 pounds. I mentioned Lane and the lady was like, "Wow! Lane sure has a lot of friends!"

If other things don't prove a better deal, it's Carlyle Place. I'll know by Saturday. 🙂

Thanks to txguy, G0s2, Lane, etc. 👍

I called this morning, too! You probably called right after me. I mentioned Lane's name as well. It's gonna be one big happy family over there 😀

I talked to the Carlyle office today and they said several people have called in to secure apts! They loved the idea of having more UTHSCSA students--they really emphasize the family/community atmosphere there! And they want to put us all in the same building lol

When is everyone planning on moving in??? Me, July 1. Gives us a couple of weeks of hanging out/getting settled before we have to buckle down a bit.

I think two weeks will be plenty of time. I bet Thailand is going to be amazing. I'd really like to go threre someday...

I myself am doing the Europe thing but will be back to move just before July 1st.

Do you like living there??
i love it 🙂 the people are very friendly, it's really quiet, the pool and hot tub are great, the management is extremely helpful, there's plenty of parking...

the only issues i've had thus far are that my AC/heat has gone out twice (but maintenance was in my apartment no more than 30 minutes later to fix it) and the gate wasn't working for ~1 month (but they've since completely replaced it and it's working fine now). the weight room is a little weak, but gold's is within walking distance. i honestly think they're the best bet of any apartment complex 🙂

txguy, you're awesome! I'm calling tomorrow to secure a 1-1 for myself. It will probably be Carlyle or the Vintage for me....I'm so excited that I can't concentrate on my schoolwork!

In anticipation of moving to San Antonio, I thought we could share some good TexMex recipes to whet our appetites for what is to come!

Tortilla Soup

~16 ounce can tomatoes ( w/ green chilies if poss.)
2 tablespoons minced roasted garlic (fresh is fine too)
1 cup diced onion
1/4 cup coarsely cut cilantro
1/2 teaspoon sugar
8 cups chicken broth
2 lbs cubed chicken breast
1 can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce ( This is the key! 😉 )
shredded Cheddar cheese
1-2 ripe avocados cut up
Tortilla chips
Sour cream (optional)

Drain tomato juices into large pot with chicken broth. Chop drained tomatoes and add to broth along with the garlic, onion, cilantro, and sugar. Open chipotle pepper can and ladle some of that magic adobo sauce into the caldron. Deseed & mince 1-2 peppers depending on your spice desires and add to the broth as well. Bring to a boil while stirring then cover & simmer for 20 minutes.
Crunch up some tortilla chips in the bottom of your bowl and cover with cheese. Add avocados, cheese, sour cream,… and maybe some cheese  . Ladle soup over; serve it up HOT!. Should make around 8 bowls of goodness.

Hope ya’ll enjoy! Look forward to seeing others, and in the meantime I will try to perfect my chili rellenos for next week.

No problem, AD! We are all going to have alot of fun at Carlyle 😀 It will be easy to borrow/compare notes, get help, or otherwise socialize if we live near each other 👍

Hey lane or any other current student: What medical journals/publications do you get for free (or at a discounted rate)?? JAMA, I hope? The New England Journal? 😕 😕

I love to cook--well, I love to bake. Cookies, cakes, pies, and cheesecakes are my specialties. We should have potlucks next year....it might teach the guys a thing or two about cooking, which wouldn't hurt! 😉

you have to sign up for the AMA to get JAMA. we don't get anything free just for being in med school, although any and every journal you could ever want is at the library (and online)

BUMP!

Will officially be in SA next Tuesday (3/15) to look at apartments and stuff....I'm so excited (and I just can't hide it!) 😀

Carlyle Place!!! Why not live there when you will be hanging with us all the time there anyway?

Hey guys!
I know all of you are REALLY excited about Carlyle Place, but I would like to give you another option if for some reason CP doesn't work out for you. I am about to put in an application at a BRAND NEW complex called Broadstone Colonnade. About half of the complex is finished now, but should be complete by the time y'all would be ready to move in. It's absolutely amazing; a little pricey (but comparable to Carlyle), but definitely worth it. And did I mention the apartments will be BRAND NEW?!?! (That's a big selling point for me right now!) Good luck on your apartment searches; it's very exciting!!!! 🙂

Thanks for the info! 👍

The one bad thing about a new complex, is that the quality of management is unknown. And having lived at many apt complexes with poor management, I am a bit wary! (each complex I moved into at UT Austin was brand new, so I had no idea about how good or bad the management was)

Happy hunting, everyone :luck:

Anyone interested in sharing a house, say in Alamo Heights? I'm not convinced that the best living option is a high-priced apartment. Y'all remember what the TAMU FinAid lady said: "Live like a doctor while you're a student and you'll live like a student while you're a doctor."

I'm thinking of renting a decent-sized house in a quiet neighborhood, with a yard for my (well-behaved doggy) and a relatively close commute. Does anyone have suggestions? 🙂

**Edit: My doggy 😍

Ok just to vent on a totally unrelated topic, I was supposed to go see Kenny Chesney next weekend and he has moved his concert to MAY 15! That's soooo long from now 🙁

Alamo Heights is one of the most expensive regions in San Antonio, so sharing a house out there would probably cost more money than any of you would spend living in the Medical Center. Also, Alamo Heights isn't exactly the closest region to the Medical Center: it might be a long commute (trust me, I've lived in SA almost all my life).

It is much better if you can find housing either within the Medical Center or close by (just north of the medical center, etc)

Actually, I lived in alamo hieghts for two years (3rd and 4th year) of med school. It was great and I wish I had lived there for ALL of med school. The commute is only bad if you have only ever lived in san antonio.

Its about 10 minutes. Maybe 15-20 on a 'bad' day.

I've already set up time with a realtor come the 14th. I was probably looking closer to the med school though. I thought heights might be out of my price range and was planning on having her show me homes in 78229 and 78230 right around the med center...but maybe not...my rents still live right near the med center so maybe living so close wouldn't be such a good thing 🙄 (or maybe it'd be great...a short commute if my laundry ever got too overwhelming)

Well, I'm not beholden to Alamo Heights or anything. I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility. What are some of the other decent neighborhoods around/near the med center?

78240 I don't know very well, but they're building new houses out there and they look pretty nice. Closer in you got things like Colonies north, on the other side of 10 from the health science center or further out Castle Hills. On the other side of NW Military you've got like Oak Meadow and along that new stretch of Wurzbach you've got some new subdivisions...those new homes might be pretty pricey.

Really, because San Antonio is such a suburban city, everything around the health science center, even though some of it is pretty old, it's all pretty nice. And if you go further out from 410 you can find newer homes which are nice as well.

That's right. However, friendship can be restored by doing me a favor. Are you truly my favorite Myrmidon? If so, I need txguy rubbed out. He's been too cheerful lately, and we can't have that.

Vote for me!!!! :horns:

Incidently, today, I got to tour the new clinical sciences center that you guys will be using next year. That place is world class and state of the art... probably the nicest clinic environment you will work in. They have both an OR and ICU setup in there to practice procedure skills, and they have an incredible monitoring system for doing evaluations. You guys are fortunate to be going to a place with this sort of facility.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know yet one more reason you are comming to a good place. 🙂

bu-bu-but they tore down the FOUNTAIN.

It was a nice fountain but just remember it's in a better place now, fountain heaven.

but you can't get in trouble by dancing in the fountain after phase.

Just wanted to wish everyone a very happy SPRING BREAK! 😛

EvoDevo said:
What's that?? 😕

It's a magical place involving lots of booze, bikinis, and increased risk of melanoma.

When do we meet our classmates? Is there a time before white coat ceremony? I wanted to see if I could find a roommate before all the good apartments dissapear.. or else I'll have to build a boat...and live and float around the riverwalk.
