Believe me, I'm not as studious these days as you'd think! I have lost all motivation to study and do well in my classes (keep in mind that I graduated one year ago). I thought that taking extra classes would be *fun*, but what the HELL was I thinking? Anyway, I would drop all of my classes, but then I'd feel like a lazy quitter!

Oh, and in a few hours I'm going to eat sushi! 😀

Hey I'm also taking classes "for fun," since I graduated already too (2001!). I have still been keeping up with my classes as well (I can't help it), but I certainly don't study on Saturdays! 😛 Go tear up that sushi lol 😀

*EDIT* I'm going to go tear up some Texas de Brazil! 👍 Cya later!

Hah! As much as I think don't want to like the Patriots (b/c they're the team of my hated ex-boss) I can't help myself. They truly do embody the "There's no 'I' in 'team'" concept. Plus their coach is wickedly good.

Go Pats!!

i'm rootin for the eagles since they don't haven't gotten here in a long while. i believe the pats have 2 rings out of the past 3 yrs.

As a Cowboys fan I cannot in good conscience ever root for the Eagles (or Giants or Redskins or 49ers)...so I suppose I'll be screaming for the Pats.

I had a question for you guys. Does anyone know why SA doesn't release their stats to US News?

So did you defend your dissertation yet? I defended my thesis back in November and it was a sweet, sweet day! 🙂

I am still bustin my hump on it. I am currently writing a paper for pub. Once that is under review, my committee will most likely give me the nod to start the dissertation. Time is running out and I honestly cannot tell yet whether it will happen. It has been a hellish PhD process to be truthful.

What did you get your degree in????

Happy about the Pats. Closer than I wanted it to be. Now that we have attained dynasty status, it is time for another team to take the wheel.

Congratulations by the way!!! I imagine that it would be.

Lane (or anybody else): Are you happy living at Carlyle? What do you like about it and would you recommend we stay there? (I'm looking for a 1 bedroom) 😕

And does anybody else who posts here stay at Promontory Pointe or The Vintage? If so, do you like it there? 😕

Thanks!

Man, sorry that it's been such a struggle. I know that last year you applied, apparently believing that you'd be done by c/o 2008 matriculation. What's been the delay?

Congrats on the pub! It's going to be a lovely feeling to see your name in print (if it hasn't happened already). I've got two pubs coming out...one by summer (a review that's already been submitted) and the other that I'll start writing prolly next week. Even though I've graduated and left the lab, my PIs still wants me to write the thing. 😛

Oh! Word to the wise: whether or not your committee has given you the green light, I'd start writing anyway. Seriously. Writing that thing is like Hercules rolling the boulder up the hill - it never seems to end and you often end up back @ the beginning. We've only got ~five months left! 😱

Genetics and Development. I studied the transcriptional regulation of a pro-apoptotic gene called reaper in D. melanogaster. You?

Yeah, congrats! I didn't have a dog in the hunt but it was nice to see the team of teams win another. Too bad McNabb freaks out under pressure. They could have won the game. And how about T.O.??? 😱

Hey man:

I was reading through the c/o 2008 thread and I saw them discussing those apartments.

heheh I read through that too.....there's also some nice info on the timing of packets, fin. aid, where to buy equipment, what to do about books, etc....

Hopefully next year's class will find our thread useful 😀

Mad props to TO!!! At least he knows he did all he could to try and help them win.....did you see him telling Mcnabb to "relax"

I also noticed that we already have more posts by this time than that class did. I guess that our year just seems to do everything bigger and better. 😎 :horns:

 Yeah. Honestly, you gotta wonder what could have been if the Eagles had someone like......Mike Vick. 😱 Anyway, I shall not diss T.O. anymore. Too bad he couldn't do another Sharpie thing this game.

*** Announcement ***

Dizzydog and I are thinking of taking a road trip from Houston to San Antonio ~2 weeks from now in order to check things out. Anyone want to meet up in SA to check out places, have dinner, drink, etc?

reaper, cool fly p53/DNA damage regulated gene. Michael Brodsky, who ID'd that pathway is faculty in my department.

I study apoptosis as well and have identified a novel gene target of NF-kB that either sensitizes to or induces apoptosis. The protein binds and inhibits Bcl-2 activity. Competitive field as you know. My PI has a draft and is looking it over. Here, here on writing the thesis before the go ahead and I am starting to do that. 5 months is going to haul!!!

No one forced you to move to New York. 🙄

*Thinks about NYC's frozen winter, shudders*

Me too 🙁

Actually they got Shiner out here in LA last year. At least the grocer near campus. I was very excited. So, basically I just want to eat TC.

Its okay. I soothed myself with sushi, delivered to my door. 😀 And the fact that I can have vietnamese, indian, and any other ethnic food delivered. 😀

When I move back to tejas, I will miss things about NYC.

i'm very happy here - the management is very friendly, the maintenance team is quick to respond to any problems, and the complex is really clean overall. i like the layout of the apartments, but that's personal preference. there's really nothing to dislike about this place - it's quiet, safe, clean, and the units are pretty big.
the only drawback is that it's kinda difficult to walk to class because there's no sidewalk on our side of babcock - i end up driving 2 minutes to park across louis pasteur and walk from there.
if yall are coming to town anytime soon i'd be happy to give you a little tour. we won't have any info about our little weekend until march-ish since we have exams coming up and no one does anything productive other than study leading up to them.

Whoa, food right to the door....must be nice! They do some of that here in Austin, but it's typically pretty expensive. With the nice, non-snowy weather in Tejas (though it's been really rainy/cloudy/cold lately), there's no excuse NOT to go out sometimes!

Yeah, I bet NYC is nice...even here in the "ghetto" of LA there's lotsa delievery options...thai, indian...I'm gonna miss that as well.

I used to live in San Antonio -- you kids are gonna love it!!! 🙂

Filled out the FAFSA today. One more box checked off.

Does anyone know if we need to have the parent's portion filled out? I think other Tx schools ask students to, due to special scholarships/grants/loans. Does UTHSCSA have the same thing?

No sidewalks? 🙁

Thanks for the tips! Looking forward to receiving more information 😀

I was up late last night watching the Discovery Health channel. They had "Trauma, Life in the E.R." on and the ER was.....

University Hospital @ UTHSCSA! 👍 All the resident's and student's white coats had the orange university emblem. They even interviewed a couple of MS3's. 😎

I was so proud!

Whoa, that's cool! I love watching those medical Discovery shows. They're so much more realistic than shows like "ER" and "House." Not to diss "ER" and "House", but they are a little too overdramatic/unrealistic for my tastes. 😛

Have a good Tuesday everybuddy!

Just a quick note: You can verify whether or not they received your letter of intent by contacting the Registrar's Office. Just wanted to save you guys the hassle of going through four different people like I had to 🙂 It doesn't take very long, they apparently have a list and they're just checking off names as they come in.

Thanks for that, Aggiegal.

FYI, the number for the Med School Registrar is 210.567.2659

Iinnnnnnteresting!

You're right, you ARE in a competitive field. Did you go to CSH in 2003? I was there in 2001 and I'd be interested in going again this year....but I don't think that's going to happen. We'll have to talk about your work when we get out to school. It sounds pretty interesting!

*Edit* I think that I've figured out your PI. Good stuff! 😉

The apoptosis meeting at CSH is Sept 21-24 and I would still like to go even though med school will be in full swing. We should take a trip. I bet you still have no idea who my PI is. This lab is not known really for apoptosis. It will be good to have someone to talk to about this stuff in med school.

roja said:
they shot this when I was in med school!

Maybe they'll come back when and if I am an attending at UH. 😀

I hope you come back when we are all there.

Well, if I do a fellowship, it will be the summer of 2007. If not, then in about 17 mos!

Thats (fingers crossed) if I can hopefully get a job at UH.

You'll have to do an EM rotation though. I promise I'll be gentle. 😀

That'd be really cool. Maybe we can get a discounted admission? Or get UTHSCSA to pay for it? 😉 😀

its against the rules to be cruel to innocent little med students.
