Sad, yet predictable. I just read a chapter in my Psychopharmacology book on nicotine and cigarette smoking, and I promise you that after reading this chapter, you'd probably want to kick the habit for good! Sadly, many medical students start smoking during medical school to handle the stress and anxiety (my dad was one; he now has an intense aversion to the the habit....very puzzling indeed).
yeah, it *is* a disgusting habit.

How's your "do-well-in-class" motivation doing, AD?

Is that why your froggy quit smoking today?

Not very motivated to do anything today...need to go for a run.

Anyone else get a letter from Panhandle-Plains Student Loan Center? I am wondering if they are actually affiliated with UTHSCSA...the letter would make you believe so.

I think I got something from them a while back. Don't know if it's the same letter as I haven't been home yet.

As for the frog: HA! No. But I saw that frog today and it totally reflected my feeling this morning. AND please note that the froggy is holding a Lifer Cup. 😀 Ugh. I went to bed late and got up early to take my dog to the vet.

You know, I've been cycling alot after work instead of running. It agrees with my body more. How far/fast are you running these days?

Just 2 miles a day / 6 days a week ~6:30-7:00 min mile pace. Trying to slowly build a base of mileage back up and incorporate more weights into my workouts.

Went for a long ride at Canyon Lake last weekend...It was absolutely gorgeous. Lots of very scenic places to bike around San Antonio. Do you usually bike right there on the bayou?

Damn. That's a good pace. You know, back in the day I'd run my 3 mile PFT as follows: 1st mile, 5:30, second mile, 6:15, 3d mile 7:15-:30. I could never chill out enough when I started. I wonder if I can get in shape enough to go running with you when school starts?

Yeah, unfortunately. However it's one of the few safe/smooth places to ride in the city and it doesn't take all day to get there/ride/come back.

You know the good places to ride in SA, then?

No, not really...Canyon Lake is not too close but worth the drive (I think it was about 40-50 minutes.) I know there are good routes much closer, I just haven't found them yet. Maybe I will scout them out in May and show you when you arrive in July!

That'd be good. Perhaps Canyon Lake on the weekends, early in the semester.

Well, let's just say that things will be better after I get this 12-page research paper turned in (due April 28). Besides that, the only thing I really hate is working in the lab...the work is BORING as all get-out and the lab manager literally seems to have PMS 24-7! I'm couting down the days....SO EXCITED about relaxing this summer and moving in to my new apartment!

Hard to believe some people still think its worth it to smoke...This guy comes into the radiation oncology treatment center (Head & Neck division) at MD Anderson every Wednesday for his check up smelling like an ash tray. Unbelievable.

Hey,
I too will be attending UTHSCSA in the fall. A friend of mine, who is a MS1, told me about this thread, and I have spent entirely too much time the last two days reading it from February to now. Your enthusiasm has made me all the more excited about moving to San Antonio, and your tips on the apartments has probably saved me from having to fly down. SO THANK YOU!

I see that a number of you are moving down in early July, but I might not be able to move until the week of the 17th - 24th. I am hoping that the week between registration on the 25th and classes starting on the 1st will be free time to acclimate. Does anyone know what we are doing that week? Do you think we will have official things going on?

I hope all is well. It was supposed to get up to 70 today in Boston for the first time since Halloween, which it did if you live more than two miles from the coast. Unfortunately I do not, so the high was only 51! I cannot wait to get back to Texas!

Welcome to the thread!

howdy! unfortunately you'll have a bunch of orientation stuff to do throughout that week so you will be busy. we're trying to cut down on the mandatory hours, which should help, but yall don't have the full month of CIC this year so that week will be your only time to go out, explore the city, and meet your classmates in a group setting before classes start.

i'm an MS1, so if you have any questions feel free to PM me or just ask in here 🙂

Welcome from Worcester, Mass!!!!

Hey Lane or any current student who might have the scoop--

Any updates on the new curriculum ( schedule, classes, times, etc...) and your thoughts about it or the possible welcome weekend? I'm getting a bit concerned that we (new students) can't find any informaton regarding the new curriculum.

Thanks 😀

To second ladyybugg...if any MSI or IIs know anything about the "welcome weekend" let us know asap, so we can make plans for the rest of april...

hope everyone is looking forward to hanging out before classes get started and hitting up a little of the nightlife before july 24th and big first day of class...i think SA is going to be awesome and I am looking forward to meeting everyone...

have y'all watched grey's anatomy....i am still out on my verdict if the show is good or not....

Patrick Dempsey is hot! Reason alone to watch the show. Show is cute but totally inaccurate- I'm watchin' anyway 😍

I'll third the vote for wanting to know more about next year's curriculum. I need to get a mental picture of what my days are gonna be like next year.

Haven't started watching Grey's Anatomy yet....but I think I'll start this weekend, as I've heard nothing but juicy things about it from you guys and my other friends....

Yeah! TOMORROW IS FRIDAY, AND THUS, AN END TO ANOTHER WEEK! 😛

Well, guys, the Recruitment Committee presidents were just announced earlier this week so Welcome Weekend plans can finally get somewhere. Lane is working diligently on it 🙂 , but please be patient with us because we have phase 5 exams next week. There's alot going on, so we will let you know as soon as possible.

As far as the new curriculum, they're not even letting us (current students) know about it yet. Or maybe I should say, there are a select few in our class that know some about it, but Dr. Clare has asked that we keep it hush-hush because it is still being worked on.

Nobody is purposely trying to keep y'all in the dark. As I said, there is alot going on right now, but we (and the school) will try to keep you updated as the need arises. Please be patient!!! I know it's hard, but it will all come together and you will know everything you need to in due time.

I hope i didn't sound impatient. It's just that a Hush-Hush curriculum and one that is being "worked on" doesn't sound too good. I just hope we don't have a UCLA med school problem (they redid their curriculum and to make a long story short the admin is freaking out because students can't pass the boards)

let the welcome weekend and curriculum suspense continue (i know that we will find out in soon enough and.....before you know it, we will all be finding out our destination for residency 😉 ) thanks for your help MSI amigos and good luck on your exams...

ladyybugg where are you from in CA?

That sounds like what happened at UTMB when they had that major curriculum overhaul and had to iron out lots of problems amidst low board scores (i.e. initially there was no pharmacology taught in lecture--students had to learn on their own!)........ :scared:

Yes, I watched it (I had time, since this has been a slow week for me). It was good....but then again, I can't really remember an episode that wasn't good!

Anyone else planning on seeing Sahara tonite? Tonite is movie nite for me! 😀

I have some family in the L.A.-Santa Monica-and Arcadia area...I was just there for the Rose Bowl to see my Longhorns beat Michigan...Are you still going to school in the LA area?

Jessica Alba 👍 👍 👍 👍 😀

P.S. Has anyone read "House of God?" I picked it up the other day and I couldn't even get through the first 30 pages! I'm thinking I should wait until after my intern year to read it........

Spiffy! I want to see Sahara but I won't have time this weekend. Can you give us feedback once you do? 🙂

And yes, Jessica Alba! 😱 You know, I'd never been a fan before this movie, but damn! 😉

I'm off to San Antonio this weekend. Gonna settle things once and for all. 🙂 And though I know I'll regret these words.....I can't wait to get on with school.

No, and yet EVERYONE talks about it. What's so bad?

I tell you, a book that will scare/depress you is "Intern Blues." If I ever say that I'm considering IM someone please slap me. :scared:

Well for me, it was a little too dark and morbid (it was a real downer!).....I think "House of God" is a love it or hate it book--so you might want to take it for a spin in case you are in the "love it" club 🙂

I started reading another book, "Hot Lights, Cold Steel" and it also portrays the lows and highs of residency, though not in such a dark and disturbed fashion (its hilarious and heartfelt!)

Have a good wknd folks 👍

It's a good day!

- I sucessfully generated my first DNA expression construct! w00t!
- The weather is GORGEOUS!
- I get to play wingman tonight.

Evo: Nice work!

To ppl moving into Carlyle: I just called the leasing office and they have already put me in an apt! (I'm right next to the mail and the pool 😎 ) If you put a deposit down and are on the waiting list, see if they have an apt for you too.

With all due respect, when organizations say that something is "hush hush" and "it will all come together," my BS antenna get to twitching.

I wonder why no one can tell us at least the broad outlines of the curriculum? Are the class hours going to be reduced/stay the same (because this was one of the things the school was dinged about by the accredidation committee)? Is Gross going to be year-long or one semester? How are the CIC courses going to be integrated into the curriculum? What about the new clinical skills center? Are we going to use it at all in the first year? Is the school planning a massive switch to PBL, a la' UTMB a few years back? :scared: I'm feeling very much in the dark.

I mean, there has to be at the very least a guiding vision that we can at least know about. I am feeling (and I know I'm not the only one) very much left in the dark when compared to other schools. MS0's at other TX schools already know about their curriculum, welcome weekends, etc. Could you guys at the VERY LEAST tell us what date you're PLANNING on having the welcome weekend? If you don't know, how much advance warning will we get? Schedules are tight for us too (heck, I have my brother's wedding stuff happening throughout July, for example).

Again, I realize that everyone is busy and such. I'm not trying to upset anyone or start something. But it's disconcerting when people pat us on the head and say, "Don't worry! Everything will be fine." Because history tells us to worry when that happens.

Thanks in advance.

I really wanted to see Sin City tonight, or even Sahara, but I got out voted. So instead its Fever Pitch. I hope its not a chick flick. Anyone else going to see it? Evo, I hope you are because I already got your ticket!

I'm just concerned that this "hush-hush" and "top secret" stuff might mean something bad....and when txguy brought up UTMB's failing board scores, it kinda freaked me out.

i'll type a more thorough post tonight, but rest assured that the material will NOT change - 90% of it is just a rearrangement of the schedule so it'll be presented in a more streamlined manner.

Yeah, they said that I would have an address by April. I will call them on Monday.

Well I just got back from San Antonio where I signed a lease at Broadstone Colonnade! 👍 I'm so excited to move now! At this point, it doesn't matter what the curriculum is like....I'm just glad to be there. Whatever the outcome, I know we'll all do great! Yes yes I am the optimist. You'll definitely find that out when you meet me in the fall. 🙂

As for right now, senioritis has reached it's peak as I'm actually putting off writing my social theory paper. A long summer off will fix that problem though. I can't wait to meet everyone!

You would go ahead and sign a lease....you know who this is. Take care and all, you'll do awesome in the fall...as for me, i'm hoping to get in this coming year. Where?? not sure, but somewhere for sure

Hey y'all - I'm technically new to the thread, but I've been reading it for a while. I'm in the UTHSCSA c/o 2009 as well, and I couldn't be more excited to meet everyone. 😀

I currently live in San Antonio and have for some time, so I'm more than happy to answer questions for any newcomers!

DrSaxon - I, too, signed a lease with Broadstone Colonnade. 🙂 I signed yesterday and am really excited about it. I went to look at the apartments again today with my folks, and I think you and I were probably there at the same time. Creepy! I'm moving in July 1, so I hope to see you (and others) around!

Welcome everyone........I should probably be asleep 🙄 ......

God forbid we have an unorganized academic year.......but at least we'll have each other to lean on 😳 😳

nite,

Welcome to the thread, divadoc! Hrmmm....maybe I should check out the Broadstone Colonnade. How far away is it from the med center? Is there any type of security (gates/video cameras)? I learned yesterday that my boyfriend's car was STOLEN from his apartment complex the night before....and we live in a VERY safe part of Austin (Far West area). His apartment complex is both gated and has video cameras, but the car was stolen nonetheless. Thus, I am a bit paranoid right now! I just don't understand how some people can be so terrible and cruel.... 🙁

On a more positive note, I'm looking forward to watching Grey's tonite. They ran some re-runs last night, and yes, it looks like good TV series (uh oh, how will I have time for Alias, the OC, AND Grey's Anatomy)?

Broadstone is great! You should totally check it out!!! 👍 It's not far from the medical center at all, the drive will probably take about 10 minutes in the morning, because it is on the other side of I-10. But the good thing is that is a brand new complex (not yet finished) and set back a little ways from everything. That is, it is not off of an incredibly busy street, nor is it surrounded by other apartment complexes. I will be moving in at the beginning of July and am very excited about it. (If you couldn't tell!) It is gated, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any cameras. This is a relatively safe part of town though, as far as San Antonio goes. Although like you said, car thieves can hit anywhere. :scared:

Thanks for the info. futrdrbaker! I'll definitely check it out.

To Mr. Lane: Does living on Babcock pose a traffic problem? I mean, the street is so busy....do you sometimes find yourself unable to turn into or out of the Carlyle apartment complex? Also, do you feel like the complex is pretty safe?

i've never had to wait more than 30 seconds to make a turn on babcock - the only weird thing about the intersection, though, is that you can't turn left directly out of the complex. you turn right, go about 100 feet, then flip a U-turn to go south. again, i've never had any problems with traffic.

i've also never had any safety issues with the complex. i actually sleep a lot of nights with the doors unlocked (oops) but i don't feel like i HAVE to padlock it or anything (unlike the place i lived in college).

and for the record, my travel time from my front door in the morning to the lecture hall door is 7 minutes 😀

I felt that Broadstone was exceptionally safe, and as previously mentioned, it is, in fact, gated. I seem to remember that there is a courtesy officer (SAPD) that patrols the complex as well. I've lived in many parts of San Antonio, and I feel that this area is comparatively very safe.

My mother drove from the medical center to I-10 and Wurzbach (right next to Broadstone Colonnade) and timed it at about 11 minutes. This was under fairly light traffic, as well. I am conservatively anticipating about 20-25 minutes, just to make sure that I get there and parked in time.

Come live at Broadstone! The more the merrier! 🙂

Anybody watch Grey's Anatomy tonight? 😀
