Hello everyone!!
can someone help me!!! I have been accepted into these two schools but do not know which I should go to..first, I would lovvvveee to live in NYC but then again heard NYU does not prepare you that well in terms of clinical experiences and is known for their 20 percent failure rate...on the other hand, SA has a stronger dental eductation but I do not know if I really want to stay in SA for four years!! In addition, I heard SA does not get that much money anymore so a lot of good professors haveleft....does anyone who went to those schools can actually give me some cons and pros for each school!! plz help me 😳

NYU actually has a great clincal like Stony Brook. I dont know where you got your info from but its wrong.

Are you seriously deciding? Living in NY as a student???!!!! 😕 Read some of the threads about NYU housing.

If this isn't an obvious decision than you should probably go to NYU

Hey long time lurker here just wanted to let you that in my opinion SA is the WORST place to live. I have lived while in undergrad and hated every moment of it, not only is it boring and dull but the heat is unbearable half the year. Also my cousin who is a fourth year at UTHSCSA said that 11 ppl failed the boards II and a couple of people have had to repeat every year (there are ppl in her class who should have already graduated) so their fail rate is also alarming. If I am fortunate enough to get into dental school in two years then UTHSCSA would be my last choice! 😡

Too much bashing for your first post, dude.!!!

If you used to live in this area, you should be used to the heat and NYU's winter is not exactly sexy, you know.
Did your cousin cared to elaborate the change in Board II and the fact that 11/100+ is actually good for this year board II. Some school did worst. And lastly have you look at other schools fail rate?
You can also save yourself and some cash but not applying to UTHSCSA when you apply. You will make Texas applicants very happy.

The change you are referring to is that you have to score atleast a 75 in EACH section as opposed to overall 75 happened two years ago, meaning that the students who took the exam were aware of the change. Not sure where your hostility is coming from last time I checked I have the right to express my opinion with out getting confronted. The OP is having second thought about living in SA so I thought my experience over the last 3 years would be helpful so that is why I posted.

Of course, UTHSCSA might have you as their last choice.

How could anything you said be any use to the op when your information is second handed and you don't bring any real comparison of the two schools in question to the table?

NYU dental student here. I would kill you if you choose NYU over your texas school. Come here only if you can graduate with $0 in student loans :meanie:

Pinkjudee,

I'm not much of a poster on this forum, but I would like to offer you my opinion.

Consider what stood out the most to you between both NYU and UTHSCSA. Did one school feel like it was more meant for you? What is it about San Antonio that makes you think you cannot live there for 4 years? When you're in school, yes you will have some down time to hang out, but a lot of those 4 years will be occupied by studying. Do you have any friends that are current dental students at UTHSCSA and NYU? If so, you should consider asking what their experience is like being a dental student at each school and what it's like living in those respective areas.

I am also a Texas resident, and would love to stay in Texas because tuition is A LOT cheaper and I would be closer to my family and friends. So honestly, if I were you, I would go to UTHSCSA. I did a one year dental laboratory sciences program at UTHSCSA a year ago, and San Antonio was really not that bad. I still make occasional trips out there. It's a beautiful city if you give it a chance and the students and faculty at UTHSCSA are very friendly.

I'm sure a lot of people can agree with me here, but I'm really envious that you got accepted in a Texas school. It's very competitive to get into a Texas dental school and you should feel very proud to have these options. Whatever you decide on will be the right choice because everything happens for a reason.

Good luck!

My first hand experience is actually living in SA which the OP was contemplating. That is what I "bring to the table".

Thanks very much and I do feel very lucky to get accepted into a Texas dental school since I know how competitive it is in Texas. I have been asking a lot of information from the students in both schools and there are cons and pros for each school. I am hoping to gather more information so I can make a decision soon 🙂

OP, are you crazy? Tuition and fees itself are only $80K combined for four years if you attend UTHSCA. If you were to attend NYU, your 1 year cost of attendance is greater than the four years tuition and fees combined at UTHSCSA. You of course would need to include cost of living for the total cost of attendance for UTHSCA, so let's say you need $18K per year (I'm assuming living cost is cheap in Texas so $1500/month x12). So you can graduate from D-School with only $152K compared to the astronomical $400K at NYU, not taking account of accrued interest. To make the deal better for you, the actual accrued loan difference will be even bigger because majority of your loans will be unsubsidized. So go to UTHSCA and enjoy taking vacations or practicing in NY after you graduate. Else wise, have fun in NYU.

I am an NYUCD 4th year student.

If you go to dental school to save money, and not to the better school or the school which is WHERE you want to be, then you will never be a successful dentist.

Anyone who says NYU does not prepare their students clinically is either lying, or misinformed. To this point I have done two bridges, 7 crowns, restored 4 implants, over 100 restorations, over 6 removable prosthesis, and more. AND I STILL HAVE A FULL YEAR OF CLINIC LEFT!

In addition, the blatant rumor that NYU has a 20% failure rate is just not true. Probably 5% of the class over the 4 years doesn't make it, and those students don't deserve to be dentists, period.

Go with the school you like more. In 10 years, the money will not be an issue, especially if you reap the benefits NYU has to offer.

to the OP.

Here is your monthly student loan payments if you decide to borrow full $90K per year to get your awesome DDS degree at NYU: about $3000 after-tax each month for 25 years after graduation. I dont care how "good" people claim NYUCD to be, it is not worth paying 3K a month for the next 25 years of your life. Now, if you can inherit a buttload of monies to pay NYUCD, then come here and you can party like a rock star (after your first two years)

Choose NYU is you are one of those "You should never consider the cost of a good education a burden" people.

Choose UT if you're one of those "Cheapest school I get into" people.

You'll have a chance to learn stuff at NYU that you won't at UT--for example, NYU has the #1 implant curriculum in the country. Then again, if you're motivated to do so, you can always take continuing education classes to learn stuff you didn't get a chance to learn in school.

For what it's worth, one of my classmates transferred from NYU to UTHSCSA for familial reasons and he says he would transfer back to NYU in a heartbeat if he could. When I asked him the biggest difference, he said the pace of the education (UT was a lot more drawn out, particularly clinical procedures) and the interactions with the faculty (NYU felt more like they were your colleagues while UT felt more like they were your parents).

Thanks a lot for all the info. People do say UT felt more like your parents and since a lot of them are ex-militaries, they are nice but very strrict on you. On the other hand, NYU is more like independent studying style. Can you share more about your clinical experiences with me? like how many crowns do you need to do before gratuation and do you actually try to compete to get cases? In addition, is the NE board harder than the west regional board?

I'll take it too! I am going to NYU and did not get an acceptance from SA... If SA accepted me I would take it in a heartbeat!!!
I am still deciding but if I do decide to go to NYU, I hope either of yall can get my spot 🙂

yes. I m a first year here. It may sound like I am bashing NYU, but I am not. I m only trying to help you not become a slave to bigger debt. I don't come from a wealth family so I need to borrow a significant amount of $$ to fund my education, even with partial family support. This was the only school I was accepted to.

Sorry if this gets ppl upset, but this is what I was referring to about fail rate at UTHSCSA and something my cousin also mentioned to me.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=632022&highlight=private+dental+schools

There is nothing in this entire thread that says anything about the school in general. I can direct you to more thread about NYU, but I won't because it is useless. No one claimed DS is easy or fair. I encountered unfair situation even in undergrad. So what?

To Op:
I have been to both schools and liked them both. They both have different pros and cons, but you will get good education in both of these schools. But for the life if me, I could not imagine leaving in a bedroom that is converted by pressurized walls when I pay that much for housing and school. Hell, with the 250K (PLUS interest) that I save; I can live there for years more comfortably. You will not have much time and funds left to do any of what you may be fantasizing. Now if you are offered full scholarship that pays for housing then by all means go to NYU and experience NYC.

Hey Op

I was in a similar situation with Oklahoma and SA. I ended picking SA simply because of in-state tuition. Lots of people told me that each school has pros and cons and in the end they are all pretty equal, so why not just save 100g+. After I made my decision a dentist told me that it was a smart move because going to a Texas school makes it easier to practice dentistry in Texas.

Hope to see you in July, but if not, good luck!

Go to a cheaper school. I honestly do not think that the experience will be as glamorous as you may expected it to be.

Stop listening to all these dumbies! Go to NYU and enjoy the city. I really really really want your SA spot.

From what I've heard and seeing the stats, UTHSCSA is the best dental school in Texas.

And to the OP, if this is seriously a dilemma, choose NYU and miss out on a good education at a much cheaper price. There are so many Texas residents that actually want your spot.

Did you fail one year of clinic?

You just brought up a thread that's a year old...... were you just googling NYU dental for fun?

You can get a DDS^2 at SA and still owe less than 4 years at NYU...

Considering this thread is from last year, OP already made his decision a long time ago and is now a D2.
