I had a nightmare I went to business school, it was horrible. I couldn't imagine an education that doesn't involve memorizing innumerable pathways. Blah!

That's my biggest fear too, school without memorization! How boring.

Good times... hung out with other SDNers tonight (yeah, so cool). 😎

I think that facebook link works if you are from UT Austin, but outside the home University you need the AIM URL.

Ah...well, that makes sense now. Did you have fun with the other SDNers? Wish I lived in Houston so I could meet everyone too!

I know! I scoff at my PhD friends who actually have to *reason* things out for a living. 😎

Yeah, well, you'll be close enough to H-town in a matter of months. 🙂

You should make some friends in Houston and barter with them: they can stay with you in Galveston when they want to chill on the beach, and you can crash on their couch when you decide to leave Galvetraz for the weekend.

Hey all. I'll be joining you guys in August. Has anyone actually made living arrangements? I put a deposit on an apartment called The Club (on Seawall). Just wondering if anyone might be there.

And do you have to be non-traditional to do pre-matric? I would love to quit my job and get an early start.

When is everyone moving down there? Is there a second look weekend?

Wow, you put your deposit down this early? What did you like about "The Club?"

No, you don't have to be non-traditional to do pre-matric, it's just that the program is designed for/ geared towards students who have been out of school for a bit. But you can quit your job to do it - that's why I signed up! 🙂

I haven't heard of second look, yet, but we'll keep our eyes out for more info.

My parents actually went down there for Mardi Gras and looked at apartments for me. It's brand new, and they recommended it. I figured it would be fine for at least first year. I just wanted to get my living situation out of the way i guess. The complex is about 8 miles away off of Seawall.

How do I sign up for pre-matric (assuming it's not too late)? Do you just get to do it, or do they have to choose you?

Has anyone heard anything about scholarships??? I was reading last year's thread, and it seemed like everyone was getting them.

If you have not received a letter about it, you can just call them (I think enrollment services🙁409) 772-1215 ) and ask to sign up. I forgot when the deadline for registration is (it might have been February 28th, but it can't hurt to call).

Finaid question:

So I had my FAFSA submitted the Feb 7, does anyone know when we can expect to hear something back on scholarships or finaid?

Hey, just wanted to remind everyone to get their transcripts in by the 11th...

Crap, totally forgot about that. Can somebody post or PM me the Enrollment Services address where I'm supposed to send the transcript?

Thanks,
Ben

I called the enrollment office early in February. They said they would be contacting us via email. You may want to call them to make sure they received your information. When I had called, they said they hadn't started yet so I'm going to call them again soon.

Btw, is UTMB = 013976?

Did y'all read in the TX waitlist thread that UTMB might have accepted 28 too many students? Yikes 😱 . Wonder how they'll sort that out if it's true :meanie:.

It turns out to be true. I just checked my mail and my offer of acceptance was rescinded by UTMB stating they had overpopulated the class by over 25. I did however get put on the waitlist though.

so not funny!!!!!!!!!!

I was about to say...if UTMB did reject some of its current students wouldn't the waitlisted people be shifted back another 25?? Scaring us waitlisters isn't cool.

That does look nice...I wonder how pricey it is?

That does look pretty nice. How far is it from the school?
H2doc...do you happen to know the prices since your parents have already checked it out?

I wish I could afford a place that nice. Looks like I'll be living in the crappiest apartments on the island due to my budget. 🙁

Yeah, that's been happening for the last few years - the most common explanation I've heard is that more applicants accepted their invitation than UTMB expected. But usually by the first week of classes it wittles down to about 210 students.

They are certainly not going to rescind acceptances (unless you commit a felony or don't complete a requirement, and even those are flexible).

Luckily Galveston's pretty affordable... tho for the debt-phobic, the sub-$400 medical frats are tempting. 😎

Yeah, I don't think I wanna know how much those places cost... cuz, like a friend of mine who used to sell knives used to say, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." 🙂

Those start around $700 for a 1-bedroom. The prices vary depending on size, view (i guess), floor, etc. It's kind of expensive for Galveston, but not that bad compared to places around other TX med schools. According to Mapquest, it's about an 8-mile drive down Seawall to campus.

Other than living costs, what benefits come with joining a fraternity? I'm somewhat clueless on the whole medical frat thing.

wdarli,
Last night I was doing some research with my fiance, we were looking at apartmentrating.com I think and these four seem good:
Casa Caribe, Driftwood, Bayou Shores, and Chateau Lafitte Townhouses

I am not sure how close they are to UTMB. Comfort is more important than commute to me. I commute an hour one-way right now to undergrad. Let me know if you check any of these out. Have fun!

I am going to be living in one, and I have lived in one the past summer when I was working at UTMB. The best thing other than cost has to be location and the fact your living with about 20 or so other med students from varying backgrounds and years. Also some offer meals, which is nice. Its nothing like greek life in undergrad, which is fun for maybe a semester. 🙄 Finally, parties. Like everyone else I work hard and play harder, and I like to throw parties. It will be fun to be part of an organization in my free time that plays intermurals and throws parties after exams, thats my 2 cents.

I will try to check out the list and report back..........thanks for the info! I am also thinking about the med frat thing........being cheap and all. I also drive over an hour for work right now so anywhere on the island is going to be better than that. Have a great day everyone!

Lemme know how Casa Caribe is wdarili 🙂 I'm interested in that complex as well.

daysleeprx,

i currently live in Casa Caribe, and I intend on extending my lease for another year. Two other friends and I live in a three-bedroom apartment, and we've overall been satisfied with the living conditions of the apartment. The biggest selling point is that it's really cheap and close to class. The outside of the apartment complex looks like a jail compound (IMHO), and the facilities do appear dated compared to the newer complexes on the west end of the island. For three bedrooms, two baths, and 1900 square feet of space, I pay $280 as my share plus cable TV/modem and electricity. There's an even mix between people who are associated with UTMB and those who aren't. Several students live within the complex, and most plan on staying since it's again cheap and close to class. The parking is covered, gated, and free too. Plus, you're only a 5 minute walk from the beach, which is nice when going to play volleyball or running on the Seawall.

I was thinking of Casa Caribe, because they were within my budget and close to campus (for me, commute is more important than comfort at the moment... tho I don't want to live in an asylum, or anything).

You know anyone looking for a roommate? I'm quiet and respectful! 😀

Meee!! But I'm noisy and DISrespectful...😛

Did you already look into the frats and decide they weren't for you?

Haha, I like living with someone who's noisy and disrespectful... they tend to be less passive aggressive (the bane of my college roommate experiences!).

😛

I haven't checked the frats out yet, I am just leaving my options open. My initial plan is to hopefully get a room at PHI CHI for pre-matric, see how I like it, and then if I decide it isn't for me I'll have the summer to scramble around and find a place to house my carcass for the next year.

what you can do is get on the waitlist at various apartment complexes, move into Phi Chi during the summer to see if you like it, and then decide if the apartment complexes are the better option. don't forget that you get meals at the frats too, which is nice during test weeks and McDonald's not looking too appetizing. My med frat TKY offers out-of-house members a meal option of $50 for 9 meals a week, which is less than $2 for each pretty good meal. oh, and your class is lucky have Chick-Fil-A and Quiznos in the John Sealy cafeteria right from the start. We've been waiting for half a year of them closing down the cafeteria to renovate and add those franchises.

Wish I could go to pre-matric too...if just to meet future classmates and get used to the routine of things. But, alas, travels call me away--and it's my last free summer for a while so I guess I'd better enjoy it! 😀

Hey shock,

So the joke you pulled was wrong, yes...and kind of funny. I wanted to thank you for doing that. Why?

I haven't been looking forward to starting medical school next year....come on now, who is actually looking forward to spending the next 4 years in a constant reclusive, anal-retentive state, always worrying about upcoming tests and the insane amount of information that will be stuffed down your throat? Yes, the UTMB curriculum format will make it a little easier since we won't have hell weeks....but it's still going to be tough.

Anyway, when I saw your post, I believed you...and the first thing I thought was - "OMG, WHAT IF I GET A REJECTION LETTER?!!" And in those 5 minutes that I was living in sheer terror...I realized, I really do want to go to medical school.

So you might be laughing right now, thinking you're so clever for making such a funny joke...and it was...but...don't ever do anything like that again!! It was NOT COOL.

Btw, you might want to change your SDN screen name now...no one's going to take you seriously. Come back with a name like "Honesty2000" or "Truth4U"...and maybe we'll believe what you say. 🙂

bumpity bump...

Can't wait for spring break! Yay! Anybody going somewhere, doing something?
