Awww...come on, you're graduating and it's your last year. Live a little! I've got stuff to do too, but who can concentrate when it's spring break?

I'm only graduating if I get all this work done!

Wish I could go to pre-matric too...if just to meet future classmates and get used to the routine of things. But, alas, travels call me away--and it's my last free summer for a while so I guess I'd better enjoy it! 😀

Alas, travel beckons, eh? Now where is that tiny violin, +pity+ , ah, there it is. Try not to have *too* much fun while you're being FORCED to travel. 😉 Btw, kudos on trying to be such a bad influence on daysleeprx! 🙂

Barca: Thanks for the rec about the apartment waitlists! Do we just show up at the complex and put down a deposit, or can we get on those lists without any fees?

kaleidoscope83: Nice mature reply to shock (who hopefully took your advice about the name change).

Yeah, I've just been in denial about the abject terror I feel about actually *getting* into med school, but you're totally right...

Although chatting with other UTMBers on this forum makes me *less* worried about the kind of people I'm going to be in school with last year (which was one of the most important things I considered when deciding my ranking order on TMDSAS), it's a whole new world we're going into.

Oh well, if things don't work out, we can always form our own A-Team: http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/a-team-finding.htm I'm kinda leaning towards Hannibal, altho Murdock's cool too. Who wants to be Mr. T? I pity the fool who doesn't make the best of their time at UTMB!

I'm all about the Mr. T right here 😀 👍

I'm afraid of med school 🙁 . When I found out that I matched, I didn't even react. Everyone else was so much more excited about it than I was/am. AHHH! I still want to go, though 🙂. But it's difficult to meet new peeps.

Okay, so you've got the gold chains, right daysleeprx? Now all you need is the mo-hawk... just hold still, this won't hurt a bit! :hardy:

Don't worry...when you see me at 8 am class having just rolled out of bed, I'll look more like Mr. T than you think 😎

Well, it was fun meeting people at the Houston meet-up party after the Match - I was kinda expecting a bunch of stuffy/ competitive vibes from the new MDs-to-be, and yet everyone was very supportive in that way you get when you've all been through the same shell-shock together.

I'm holding onto hope that our future classmates are going to be similar. We're not going to get along with EVERYONE we meet (we may even want to strangle a few of them), but UTMB tends to populate its classes with an assortment of interesting characters, so you will probably find some people who aren't TOO, TOO scary (unless you like that sort of thing 😉 ).

Now we need a "Face"...and a van!

I found this quotation on UTMB's "Student Life" website: "For every difficulty that supposedly stops a person from succeeding there are thousands who have had it a lot worse and have succeeded anyway. So can you." --Brian Tracy

So there's your uplifting thought for times when it's hard to meet people. 🙂

http://www.utmb.edu/studentlife/ - This website has some info on campus activities (like Quest, and Student Government).

I'm a first year at UTMB (class of 2008).

congratulations to all of you! you will enjoy it here, i promise 👍 🙂

i saw some previous posts of questions regarding housing. i'll give my take.

~~~~~
UTMB dorms & apt. has pros and cons:
pros: very close to campus, ~5 minutes walking distance to your classes, very affordable(~$300/mos), high speed internet, all utilities included.
cons: dorms are kinda old. unless you get a private dorm room, you will have a roommate.
~~~~~
UTMB frat houses.

pros: someone was asking what was the catch. there is no catch, it's a great deal. (i would consider living in one, except i already live in the dorm) dirt cheap (may even be cheaper than the dorm) i know at least one frat that hires a cook and they get 10 meals per week, close to campus, comraderie (but no, don't count on old tests... all tests and some quizzes are sequestered.)

cons: only thing i could think of is potential loss of privacy, you may share rooms, and you could get loud obnoxious housemates. i think different frats have different personalities.
~~~~~
UTMB has student-run scribes services. you should definitely buy old scribes! it will help you immensely! (you will get more info in your admissions packet) i'd be happy to answer any questions regarding scribes.
i just noticed this thread. i'd be happy to answer any other questions you have regarding UTMB. you could PM me also.
Thanks foto. I was actually looking at that website last night. Weird huh? I like quotes like that, to keep things in perspective.
Thanks so much, medstudent123!
Out of curiosity, when you were in our shoes last year, when did you start hearing from UTMB again? They've got our acceptance letters, so when should we expect more info on summer programs, financial aid, orientation, etc? I'm getting so impatient that I'm actually trudging through the *student life* page, for crying out loud. 😉
Thanks!
I actually quoted a motivational speaker in my personal statement, without realizing it. On a board in one of my former prof's offices there was this inspirational quotation that went "It's not what you get when reach your goals, it's what you become." I liked it so I kinda co-opted it for my PS (yeah, cheesy, but it was tucked away at the end 😉)
...anyways, I googled the saying and found that it's attributed to some motivational speaker - I didn't want a cheesy citation in my PS, so I just said "there's a saying that goes..."
I guess from time to time those speakers have all right things to say...they usually just say them with more oofph and for money. :laugh:
They motivate me to not be a motivational speaker. 🙂
utmb's kinda lazy when it comes to packets. you should get another one with info on white coat sizes, different organizations and such. i think that one comes in the summer, but the one before that has some BS papers that need to be filled out like physical exams. stuff will come eventually, so you don't have to check the student life office all the time for information.
Have a great weekend and spring break everyone!
I'll be back next week, hopefully with a tan! 😀 Don't miss me too much now. 😛
Do you have your prefs set up to block ppl not on your list?
Fotolilith,
I'm not quite sure what month they started sending packets (i know it's summer), but I do remember there was a lag period between match day and when they start bombarding us with packets (trust me you'll get a bunch). in the meantime, i thought maybe they made a mistake in my acceptance, haha 🙂
So, like Barca said, don't worry about it for now. You don't need to be searching thru student life webpage (i've found it kinda hard to navigate without that much useful info anyways...)
also, for those of you who don't know, UTMB has the awesomiest curriculum. We take one class (called a 'module') at a time (two, if you count Practice of Medicine (POM), which is throughout your first two years, but that class only meet once per week, and i count that as half a class 🙂 )
so... unlike college, you don't need to be thinking about what courses to register, and such. everyone takes the same class, so you don't need to do anything. (i remember even during Quest orientation, I had no clue what was going on and was wondering when are they going to let us register) so dont worry! everything will be taken care of.
the only thing you should be worrying about now is start hunting for housing. townhouses, condos, apartments, or whatever fits your budget/preference. get your parents to do a little research for you and find good deals.
for those who are eager to have heads up in med school, your first course will be Gross Anatomy & Radiology (GAR)... plus POM. you'll have lectures every morning from either 8 or 9am until 10am, and anatomy lab from 10-noon. you get lunch off (there's a Sudent Center with a small cafeteria called Joe's. it a favorite hangout during lunch. there are also several hospital cafeteria as well. plus they are doing some innovations, and they might be adding a Chic-fil-A, or so I hear) then afternoon, from 1-2pm, MWF, you have PBL. one day a week, from 2-5PM, you have POM.
(for those of you not familiar with PBL, for each module, you are randomly divided into groups of 9 students, and you have a PhD or MD facilitator. you will be given clinical cases/scenarios, and you are to discuss the cases, exchange ideas/knowledge, identify 'learning issues', etc. the material discussed in PBL could show up on the midterm or final exams. you are also graded by the facilitator (usually 5-10% of your total grade) on your participation, acquistition/application of knowledge, and professionalism.) blah blah, you'll get all this info again during your orientation. i found PBL's to be great way to getting to know your fellow classmates as well, especially during the beginning of the year.
what else... oh... GAR is a fun course, the course directors really try to make your transition to med school enjoyable. they hold these weekly quiz shows, called Who's Anatomically Correct (WAC), and it's been a student favorite. you get to see your fellow classmates compete for corny little prizes, such as anatomy tshirts, vertebrae mugs, and such.
textbooks... the one book you absolutely need for GAR is Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy. But don't jump the gun and buy it yet... during orientation, there will be a 'club/organization fair', and one of the orgs, American Med Student Assoc (AMSA), will give you a free Netter's if you join (membership fee is like $60?, which is about the price of the book)
alright, that's all i can think of right now. i know i've been kinda disjointed in my post, just trying to think of all the things that might be of interest to you guys right now.
O sorry, I was logged off for a bit...I'm on now!
Hey I'm here! Was gone all weekend. :horns:
That's great that we need Netter's Atlas (2nd ed). I still have that one from my human anatomy class at UT. Figured I'd need it fo med skool, and was I right! TAMU med uses them in gross anatomy also. SCORE!
Current UTMB folks, is it ok to have an older version or do you recommend getting the new one?
the human anatomy hasn't changed much over the last 5 years 😉
in all seriousness, if you already have 2nd edition, that's good enough. the main difference between 2nd and the current 3rd edition is the organization of some sections. it wont interfere with your learning.
that's another point: you do not need to buy every single book that's 'required' or 'recommended'. talk to some upperclassmen and get their opinions first, before buying all the books. (there are some books that i've barely opened, and are now sitting on my shelves as paperweight...)
TAMU? We don't use that language around here.
Hey guys, congrats on your acceptance. I'm a 2nd year now at UTMB and am leaving for Austin in early to mid-June to do my third year rotations. That leaves me with a great place that I need to rent out. It's a two story condo at 921 Marine St. off of Harborside and 4th at the Marina Pointe condos. It's a short bike ride/walkable distance to campus. There are already plenty of med students, residents, and other UTMB students and employees here so if you know anyone, just ask them about it. I bet they've heard of the place or know of it. Here are the specifics:
- 2 bedrooms
- 2 1/2 baths
- washer/ dryer
- kitchen with refridgerator/oven/dishwasher/trash compactor
- fireplace
- minibar
- 1 covered parking spot
- gated
- walking distance to field house
- and a view of the water from the condo including both rooms
It's a really nice and convenient place to live as a student. I looking for maybe around $1200/month but it's definitely negotiable because I need to find someone soon. If interested, feel free to reply or PM me.
Also if you need any advice on living/books/class, feel free to contact me. As far as the frats go, some people like living there and some don't. It's a small place and if thats not your thing then live off campus. if you need a place that provides meals, you should probably go to the beta house because AKK seems to phasing out meals right now which is upsetting a lot of people. Just to let ya know. Good luck.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to let ya'll know about the cell phone service with different companies. The 2 best services with the most consistency on the island are T-mobile and Verizon. Cingular is a very close finisher but not as consistent as the other 2.
SPRINT is well....not that great. In fact it is horrible, espeically on the east side of the island (thats where the school is at). I just canceled my serivice with them (it took awhile to convince them to let me out of my contract). So if you're a Sprint costumer now and are coming to UTMB, i WOULD NOT renew my contract no matter how good the incentives are. It gets so frustrating when you have to walk outside of a building in order to call someone. Dropped calls are consistant and very annoying. Of all the people who have sprint i dont think anyone is happy with their service. 4 other people have gotten out of their contracts successfully and trust me it was a pain in the ass. I have verizon now and i finally get full service on the entire island. Hope ya'll are enjoying every minute of your free time!!
-Bono 🙄
Thanks for the great advice, nobrainer and Bono!!
well i watched the match process for fourth years before lunch today...looks very exciting, especially for my friends who received good news.
between match day and St Paddy's, I imagine the strand will be a little crowded for Thursday night Bigass Beers....
now i am REALLY looking forward to August.
