I really liked this program, anybody have any thoughts on it? They seem to have bounced back very well from Ike, and are taking a full load of residents (14 PGY-1s, and 4 CA-1's). The main drawback to me is the intern year being in Houston, as I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of Galveston, and would live in Galveston all 4 years if I did residency at UTMB.

Yeah, you say that now. Have you ever lived in Galveston? Living there and visiting there, two totally different things. I went to medschool there and they have an excellent anesthesia program. A little on the large side for me but I would gladly have stayed had it not been the crappy location. Enjoy the one year in Houston. Can't speak much about the internship as I graduated a couple of years back, but Houston is a fun town. Beats Ghettofabulous Galveston any day. Trust me on that.

On the up side, great approachable faculty, good daily didactics, great ICU experience as it's run mostly by anesthesiologists, good perks, and a good reputation. One of the strongest southern programs in my opinion.

I disgree about living in G-town! (as we call it!) I did med school and residency at UTMB, lived on the island for 8 years...and you know what, I LOVED IT! It took me a while, for it to grow on me, but once it did...I love it there. I graduated in June and actually moved to Kentucky in July, and let me tell you, I miss Galveston so much! (And I'm from Houston so it's not like I was USED to the small town atmoshpere growing up or anything) I miss the laid back atmosphere the OP mentioned, I love no traffic, I love the beach and the seawall, and the community atmosphere, the getting to know the locals, being regulars at many places, etc. And I can speak very highly of the anesthesia program as well! PM me if you have any specific q's. I can tell you that YES, that place (UTMB, Galveston and the anesthesia program itself) has come a LONG WAY, very quickly since Ike. It was my senior year and for a few months, we thought UTMB was not gonna exist...well, but Feb/March, things were pretty much back to normal except for the ER being closed, and since it opened up again in Aug (after I left) I've heard things are busy and running as usual.

Good luck and PLEASE enjoy galveston! Enjoy it for me because I miss it a lot!
